Chapter 1: Don't Listen To This Slinthead

"Rise and Shine sleeping beauty!" A voice calls, I stir in my bed before looking over to the door of my room. Minho stood in the door with his arms crossed, dressed, and ready for his day. I let out a soft breath and smiled, "I'll meet you out there okay? And don't talk so loud we're only the few in the homestead who have to be up this early." I mutter as I pull my blankets off. I stretch my muscles and hear Minho chuckle, "Whatever you say mama." He muses before closing the door. I roll my eyes at the ridiculous nickname, one of the many and in my top three most annoying. As the only girl trapped in these walls I'm subdued to the constant torment of teasing of boys being outnumbered fifty to one.

Disregarding Minho's rather too-early-in-the-morning teasing I pull out shorts and sleeveless shirt before tying on my boots and strapping on my machete. Pulling my hair out of my face as I left my room I quickly and quietly met Minho by the door. Minho opens the door for me and we both leave the homestead, just before he runs off to wake his Runners he presses a kiss to my temple. A small gesture that lessens the fear of him not returning when he goes through those doors. As Minho wakes his Runners I walk the wall near the door, rows upon rows of tally lines the walls. With the start of this particular new day I start a new month. Drawing my machete I etch a new line in a section of the wall and circle it signaling the arrival of a new greenie. With the day marked I made my way to the kitchen where Frypan and one other cook is up and starting prep, I slip on my apron and start cooking meals for the Runners, I start their breakfast so that way I can prepare their lunch to take into the Maze as they eat. Frypan and Julius both joined my preparation soon after they finished the tasks they started. It wasn't long after they joined did Minho lead his pack of Runners into the Kitchen. I sent each runner a smile as they thanked me when I served them their food. Manners has always been something I valued since I started working in the kitchen.

With Each runner eating quietly Frypan, Julius, and I quickly made them their take away lunch. With the three of us on the task we made quick work of the preparations. There are only eight runners, one for each section, Minho had explained once. When boys rinsed their plates they gathered in a line to grab their lunch. With each lunch I gave each, one boy will lean down to let me kiss their head. Another method to once again somewhat soothe my worry of the Maze. "We'll see you this afternoon Ma, hopefully before the greenie arrives." Ben smirks, I swat at his arm at the sound of his nickname. Minho scoffs with his own smirk before shoving Ben forward to get a move on. "You can't be mad at the name forever (y/n), you practically gave it yourself." Frypan snorts, "Keep your nose in your pot, Frypan," I huff cleaning up before I start preparations for the rest of the Glades breakfast.

Making breakfast is cake compared to serving it, all the hungry boys who had just woken up are shoving and shouldering each other in line for food. I'm not going to lie, it took more than one bang of my spool to get them to stop. When breakfast is well and done, Frypan and I get our own servings before we store leftovers and clean up. When clean up is over I go to help Clint and Jeff, mornings are quiet for us, it isn't until the middle of the day do Gladers come in with something wrong. Usually slicers who need a bandage or two, occasionally someone in need of a stitch will come in. There are at least two builders who've bent something out of shape or something that was dropped on their head. Every blue moon a Track-Hoe will come in with a slight scrap from their equipment.

I leave an hour or so before the sun settles in the middle of the sky to meet Frypan to ready lunch. Lunch is usually something quick and easy, something that's usually made from the Glade so we can stretch the supplies from the box. Today's lunch, sandwiches. Every starts off with one but they're free to come back for seconds, however I doubt that will be the case today. Everyone knows there will be a bonfire tonight and will be saving their appetite for tonight. Because of the Bonfire tonight, Frypan and I will have to start preparing food straight after lunch. That is until the Greenie arrives, Greenies arrive at all points of the day. Minho arrived early in the morning, Alby arrived later in the morning, Newt arrived at noon, and Frypan arrived in the afternoon. No one has arrived past sunset, a fact I am entirely grateful for.

