Six: Are you okay?

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock ringing in my ears. I specifically asked for a loud alarm clock last Christmas, so it would wake me up instantly because over the years I had developed a bad habit of sleeping in on school days. But, not this time, I slammed my hand on the snooze button, and I got dressed for school. I kept telling myself that this day would be better.

As I reached into the closet to grab my uniform, I started to feel a small ache in my left hand. I must've hit it too hard on the alarm clock. I tried to open and close my hand so I could tell how bad the pain was, and as I closed my hand, it started to hurt more. I tried my other hand and tested for pain, it was the same amount of pain.

When I went downstairs for breakfast, I told my mother about the pain that I was having, and she let me take two Advil. "Do you know where these pains came from?" She asked as she set my breakfast plate in front of me. "I don't know, I must've accidentally twisted them the wrong way in my sleep," I answered.

"Well, just be careful today at school, I don't want to be in any more pain than you already are," Mother sighed. Breakfast was unusually quiet, except for the occasional coos from Beatrice. Father was busy reading the morning news, while my mother just sat there slumped over her plate. "Mother, what's wrong?" I asked. "It's nothing, I just haven't been getting a lot of sleep lately," she answered rubbing her tired eyes.

"You should try to get some sleep whenever Beatrice takes her naps," I said. She started to smile again, and she thanked me for the suggestion. "You two should probably get ready to go, I don't want you to be late," Mother said looking over at me and my father. Father quickly finished the last of his breakfast biscuit, and I scarfed down the last few pieces of my breakfast.

I gave my mother and sister a kiss on the cheek, and I got in the car. "Are you sure you're feeling okay? You look like your in a lot of pain," Father asked. "Yeah, my joints just ache, why do you ask?" I responded. "Look Dusk, I've seen symptoms like this before, your grandfather had similar symptoms, it may be nothing to worry about right now, but if it gets worse, tell me and I'll take you to a doctor," he sighed.

I never really knew my grandfather, the only time I remember seeing him was when I was three, a few weeks before he died. He had white-gray hair, he had lots of wrinkles, and I remember him constantly groaning in pain. "I'm not like my grandfather, I'm sixteen years old, it could just be growing pains, we don't know," I objected.

Father let out a small sigh, and looked out the side window for a second, "You're right, probably nothing to worry about, but just please tell me if it gets worse, I don't need anything bad to happen to you, you're my daughter, and I love you," he said. I liked how my father and I had a good relationship, he was always there for me whenever I needed him, and whenever he was stressed, I would always be there to hug him.

"I love you too, Dad," I said as I looked out the window, silently praying that the pain would subside.

A/n: So, some of you may be wondering why I had Dusk be in this much pain this chapter. Well, I can't tell you why, it's a spoiler. It will make sense later on, so you'll have to read on to find out! :)
