27:The Familiar
***Rin's POV***
It had been a week since that day. The day that I didn't like, but needed to think about. Ayana acted like it never even happened. She still kept that smile of hers and was her carefree self. However, I knew she still didn't want to talk about it. Ever since then, whenever I tried to ask her why she trusted me so easily, she would either brush it off or change the topic.
And I haven't been able to even talk to her properly either. Even though we live in the same dorm, the only time I ever see her is when she comes to eat, and during class. I could never find her at lunch either.
I still don't get it. Why can't Ayana tell me her reason? It had been bothering me.
I needed to wait for the right moment to ask her again. But I also didn't want to annoy her any further.
Today was the day Ayana would try to summon a demon after all.
Yukio had told me not to tick Ayana off much. If she really did have the potential to summon a familiar and be a tamer; she needed to be calm and collected for it.
Right now it's lunch, but I didn't really have an appetite at the moment; so I had an hour to do whatever. I had been walking down the school path for a while. The wind felt nice, and not many other students were around either. Most were probably at the cafeteria anyway. Most being their rich selves with all that money....-.-
But then I noticed something on a tree branch... Or should I say someone.
With that black hair, and black tail; with a sword dangling by her hip, who else would it be?
Ayana of course.
But when I got close enough and looked up at the tree she was on, I realized that she was sleeping. Guess she didn't have much an appetite either. But was this where she had been going during lunch?
Ayana slept peacefully as her back leaned against the rough bark of the tree. And her right arm and leg hung limp as they dangled at her side. Her lips were slightly parted as she had a face filled with content.
I stopped just as I was beside the tree she was on. She had left her bag on the ground, so I decided to do the same and climbed on up.
Then, I was sitting in front of her. Ayana continued to sleep soundly as I watched her. The shade dimmed her face, but the sun was able to pass through the leaves in a few places to give Ayana a kind of glow with her True Cross uniform. I noticed her crescent moon pendent swaying side to side as the wind blew it. I felt myself sadden.
I just don't get it Ayana... Why do you need to keep such a secret from me? Why can't you tell me why you trusted me? What is making you be like this? I don't get it at all...
My thoughts were disrupted when I noticed that Ayana was tilting more to the right. She was definitely about to fall. I quickly grabbed her arm, but then her eyes shot open, looking really startled. It looked like she was attempting to move back, but ended up falling... Dragging me with her...
We both yelped and fell to the ground with a thump. Ayana had basically face planted, while I ended up sprawled across her back.
"Ow ow.."
Suddenly, Ayana had shot up, making me fly off her back, and hit the tree. Causing some of the green leaves to fall.
"Rin! What in the world were you doing?!" Ayana yelled at me.
"Huh?! What do you mean?! You were about to fall! I was just trying to help!"
"Help?! That just made it worse!"
"Well, I'm sorry for trying to help out!"
"..."
We were both silent for a while. Just glaring I guess. But when I looked into Ayana's purple eyes; my glaring stopped. I saw so much concern... So much worry... So much confusion. Something had been going on through her mind. Something that was bothering her. She hadn't even told anyone about it.
Suddenly, Ayana had begun to crawl over to where I was. Her hair covered her eyes as she sat beside me by the tree bark, and leaned her back against it like I was as well.
"Sorry..." I heard Ayana mumble.
This caught me by surprise.
"What? What are you apologizing for?" I asked, Ayana looked away from me and said,
"I guess a lot has been going through my mind... So I've been kinda out of it... Haha..." She fake laughed, and I softly smiled at her and nudged her shoulder,
"No worries, I get it," Ayana looked up at me wide eyed,
"Really?" Ayana asked,
"Yeah... I'm sorry too... For y'know... Bothering you about that question and all..."
Ayana looked back at the ground and said, "it's alright..."
"So what were you doing, sleeping up there anyway?" I asked as I looked up the tree; trying to change the subject,
"Oh," Ayana looked up the tree as well,"I don't know... It kind of relaxes me I guess. Since I was so used to sleeping in trees. But I'd say that beds are so much more comfortable!"
I chuckled at this,"yeah, they are aren't they,"
"Yes they are! But there are reasons why I like these trees too."
"The breeze?" I guessed,
"Yeah, for the most part," Ayana smiled,"but I also don't like it much, since certain demons end up waking me up in the strangest ways,"Then she started pinching my cheek making one of my eyes shut.
Is she talking about me? Oh, well I guess I did wake her up just now.
"Not my fault you were going to fall." I argued. Then she laughed and got up on her knees and started pinching both my cheeks,
"Well it would have been less painful if you let me be" she said,
"O-oi... Quit it! That hurts!"I grabbed her wrists, attempting to pry her hands away, but she refused to let go. Only laugh.
Eventually, her grip on my cheeks loosened, but she instead slapped her palms on my cheeks and rubbed them in consistent circles.
Surprisingly, they felt better. But then I managed to say with an awkward laugh,
"What in the world Ayana," she then stopped rubbing my cheeks and... Started poking them instead.
"What's with you and my face right now?" I asked, and she only shrugged.
I then felt something wrap around my ankle. It was her tail. And that's also when I realized how Ayana was directly in front of me and straddling over my legs. She was really close to my face too. My face started to burn. But my thoughts were disturbed when Ayana said,
"Thanks Rin," my eyebrows raised and she continued,"you made me feel a lot better. I'm more relaxed. So thanks." She smiled at me, and I only looked at her in awe. And then I gave her a toothy grin,
"So does that mean your gonna tell me that reason now?"
Ayana chuckled,"I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to say it right now... Sorry Rin." I puffed my cheeks with a smile and replied,
"Alright then I'll wait till you are ready." I heard Ayana sigh. She stood up and said,
"Rin. I don't think I'll ever be able to say it... I just can't. Please just leave it at that alright?"
I stayed silent for a moment then replied, "alright..."
"Thanks"
"You've thanked me enough today." I said then got up and stood in front of her. "Should we get going? I wanna see what kind of demon you possibly summon"
Ayana chuckled and said,
"Don't think I will, but sure. Though I don't really want to be a tamer, so I don't get why I need to." I shrugged and said,
"Well you'll probably be even MORE powerful with a familiar."
***
"Alright Ayana-san, you know what to do right? Just put your blood on that sheet of paper and say what ever comes to mind." Yukio said to Ayana as she had a summoning paper in her hand.
"Yep" Ayana replied and pricked her thumb and said,
"I call upon you from the depths of Gehenna with a majestic yet preyed heart and soul."
Nothing happened for a moment, but suddenly the room was surrounded by white smoke.
Gasps surrounded the room and I yelled "woah!"
When the smoke disappeared, in front of Ayana was...
Another girl?!
She had pale skin with long white hair; and at the top of her head, she had what looked like flat animal ears. She also had bright green eyes. She wore a white shirt with a black skirt, vest, and boots.
"A girl?" Bon questioned,
"Okumura-sensei what demon is it?" Poka-brow asked,
"I've never seen anything like this before..." I heard Yukio mumble. "Normally, the demons summoned don't have a human form..."
I looked at Ayana who looked really shocked. The white-haired girl looked back at Ayana with a blank expression. They were both just staring at each other in silence for a while, until the white-haired gasped.
"Ayana?!" She exclaimed,
What?
"Huh?" Ayana questioned,
"Ayana! Is that really you?!"
Who is this girl?
Ayana didn't seem to recognize her too. Then the unknown girl said as she pointed at herself,
"It's me! Kina! You remember me right?!"
Ayana stayed silent for a moment. Staring at the girl known as Kina, then she suddenly gasped. Ayana's eyes were filled with recognition as she exclaimed,
"Kina?!"
