21. Blame Game

I didn't have to ask why Isaac was suddenly on my side because I knew; he was shown his true self by the nogitsune just like how he had shown me. I could feel it. It was like something about us was connected in a way that I wouldn't ever really understand, but all that mattered was that we were on the same page:

Kill Lydia Martin.

That was our only goal for the moment, and everything so far was going our way. Nothing would stand in my way now...I had to do this, for Stiles. I just couldn't understand why the others weren't on board with the same plan. Stiles was their friend too. Shouldn't they be willing to sacrifice a life for his? The nogitsune will show them the truth soon enough...he had to.

"Do you know what room number she's in?" Isaac asks me as we step into the hospital, hearing the occasional hospital talk and smelling that stale cleanliness.

My eyes catch Melissa. "No, but I'm about to find out."

I walk ahead of Isaac as I lean up against the counter Melissa was standing behind, tapping away on the computer before looking up at me. Her eyebrow raises slightly, shocked to see us here. "What are you two doing here? I thought you were supposed to be at school-"

"We wanted to see Lydia," I say simply, technically not lying. For a moment, I wondered if Scott had told his mom about me putting her here in the first place, but it appeared to me that she didn't have that info...yet. "What room number is she in?"

Her eyes flick between the two of us for a moment. "I mean, not to be rude at all, but where's everyone else? I didn't know you and Isaac were that close of uh, friends."

Isaac and I look at one another, not really sure what to say to that. He speaks before I can. "They're on their way. We got here first surprisingly."

She nods her head stiffly, sensing that something was off, but not sure. "Ah, okay. Lydia is in room...215, second floor."

"Thanks," I force a smile on my face turning and heading towards the elevator as Isaac follows behind me. I feel Melissa's eyes on my back as we walk away, but I didn't care much about it. Isaac and I were so close now...and not even someone like Melissa could stop us. I mean, come on. I doubt a human like her could take on a werewolf and a seer by herself.

A couple steps out of the elevator before Isaac and I step inside, reaching out and pressing the second floor button. We stand in silence as the doors slowly shut, Melissa making weird eye contact with me one last time. Something in me told me that she knew something was wrong, to be worried about it, but something else told me to keep moving forward with the plan, so I did.

"So, why do you want her dead?" I say, trying to make some type of conversation.

Isaac raises an eyebrow. "Why do you?"

"He told me he'd give Stiles back if I killed her," I breathe, looking up at the number changing for the floors. "Eliminate her from the picture."

Isaac nods before shrugging. "I don't really have a specific reason; I just thought she was always annoying."

I snicker. "How?"

"I asked her out on a date once," he fades out as the doors start to open. "Not only did she tell me no, but she also gave me her number."

I turn and look at him. "What's wrong with getting her number?"

He turns and faces me, giving me a bitchy face. "She needed a dog sitter, and she thought I was qualified for the job because I 'was never busy on the weekends anyways'."

"Damn," I breathe before stepping out of the elevator, walking down the long hallway. As I pass a couple of doors, I glance at their numbers and find that they were only 203 and 205. It doesn't take us long to reach room 215, finding her door wide open as she lay there in the hospital bed, fast asleep.

I step inside first as Isaac follows, closing the door behind him. As he does this, I stare at Lydia's slow rising chest, noticing the slight gap in her red lipstick stained lips. Watching her in that bed only made me wish she was dead more, and that was when I knew that this was going to be a lot easier than I had originally thought.

"Get it over with," Isaac says to me, standing by the door as he looks out of the small window. "Put a pillow over her face or something."

"No," I say, shaking my head. "I want her to see it's me before she dies."

Isaac groans. "Well, whatever you're going to do, make it quick before someone figures out what we're really doing here."

It was in that moment I looked up and saw a pen lying there. I mean, it wasn't anything compared to a knife, but it would work, nevertheless. I quickly grab it before looking back down at Lydia, not even taking a full minute to figure out what I was going to do with it.

Stab her in the throat...I'd like to hear her scream then.

I clutch the pen in my right hand as I reach down to cover Lydia's mouth with my free hand, just in case she did decide to scream before...you know. However, when I reach down and press my hand against her mouth, I was plunged into a vision...one from the past.

I was standing in that run down mall from last year...the one where I had almost died because of Kali. The place where we thought Derek had died as well. I hated this place.

I hear my own voice then as I look down and see myself lying on the ground, claws marks deep in my chest. Allison was at my side, being held back by Ennis, but Lydia was right over me, her hands on my wounds as she focused.

"You can do this," Allison says, half crying and half screaming from nerves. "Save him, Lydia, please."

I take a few steps forward as I watch closely as Lydia makes the skin pull together on my chest, healing me. My eyes are wide from relief as Allison breaks free and falls to my side, pulling me in close, thanking Lydia under her breath that she had saved my life.

