The Churchill Club
Everyone sit down and listen!! I'm going to tell you a bit about the Churchill Club!
During World War II, Germany attacked my country. He said to me and other Danish authorities "Comply, give us your food and transport system, work for us, and we'll leave your cities standing. You can continue to police and govern yourselves. We'll even buy materials and goods from you. You'll make money. You'll learn to like us. And after the war you'll share in a glorious future with us. Or you can resist and be demolished."
My army was pretty weak back then and we didn't want Germany to attack so we accepted. Bad idea, right?
On the same day that we accepted, Germany invaded Norway! Norway fought back as hard as he could. When Germany told Norway to surrender, Norway rejected. Germany captured Norwegain ports and cities but Norway kept fighting. I was worried but I couldn't help Norway because of my new alliance with Germany.
A fourteen-year-old boy named Knud Pedersen from Odense was angry at the Germans for invading. He was inspired by Norway's courage and was ashamed of me for accepting Germany's deal... Knud and his brother Jens then gathered a group of boys and vowed to fight back to achieve what they called "Norwegian conditions."
When Knud's family moved to Aalborg, Knud and Jens organized a new group of boys who felt the same way as them. These group of boys called themselves the Churchill Club, after England's leader Winston Churchill, whose fighting spirit they admired!
The Chruchill Club stole the Germans' weapons and destroyed other German belongings. The best part is that they did all of that on bikes! Germany was annoyed and angry because of these boys and wanted to arrest and punish them. They made sure to warn me and the authorities in time, which caused us to become aware of the Germans. This inspired many Danes to fight back against Germany!
The Churchill Club would've never existed if Norway hadn't fought back! Thank you for your courage, Norway!