Just as lunch started the familiar sounds of the Box rings out, I felt my heart leap in my chest as I flung off my apron and made a dash to the box. I hear the boys hoot and holler as they too run the box, we wait for the box to stop moving before opening it. I smile down at the boy who jumps at the sudden light, The boys murmur to each other as the boy below starts to squirm. "Go get'em Gally!" one of them called, I let out a sigh as Gally jumped into the pit. "Sweetheart are you okay down there?" I call, at the sound of my voice the boys snicker. "Come on mama let us have our fun!" Julius calls, "Come on Mummy dearest where's your sense of excitement?" Newt chuckles. "Your a girl!" The boy in the box gasps, "Great you have eyes greenie, now keep them somewhere else." Gally grunts before lifting him out. Newt gently draws me away as the other boys pull him out. As soon as his body hits dirt the boys surround him, I pull some of them back by their shirts to give him air but their constant chatter makes the poor boy panic. My eyes widen when he's up and running across the Glade. "This is EXACTLY why I don't let you slintheads have your way with the Greenies!" I huff, "Woo, we got a runner!" calls one of the boys. I scoff and make my way through the crowd, the boys clearing me path as I walk. I make my way to follow the greenie as he runs but I start to jog when I notice he trips and tumbles. The boys behind us break out into a fit of laughter before applauding, "Will you klunckheads slim it!" I snap over to them. The boy from the box slowly stood to his feet and turned in a circle, I can vaguely recall myself doing the same thing so many years ago.

"Sweetheart?" I call softly, the boy jumps at the sound of my voice. "Where am I? Who are you!" He snapped stalking forward, my eyes widened as he grabbed my shoulders and shook them slightly. "Hey! Easy we don't want the others to-" I don't get to finish as some of Gladers quickly take him by the arms and literally toss him a few feet away. "Be careful, he's just confused!" I call, "Doesn't matter, he shouldn't have grabbed you like that!" Gally snaps. The boy kicks and yells as they drag him to pits, I take a deep breath and go off to find Alby to help me deal with the situation. After finding Alby at the homestead we make a stop at the kitchens so I can grab the boy a sandwich as a peace offering.

Arriving at the Pits I ease my way over to his cell, The boy jumps away from the door as I appear. "Hello sweetheart." I smile, The boy shook like he was soaked and stuck out in the cold. "Hey it's okay, are you hungry?" I question softly, holding a sandwich out for him. Slowly he inched his way over to me before taking the sandwich surprisingly gently from my hands. I sat on the dirt in front of him as he gingerly ate, "There's someone you need to meet, he won't hurt you. Promise." I smile before waving over Alby. The boy watches carefully as Alby makes his way into view. "Hey there greenbean," He greets, "Your not gonna run again okay?" He commands softly. The boy looked over at me and I sent him a small nod. The boy nods over to Alby in return, "Good." Alby smirks.

The boy jumped as Alby quickly stood up, I smiled as he held his down for me to help me up. I took it and he lifts me effortlessly onto my feet, Alby then unlocks the door to the cell. With the door open I lean down and send the boy a small smile, "Hey sweetheart, my name is (y/n) and this is Alby, are you able to tell us anything about yourself? Like your name or where you came from?" I question softly. I felt my heartbreak as I watched him painstakingly rack his brain for any kind of answer. "I can't remember anything, why can't I remember anything?" He whimpered, "Hey, Hey, it's okay if you can't answer. We all went through the same thing sweetheart. You have a name, it's the one thing they let you keep here. You'll get it back, it just takes a little time okay?" I soothe gently easing myself into the cell and over to him. Alby watches the boy carefully as I get close and closer, eventually I'm able to place my hand on his shoulder. I grip his shoulder tightly as he starts to hyperventilate, "Hey, Relax, Relax." Alby calls. The boy took my hands in his and held them tightly like a lifeline, "What is this place?" He questions quietly. "We can show you." I offer, the boy nods and without so much of a fight I lead him out of his cell.

As soon as he's on his own two feet I gently remove my hands from his, "Come on sweetheart, no one's gonna hurt you. Not while I'm around at least." I giggle slightly. Slowly Alby and I lead him through the Glade, "We eat here, we sleep here, we grow our own food, and build our own shelter. Whatever else we need the box will give us." I explain, "The rest is up to us." Alby adds. "The box?" The boy questions, "They send one up once a month with fresh supplies and new greenie," Alby answers, "This month that's you sweetheart." I smile, "Congratulations," Alby chuckles giving him a slight tap. "Sent up by who? Who put us here?" He questions, I raise a brow at the questions, usually that's one of the very last questions the Greenies ask. "That we don't know," Alby answers.