After witnessing this for the second time, more memories are flashing across my mind. Ones that all involved...her. The time she saved me again in the bathroom, the time I had saved her back in the school when Jennifer had taken her, the time I saved her at Stiles' house that night when I was dead...all of them were memories of why I cared about Lydia Martin.

In that last moment, I rip my hand away from her mouth and gasp, shaking my head as I stare down at her. Isaac stares at me with confusion as I back away, looking back at him. He speaks first. "What's wrong with you? End it already!"

"I can't-" I cut myself off before Stiles pops back into my head. The memories of the family dinners, the movie nights in the living room, and the nights we stayed up talking about girls. For a moment, I thought about killing her again, but then I stopped to think about what Stiles would have wanted. Those late nights we stayed up talking about girls...he always talked about Lydia and no one else. He cared for her just as much as I cared for him...I couldn't take her life for his. He'd never forgive me.

Isaac was filled with rage. "Fine, I'll do it."

In that moment, Isaac rushes forwards and snatches the pen out of my hands, but it wouldn't do him much good. Everything next happened so fast. The next thing I know, I see Allison throwing the door open and throwing a Chinese ring dagger at Isaac's hand, hitting him directly in the middle of his hand.

He roars from the dagger, dropping the pen as it clinks on the tile flooring. I notice Lydia starting to wake up then, but I was looking at Allison at that point. She grabs another dagger and holds it out before I see Scott and Jade running into the room, eyes burning red as they watched Isaac closely.

"Try and lay a finger on her," Scott snarls. "I dare you."

I narrow my eyes at him, but I slowly raise my hands into the air, giving up. However, Isaac had other plans. The next thing I know, I see his claws extending as he turns around and holds them up against Lydia's throat, causing her to gasp.

"Isaac this isn't you!" Jade screams, shaking her head. I couldn't believe it, but it almost looked as if tears were forming in her eyes. "Listen to me, Isaac, okay? If you ever...if you ever cared about me, give this up."

Isaac looks over his shoulder at her, his eyes showing something that looked like regret and hurt. I could tell that something was telling him to kill Lydia, but that other something was telling him to listen to Jade. I was still battling that battle myself...a part of me still wanted to end all of this and get Stiles back.

And that was the moment everything flipped off like a switch. Everything that I had just believed was right suddenly was wrong again, and it almost made me collapse to the floor from the sudden jerk of it. I could tell that Isaac was affected the same way, because the moment it happened, he pulled his hand back and looked down at it, looking up at Jade with utter confusion.

"What just happened?" he asks, looking around at everyone. "I thought...how did I get here?"

Jade stares at Isaac for a moment before crashing into him, wrapping her arms around him. I watch them before I look over and see Allison staring at me, hurt yet hope in her eyes. I swallow the lump in my throat before looking back at Lydia, seeing her sitting there with tears brimming her eyes. She looked terrified of us...of me.

"Corey?" Allison says carefully, taking a step towards me. "Are you...are you, you?"

I look back at Allison then, tears in my eyes as everything crashes back into me. Stiles was still gone, I was going to lose Allison, and I almost killed Lydia, one of my best friends. Nothing was okay anymore.

"No," I say simply, shaking my head as my bottom lip trembles. "None of this...nothing about this was me. I'm not even sure who I even am anymore."

Allison lowers her dagger as she takes a step towards me. "Corey-"

I cut her off as I hold my hands out, not wanting her to get close to me. "No, I can't-"

I wasn't sure how to say what I wanted to say. I wanted to hold Allison so bad, because I needed it, but I didn't deserve it. I didn't deserve to always have her back me up in any situation and help me get over the wrong I've done. I deserved to feel this pain...to know that I almost killed my friend, and not because it was the nogitsune, but because it was me. All of this was on my hands, not his. I didn't deserve to hear Allison tell me that it wasn't.

I turn and look back down at Lydia, finding the mascara on her eyes smearing across her cheeks. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean-"

I cut myself off as I take a step away from her, feeling as if I wasn't even firmly in my own skin. I felt like I had just done everything so opposite of what I believed so strongly in, and I didn't know how to take all of it. It felt so wrong and it felt so...reckless.

I didn't know what to say. Instead, I quickly turn and try to flee the room, but Allison of course grabs my arm before she lets me slip on by. "Corey, none of this is your fault-"

"It is, and I don't need anyone telling me that it wasn't," I say sternly, not trying to snap at her in any way. I take a deep breath as she removes her hand from my arm, letting me say one last thing. "I can't help Stiles if I can't even protect all of you from myself. I-I can't help any of you. Please just...save Stiles without me. You'll be better off, trust me. I'm...I'm sorry."

And with that, I left in silence.
