Nineteen: The Aftermath
Previously on Denouement High...
"Dusk, it's not too late to change your mind. You can stay in homeschool if you want,"
"It's okay, Mom. I want to make some friends and go to a few parties,"
"Leave her alone, Carmelita! You're the cakesniffer!"
"L-look, I know what happened at the Halloween party between us was a little awkward, but after a while of thinking, I realized that I have feelings for you,"
And now...
Quigley's P.O.V.
"Get her inside the hospital quickly!" One of the paramedics said as they got Dusk out of the ambulance and rushed her inside the emergency room. I rushed in close behind her. I had no idea what had happened to Dusk that caused her to collapse. I just hoped that they could find out what was wrong. "Who's the patient?" a doctor asked once we had entered the building. "We have a sixteen-year-old female. She collapsed at a school dance and is currently unresponsive,"
"Okay, we need to get her in Trauma straight away and get her checked. Was she with anyone at the time?" "Yes, she was with me and a few of our friends," I spoke up. One of the doctors looked over at me, and from the looks of him, he looked a little too young to be a doctor. But I didn't care about how old he was. I just needed to know if Dusk would be okay. "Oh my God, Dusk!" A few voices called out. I looked over and saw that some of our friends just got to the hospital as well.
Klaus held back Veronica as we got a quick glance at Dusk as she was rushed down the hall. "Let go of me! What if she dies?!" Veronica sobbed. "Can someone help me?" Klaus looked over to a few of his friends. I rushed over to them, and so did Violet. But despite being held back by three people, Veronica managed to break free and rush down the hall after Dusk. "Veronica!" We called out to her as we took off after her.
We rushed past so many nurses and doctors, some of whom told us that we couldn't be in the Trauma Ward. We eventually caught up with Veronica and saw her staring at Dusk as she was placed on a gurney. "Dusk?" She asked. "What is she doing in here? Miss, you can't be in here!" One of the doctors protested. Veronica protested with them back and refused to get out while we tried to grab her and take her out of the ward, but she wouldn't budge.
"She's my friend, and she could be dying!" Veronica sobbed. "Veronica, please! The doctors are doing everything that they can!" I said, trying to keep myself from choking up. Veronica collapsed into Klaus' arms when he wrapped his arms around her and continued to cry into his chest. We walked out of the Trauma Ward and headed to the waiting room to hear about Dusk's condition, and by the time we got there, I saw Dusk's father and mother were there. "What's going on with my baby?" Mrs. Denouement asked.
"We don't know anything. They wouldn't tell us," I answered, trying to sound calm. But, it was hard to do with my girlfriend being in the hospital. The wait went on for half an hour, then one hour, and now we had been sitting in those chairs for nearly two hours. Then finally an older man in a white doctor's coat walked into the room and walked towards us, cleaning his glasses before sitting next to Dusk's parents.
"How is she?" Mr. Denouement asked. The doctor let out a small sigh and looked over at me and the others. "I need to talk to Mr. and Mrs. Denouement alone," he said to us. I looked over at Veronica, whose eyes were wide as saucers. She looked like she wanted to protest. But I think after what happened in the Trauma Ward, she didn't say anything. "Come on, guys. Let's give them some space," I said as I stood up from my chair. The eight of us walked out of the waiting room and out to the front as we waited for our parents to pick us up.
"I wish they could tell us what's wrong with her," Veronica sighed. "Me too," I responded. I looked over at Veronica for a moment, and I heard a car pull up in front of the hospital. The window rolled down slightly, and I looked up to see my parents were waiting for me and my siblings to get in. "I got to go," I said, giving Veronica and small and quick hug before I got into the backseat of the car.
As we were driving back home, the memory of what happened back at the dance replayed inside my head. We were all having a good time, dancing like it was the end of the world, and then Dusk suddenly collapsed, and people started crowding around us, trying to find out what happened to her. "SOMEBODY HELP! SOMEBODY HELP PLEASE!" I called out. Dusk's father and Mr. Snicket rushed over to her and told people to get back and call for an ambulance.
After that, I vaguely remember anything. But I can imagine they shut down the dance and sent everyone home. "Quigley, are you okay?" Isadora asked, bringing me out of my flashback. "No, Izzy, I'm scared out of my mind," I answered. "I understand, but don't worry. When they're ready, Dusk and her family will tell us what's wrong with her," Isadora said as she gently rubbed my back, slightly comforting me.
"I hope so,"
