21: The Vatican Trial
***Third Person's POV***
"May the trial begin."
The court was silent. They all gazed at the Grigori intently. Waiting for what else they will say. After a long moment of silence, an exorcist that stood beside the three Grigori finally said,
"Mephisto Pheles. You have offered to defend Ayana Mizuki for this trial. So will you tell us why we should let this demon live?"
Mephisto smirked, opened his arms wide and spoke, "my fellow exorcists! We all remember the trail of Rin Okumura; the son of Satan, yes?"Murmurs and slight nods engulfed the court, and Mephisto continued, "well Rin Okumura has been a very useful weapon to us. He saved Assiah from the destruction of Satan along with the other demons raiding!"
"So what does this have to do with this demon?" The pink cloaked Grigori asked. Then Mephisto replied,
"Ayana-San can be an even more powerful weapon to us. You have probably concluded that she possesses even more power than Rin Okumura, yes?"
The blue cloaked Grigori then said, "that may be true, sir Pheles, but that doesn't mean we should let this demon live. She has killed 26 exorcists. That will come with a very large price. More precisely, death."
There were more murmurs of agreement around the court. Rin glared around, and clenched his teeth. Things weren't looking too good for Ayana right now. And Rin couldn't do anything about it. He just wanted to jump down and start yelling at everyone. Maybe even grab Ayana and run as far as possible with her. But he couldn't do that. He knew Ayana wouldn't allow it. She'd want to face to consequences, no matter how terrible it was. Then Mephisto raised his hand, and when the murmurs subsided, he said,
"Yes, it's true. Ayana-San has done some awful things. But I am not saying to just let her off with no consequences."
"Then what are you saying, Sir Pheles?" The pink cloaked Grigori asked,
"It would be a waste to execute this powerful weapon..." Mephisto placed his hand on Ayana's shoulder, which made her glance at him. Mephisto continued, "so I'm saying, that you may give her a punishment worthy enough, but also let her become an exorcist!"
Gasps, yells and loud murmurs surrounded the court as everyone, including Ayana, looked at Mephisto wide-eyed. Finally the green cloaked Grigori exclaimed,
"Sir Pheles! You are proposing to allow this demon become an exorcist?!"
"Yes."
The Grigori in the blue cloak then said, "we have already allowed the son of Satan, to become an exorcist; now you want us to allow another demon?! That's just preposterous, Sir Pheles!"
"I think not" Mephisto replied with his finger pointed upward, "we all know that Satan is not dead. There may be a chance he will come back. And maybe even stronger. We may need more than just one demon to help us. And if we have Ayana-San here, we may be able to destroy Satan for good."
The Grigori was silent. Then they spoke amongst themselves to each other. Everyone waited patiently for what they would say. And Ayana was the most anxious.
They finally nodded to each other, then the pink cloaked Grigori spoke, "we will consider this. But there is also another thing we would like to ask."
"We were told, that Ayana Mizuki has known the son of Satan. Is this true?" The green cloaked exorcist asked
"Yes." Ayana replied.
"And how long have you known him?" The pink cloaked Grigori asked, and Ayana replied,
"Well... I met him when we were nine. But about three months later, my demonic side awoken. That's also when my real father came to take me to Gehenna."
"Who is your father?"
"Yoku. The Wasure demon."
"Wasure?" The blue cloaked Grigori questioned, "we haven't heard of such a demon."
"Well, the Wasure demon means 'The Forgotten demon'. My father has the power to erase people's memories. That's probably why nobody knows who he is. Because he erased everyone's memories."
"But Rin Okumura knew about this the whole time?" The green cloaked Grigori asked,
"No. Before I left Gehenna my father erased Rin's memories as well. But I also have to power to regain memories, so Rin remembers now."
"I see..." The blue cloaked Grigori then called, "Rin Okumura!"
"W-woah!"
Everyone turned to the direction of Rin. Who had just fallen off the stands and onto to the ground with a loud thump. He had been leaning over the stands the entire time, so the Grigori calling him out startled him. Which made him fall. Rin slowly got up and rubbed his head.
"Owowow... Uhh s-sorry."
Everyone was looking at Rin emotionless, and the lead exorcists looked at him unamused. Yukio had begun to rub his temples, then murmured to himself "that idiot..."
The blue cloaked Grigori then sighed, "anyways... Rin Okumura."
Rin quickly stood up straight, and said "yes!"
"Is what Ayana Mizuki saying true?"
Rin relaxed, then replied, "yeah..."
The three Grigori were quiet for a moment then they all looked back at Ayana. The green cloaked Grigori then said,
"Ayana Mizuki. So Rin Okumura says that your statement is true. But that is also just one person, who says they remember you. Do you have any other proof, so we know you aren't just tricking us all, and Rin Okumura as well."
