08. long distance
"Allison, I still don't like this," I say into the phone as I lean against the wall in the school bathroom, ditching Math class. I'd much rather listen to her talk than that teacher who shouldn't even have a degree to teach.
She sighs through the phone, making me smile slightly. "You heard what Scott said; they were looking at you."
"But then they looked at Kira," I say, defending myself for the thousandth time today. "They didn't want to come for me; they would have if they had wanted to."
"I'm not the one calling the shots," Allison says, her voice stern. "Scott thought that you should stay behind and go with him to the house just in case. It's surrounded with mountain ash, so you'll be safe."
"What about you?" I counter ask, that question been replaying in my head all day. "You're going to visit a crazy man."
Allison's father had told us a story earlier on what those things were, which had a name called the Oni. He said a man might know more about them, his nick name being Silverfinger. The whole idea seemed dangerous to me, and I wanted to go and help, but that was when Scott insisted that I stayed, which then led to Allison agreeing with him of course. I guess at least Isaac went with them; someone that could protect them better than I ever could.
"I can protect myself," she says, making me smile at her dumb little quote. There wasn't a week that went by when she didn't at least say it once. I couldn't decide if that was funny or sad. "We need to figure out what these things are and what they want, and I have a feeling that it's nothing good."
I cross my arms, staring at the back of the bathroom door. "I know, I just wish I was there."
"Me too," Allison says surprisingly. "You'd look good in this tux."
I laugh at her, not sure why they had a tux, but I wasn't going to ask. "And I'd get out of going back to math class."
Allison is silent for a minute, but I didn't mind. Just listening to her breathe through the phone was okay with me. "I'm scared, Corey."
That startled me to hear her say that. "Me too."
"No, not because of all of this," she says, her father talking to Isaac in the background. "I'm scared of what comes after all of this; I'm scared that someone may not make it out this time."
I wondered the same thing. When did our luck finally run out? "Well if that someone happens to be me, I don't want a funeral. I don't want any crying; none of that. Corey Walker has been dead for awhile now anyways."
Allison laughs slightly. "I've always wondered what it would be like after I was gone. I always imagined someone writing letters to me, kind of like one of those chick flic movies, but I don't know."
"That sounds unhealthy," I comment, imagining myself sitting down at a desk writing letters to a dead loved one. "And depressing."
"Probably," she says, changing the topic. "I gotta go, we just got here. Stay safe, okay?"
I smile. "I'm always safe."
"Sure you are," she smiles. "I love you."
"Love you always," I say before hanging the phone up, shoving it back into my pocket. I stand there for awhile as I think about everything, staring at the back of the bathroom door. As time continued to pass by, it felt like every corner we looked, there was trouble waiting. When did we ever get a break?
Just when the bell rang, ending school, I started to walk to the door to walk out, but soon it flings open and causes me to stop in my tracks. I furrow my eyebrows when I see the twins walk inside, odd looks on their faces. We weren't the best of friends, but there wasn't any reason for them to be coming at me the way they were.
"What?" I ask, looking back and forth between the two of them.
Aiden speaks first. "Where's Scott and that girl?"
I raise an eyebrow. "Kira?"
"Yes, her," Ethan snaps at me, clearly ticked off. I wondered what happened there.
"How am I supposed to know? I'm not in charge of them," I say as I start to walk around them, but then Aiden reaches out and grabs my arm. "What-"
"Jade told us to keep an eye on you and the others," he says, making me grow angrier by the second. What was that supposed to mean?
"We can take care of ourselves," I snap. "And before you threaten me or whatever like what usually happens in movies, Scott's house is the safest place I can be. It's surrounded by mountain ash, and that's where I was headed, okay? If Jade's so worried about me, she can talk to me herself."
I rip my arm away as they let me walk around them, but I wasn't done yet. I turn back around then, narrowing my eyes. "And what are you two now? Jade's bitches?"
"She's our alpha," Ethan explains to me. "We were omegas, and omegas don't make it out there. Scott wouldn't take us in, so she was what we had left."
"So we aren't her bitches," Aiden snaps at me, clearly angry at my comment.
I was done with this conversation. "Sure, keep telling yourselves that."
I walk out of the bathroom then, angrier than hell. Jade and I weren't the friends that we used to be, but I thought she'd have more common sense about sending the twins to protect me. Where was she at anyways? If she wanted to protect me so bad, you'd think she'd do it herself.
But like I said, we aren't the friends we used to be.

"Ouch," I hiss as I stub my toe on Scott's doorstep, not even able to open the door before I managed to do that. It throbs in my shoe before I fling the door open, finding someone standing there I wasn't expecting.
"I'm trying to be tough dad here," McCall says as Scott groans at him.
"You're just a gene donor. You gave me my hair color, that's it," Scott fires back, not even acknowledging the fact that I had just walked in. I walked in at the wrong time.
McCall was getting snappy then, and I wasn't even sure what they were fighting about. "You aren't allowed to talk to me like that-"
"Come back with a warrant and then we can talk about this," Scott fires, finally looking around him at me. I casually shut the door as McCall finally looks, glaring at me since he was already mad.
"Why in the hell are you here?" he says as I stand there awkwardly. "You're Stilinski's boy, aren't you? Something else I can bust him on."
"Excuse me?" I widen my eyes. "Bust him on?"
He half laughs at my cluelessness. "He's knee high in things I can bust him on, and soon he'll be out of a job, kid. I'm cracking down on it."
