Five: The Family Dinner
After cheering up Veronica, I went back to my father's office where he was waiting for me, and we walked out of the school and drove back home. "Mother, we're home," I said as soon as we walked through the front door. She poked her head out from the kitchen, and I could tell that she was exhausted. "Your just in time for dinner," she smiled as lightly embraced us.
I glanced over at the grandfather clock that was in the sitting room, and I saw that it was already 5:00. "Where's Beatrice?" I asked wanting to say hi to my little sister. "She's already in the dining room, she woke up from her nap a half an hour ago," Mother answered. When I walked into the kitchen, I saw Beatrice smiling and waving at me, and it warmed my heart to see her after a long, difficult day.
"Hey Bea, I missed you!" I smiled as I softly kissed her cheek. She let out a small laugh and I took a seat next to her. Mother sat a large bowl of spaghetti on the table along with another bowl full of salad. "This looks really good!" I smiled as I scooped a large amount of spaghetti onto my plate. "So, how was school, Dusk?" Mother asked taking a bite of her salad.
I wanted to tell her about what happened with Carmelita, but I didn't want her to freak out and pull me out of the school. So, instead I tried to remember good stuff about my first day. "It was good, I made some new friends," I answered. "Who are some of your friends?" she asked. "I met a few girls, one of them is named Veronica, her stepfather is the drama teacher,"
She continued to ask about what happened in my classes, I was careful enough not to mention Carmelita Spats or her threat to make my life a living hell. "Well, I'm glad you had a good day," Mother said when I was done talking about my day. Father went on to talk about his day, and I looked over at Beatrice while I continued to eat my dinner.
I couldn't wait to go back to school tomorrow, even though I should've been really scared of Carmelita, but I decided that I was not going to let her bother me. "Can I please be excused? I need to get some homework done," I asked when I had cleared off my plate. "Sure," Father answered.
I kissed my little sister on her cheek and headed upstairs to my bedroom with my backpack in hand. I didn't have that much homework, just a few pages of History, a few math problems, and a sheet of Chemistry questions. But, as I started working on the Chemistry questions, I couldn't stop thinking about Quigley, and how he was so kind to step in and rescue me from Carmelita's snarky remarks.
I couldn't stop thinking about him, and it started to become obvious that I was developing a crush on him. But, I couldn't just tell him I had feelings for him, we only knew each other for one day, I would have to wait and see how our friendship would go, and hopefully, with time, I would tell him.