It's quiet between the three of us for a moment, that is before I see Newt making his way over. "There you two are," he chuckles, "Newt," I greet sternly, still not particularly pleased with his earlier behavior. "Uh oh," Alby chuckles, "Greenbean, meet Newt. When I'm not around he's in charge," Alby introduces as the boys shake hands. "It's a good thing you're always around then, even if we're in charge its (y/n) who really pulls the strings around here." Newt jokes, I scoff and slap the boy lightly. "Don't listen to this slinthead sweetheart, but know if you ever need anything I'm always around to help. I can't promise to fix all your problems, but I can promise you won't go through them alone." I smile, "listen, that was some dash you made earlier, you know for a second I thought you had the chops to be a runner." Newt spoke, "till you face planted." He added quickly. "I'm sure he still could be, let Minho train him a bit. I'm sure he'll be just as good as any of them." I quip. "A Runner?" The boy questions, "Newt do me a favor and go find Chuck." Alby asks. Newt simply nods and limps off.

"(y/n)," Alby calls next, I hum letting him know I'm listening as I watch the preparations of the bonfire. "Go one and make sure everything is running as it should." He orders, I nod my head and turn to leave before a hand catches mine. I look over at the boy who looks at me pleadingly, "Don't worry sweetheart you'll see me around, Alby will make sure you know what you need and soon enough you'll meet Chuck who'll show you the rest. Like I said if you need anything I'm always around, you can find me at the kitchen or at the homestead in the medbay." I instruct. "Don't get clingy greenbean, you have share her with the rest of the Glade two clingy Glader is more than enough." Alby jokes, "Gally isn't clingy Alby, just protective and Minho is too busy to be clingy." I scoff before walking away.

I make my rounds with the preparations, just as I finish up I see Minho and Ben jogging over, the last two to leave the Maze by my count. Ben reaches me first and places a rushed kiss on the top of my head before running off to the showers, Minho slowly stops and kisses my temple. "I see the Greenie arrived," He muses, "Mmhm, and our lovely Gladers pulled him out and made him shoot off across the Glade like a spooked animal. Tripped halfway across." I inform. Minho lets out a small laugh, I sent him a glare and knocked his chest with the back of my hand. "And what's the little name you've given this one huh?" He questions with a smirk, while all the other boys preferred to call the new arrivals greenie or greenbean, I strayed from that and called them something much more endearing until they know their name. Something that soothed them, rather than constantly reminding them of the fact they have no idea who they are. "What's it matter to you?" I quip, "Doesn't matter to me, I'm just curious is all." He smirks. "Well if you must know I've been calling him sweetheart." I muse, before Minho can answer I hear commotion near the gates. "Shuck," I huff before jogging my way over, my eyes widen when I see the boy scrambling away from Gally before yelling at all the boys around him. "Hey! Hey! Sweetheart easy," I call softly, "Why won't you let me leave!" He huffs as he's wise enough to use a tone much more kinder than one he's been using.

I open my mouth to answer when I hear the familiar sound of turning gears, my heart sinks into my chest. It must have shown as Gally gently pushes me away from the doors, I jump when I hear that terrifying growl echo through the Maze walls and by that point Alby is shoving me behind him. I take deep breaths to calm myself but I hear the bittersweet sound of the closing doors. I relax when the doors finally close, "Next time, I'm gonna let you leave," Gally calls to the boy before walking away. As he leaves Gally places a soft kiss to the top of my head before continuing on his way. By then all the Gladers who had gathered slowly went back to where they were, Newt is the one to gently take my hand and lead me away from the stone walls. "Newt?" I question, He hums as he continues to guide me deeper into the Glade. "Talk to him for me, Maybe you can do a better job than me or Alby." I mumble, "And what makes you say that Mummy dearest?" He chuckles. I let go of a long sigh at his version of my nickname, "Because Alby can't seem to get through to him and I've been more a less his moral support rather than his guide." I huff. Newt nods slowly before shooting me a small smirk, "Don't kid yourself love you've always been more of our moral support than guide." He chuckles before leaving me to my thoughts.