Ayana remained silent. And everyone looked at her intently. Suddenly she gasped, which made some people jump in their place. Ayana's head jerked up to the Grigori with a smile on her face. She nodded and said "Yes! I do!"
Ayana was about to get something from the pocket of her cloak; but then she realized she was still handcuffed.
"Umm..."
The Grigori looked at her noticing that she wanted to get something from her pocket. The exorcist that was beside the three said,
"Sir Pheles. Please take the evidence."
Mephisto bowed, then walked over to Ayana.
"In my right pocket" she murmured. Then Mephisto slid his hand into her pocket and pulled out a small paper. He looked at it. Then glanced at Ayana. Then back at the paper.
Another exorcist walked beside Mephisto, and then Mephisto gave the paper to the exorcist. He walked up to the top of the stand where the Grigori was. When he got there, he gave it to the closest person. The green cloaked Grigori.
He looked at it for a while, then gave the paper to the blue cloaked Grigori, then after he looked at it; he gave the paper to the pink cloaked Grigori. After they all looked at it, they spoke quietly to each other.
Rin wondered what Ayana showed them. He was still standing in the same place that he fell. Looking confusedly at Ayana. Ayana could feel Rin staring at her, so she turned her head to him. They both gazed at each other. Rin looked at her with a confused expression as she looked at him with a small smile on her face.
Then Ayana looked back at the Grigori when the blue cloaked one said,
"... Alright... We can trust that Ayana Mizuki did live in Assiah, and had a friendship with Rin Okumura. But now we must ask... Why should we let you live, Ayana Mizuki."
Ayana looked at them confused, but then looked to the ground and said,
"I don't really have a good reason why you should let me live..." She paused to look up at everyone, "but I just want to say... I know I did terrible things.... I know it was wrong to kill those exorcists.... I regret what I did... I wish I could bring them all back... I wish I knew all their names... I wish I could just go back in time and change my actions... I'm sorry everyone... I'm truly sorry...."
The court was silent. No sounds. No movements. Everyone was frozen. Until Ayana bowed to the exorcists and finally said,
"But please... I would be very grateful if you let me live. Let me live a new life where I can fix the mistakes I made... Please..."
The three Grigori looked at each other, then back at Ayana.
"You will need to be punished anyway, Ayana Mizuki." The pink cloaked Grigori said, and Ayana replied, still bowing,
"Yes. I gladly accept that."
"Will you protect Assiah against the demons of Gehenna?" The green cloaked Grigori asked,
"Yes."
"Then, we will have a vote." The pink cloaked Grigori said,"... All in favour of Ayana Mizuki to be executed, please raise your hand."
A few hands raised. While Ayana continued to bow. Not wanting to see the hands raised.
"All oppose?"
Ayana could only hear silence. She wasn't sure if anyone raised their hands or not.
"Then." The blue cloaked Grigori said, "you will be under full supervision for the next month. Just to make sure you don't do anything that may harm our exorcists or the citizens of True Cross Town."
Ayana's eyes widened when she realized what they were saying. She slowly lifted her head and the Grigori continued,
"you will be an Exwire with the Exwire class, and train to become an exorcist."
"R-really?!" Ayana was shocked. She really wasn't expecting this to happen.
"Do you want us to change our mind?" The pink cloaked Grigori asked.
"N-no! Thank you!" Ayana quickly went on her knees and begun bowing to them again. "Thank you so much!"
"Umm... This trial is concluded!" The blue cloaked Grigori called. "Shura Kirigakure!"
"Yes!" Shura walked forward and the Grigori said,
"We will let you decide Ayana Mizuki's punishment."
"Yes."
"Now, you may all leave."
The two exorcists that brought Ayana in, came up to the stand where Ayana was bowing, pulled her up.
"Come on." One of them said to her with a slight smile on his face. Ayana got up and turned around to walk with them. Mephisto followed behind them.
Rin had a huge smile plastered on his face as he watched Ayana leave. He was about to walk after her, until Yukio grabbed his collar.
"Woah! When did you get here?!" Rin exclaimed, as he looked at his brother.
"I was here the whole time." Yukio replied.
"Oh... So-"
"You still have to wait, Nii-San."
Rin pouted, "why?! The trials done. And she's allowed to live!"
"She now needs to speak with Sir Pheles, about being an Exwire, possibly a student at the academy, and probably a lot of paper work. It may take some time... You'll just need to wait alright?"
"Alright."
Rin didn't even bother to protest. He was too happy right now.
Ayana can live. She can now live a free, happy life.