Put him out of a job? Why didn't Stiles or Scott tell me about this? Maybe they didn't know, but Scott's face told me he did. "What does my existence have to do with anything?"
"What he did for you last year was illegal," he tells me, knowing where he was going with this. "You can't just take a kid home and let him live with you for months on end. It's called kidnapping."
He was right, but I wasn't done yet. "At least he didn't leave his kid in the middle of the night."
McCall was speechless then, and I could tell that Scott was done with him as well. "Dad, get out, okay? I'm not asking, I'm telling you."
The door opens from behind me, and that was when I realized that it was practically dark now. I see that it's Melissa as she stares at the scene in front of her. "What's going on here?"
"Are you-" McCall says, but that was when I looked up and saw that he wasn't talking to Melissa. He was staring at a figure in the living room, one that I was pretty sure was an Oni. "Who are you?"
The thing just standing there alone as it stares, not moving in any way, shape, or form. My fingernails dig into the palm of my hand from nerves as McCall finally approaches the figure, Scott yelling at him to stop. He doesn't listen though, and just when he got close enough, the thing takes it's sword and plants it deep into McCall's shoulder.
Kira lets out a loud scream as the window to my left busts open, two figures flying through it. Blue eyes glow in the dark, indicating that it was Ethan and Aiden as they run forwards, fighting off the one Oni standing in the living room. Scott joins as I run forwards and follow Melissa, the two of us grabbing McCall and dragging him to the side of the room where the fighting wasn't going on. He was alive, but there was blood everywhere.
Suddenly then again, there's another pair of red and blue eyes fighting the Oni, getting the other two that spawned inside the house out as they screamed for Melissa to drop the mountain ash barrier. She scrambles to grab the jar as I stare through the darkness, figuring out that it was Jade and Derek that decided to join the party. It amazed me that they even cared enough to show up.
I watch Scott and Jade throw one of the shadow figures out as they scream at her to drop the jar, which she does. The barrier completes as the Oni bang up against the walls of it, blue light forming and throwing them backwards with every hit. I sighed a breath of relief before I feel McCall move under my hand, reminding me that he was still bleeding to death.
"Melissa!" I shout, looking back down at him, seeing that his eyes were closing. "Wh-What do we need to do!"
She comes running back then, her hands shaking from nerves. "We need to get him upstairs and stop the bleeding."
I went to lift him before Scott comes over, picking him up carefully as he carried him towards the stairs. Melissa follows as I stand back up, shaking as well from everything that just happened. What in the hell did just happen? It happened too fast.
"Are you okay?" I hear a voice say, causing me to look up and see that it was Jade. She stares at me, waiting for an answer, but I couldn't find one fast enough.
I nod. "Y-Yeah."
"You have blood all over your hands," she says, grabbing my left hand and holding it up for me to see. I take one glance at it before quickly rubbing it off onto my jeans, not wanting to look at it. Blood made me sick to my stomach, especially when it was from someone I knew.
"We're safe inside here right?" Kira asks, staring at the door as two Oni continued to beat at the barrier with their swords. I thought they would have given up by now.
"Yeah," I breathe as the twins walk over to Kira, staring at her. She reaches up to touch the barrier as it flashes and throws her hand back, indicating that she was something supernatural.
Aiden furrows his eyebrows before looking back at me. "Wait...Corey, come here."
I didn't trust him, but the curiosity in his eyes made me wonder what he wanted, so I walked over and stood beside Kira. He motions for me to try and touch the barrier, so I did. But when I lifted my hand to be repelled back with a flashing blue light, it just went right on through as if it wasn't there. The Oni notice this as they run over to where we were all standing, trying harder to get through now.
"Isn't he something supernatural?" Derek says, stepping up behind me and the others.
My mind runs back to every time I was in contact with an ash barrier. "Back when I was dead, I couldn't get past the barrier at the night club, but now that I think about it, I was able to get out of the one at the bank vault."
"Dead?" Kira says, eyes wide. "You've died before?"
"Twice actually," I say, causing her to be more confused. I look back at Derek. "I'm supernatural; why doesn't it work on me?"
Derek stares at me for a moment, something clicking in his eyes. "Hold up, you're a seer right?"
"I guess so," I say as he points at me.
"Seers and banshees..." he fades out, thinking. "I've only read about it, but when seers and banshees are together, they are able to adjust what frequency they're on. Meaning, right now, you're on a different frequency that the rest of us, explaining why you can pass through."
Aiden furrows his eyebrows. "But Lydia isn't here right now."
"Sometimes they can do it over long distances, or I think they can draw the power from an object that belongs to the other," Derek breathes, staring at me as if he couldn't believe it. I was just trying to process it all. "You don't realize how powerful you two can be together, do you?"
One of the Oni beat on the barrier again then, causing the whole house to shake. Everyone looks around before looking back at the door, thinking the same thing. "Are you sure they can't get in here?"
Derek bites his tongue. "No promises."

IT'S BEEN SO LONG GUYS, IM SORRY
I had to update before I left for vacation, so here it is. It's a really sucky chapter, and for that I am really sorry. It's also unedited because I need to get to bed and wanted to post this, so I'm also sorry for that. I swear, I'm always sorry nowadays.
So that explains why Corey can pass through the barrier. Make sense now? Might want to take note; it'll be important later in the story (:
