20:Ready For the Consequences

***Rin's POV***

I was still just lying down under a bush, waiting for an exorcist to come and open the door. Don't know how long it's been, but I just hope someone comes soon! My legs are starting to cramp from staying in this awkward position for however long it's been... Then I heard,

"Rin, why are you hiding?"

I jumped on the spot, and I was about to get out of the bush until I actually registered the voice. It was Kuro. I looked to my left, and saw him sitting beside me. Curiosity filled in his eyes. I sighed and replied,

"Just waiting for someone to come and open the door."

"It's locked?"

"Yeah..."

"That door is for the exorcists isn't it?"

"Mm hmm"

Kuro looked at the door and then looked back at me and said,

"Y'know Rin, I saw Yukio earlier, standing by a door at the other side," he pointed to the other side of the building,"He told the lady named Shura, that he was going to wait for you to come."

"Huh?" I stared at Kuro for a while, dumbfounded. Then yelled,"SERIOUSLY?! HE'S WAITING FOR ME?!!!"

Kuro nodded. I got up out of the bush right away, and in front of me, an exorcist was standing in front of the door, about to unlock it. She had black hair tied into a ponytail, brown eyes, and wore the traditional exorcist attire. I groaned at her.

"You come now?!" She looked at me confused but I ran towards the other side of the school, before explaining anything else. Kuro followed straight behind me. And jumped on my shoulder as I ran.

"Damn that Bon! Making me wait so long for nothing." I growled to myself and then Kuro said,

"So how come Yukio is waiting for you?"

I explained to Kuro the situation with Ayana and her possible trial. When I was finished, we had already reached the door where Yukio was standing and waiting. He was leaning on the side of the door frame, as he was looking to the ground with his arms crossed and eyebrows furrowed. He looked like he was in deep thought. As I walked over to him, he finally noticed my presence and looked up at me.

"Ahh, you're here Nii-San." He gave me a forced smile.

Something's wrong. I know something is. But what is it? Could it be about Ayana? Probably.

"What is it four-eyes." I got straight to the point, and he looked at me confused.

"What do you mean?"

"I can see right through you, Yukio. Something's bothering you. Tell me. Is it Ayana? Is she okay?"

Yukio was silent. Just starring at me with no emotion. Then, he sighed and and actually softly smiled at me.

"Well, she's fine. But I don't think it'll stay that way Nii-San."

"What?"

"You know about her crimes right? Well, letting her live is not a very likely option for Ayana-San. Considering what she's done. I did try my best to help, but the best I could do was get her a trial. They were planning to just execute her right away..." Yukio then looked behind him, to Vatican HQ. I could hear footsteps behind him. So, I craned my neck to see over Yukio's shoulder, and saw her.

Ayana.

She didn't notice us though. She was walking, head down, with her hands cuffed behind her back. Two exorcists were walking slightly behind her, both holding either sides of Ayana's arms and leading her somewhere.

"Looks like Ayana-san's trial is about to begin." Yukio murmured.

"Ayana!" I yelled. I could tell Yukio was shocked by my yell, cause he slightly jump in place.

I saw Ayana jerk to a stop. And the two exorcists looked at her annoyed.

"Come on, keep moving." One of them said as he nudged her forward. But she refused to move. Only stand frozen in place.

"Ayana!" I repeated.

Ayana's head slowly rose up and then she looked to her left at me with those bright purple eyes.

"Come on, we need to go." The exorcist nudged her again, and she jerked forward, but stopped again right after.

Ayana looked at me again and softly smiled. She mouthed something to me, then the two exorcists tightened their grip on her arms and turned her around to keep walking.

What she mouthed came into my mind.

"I'm sorry."

She's sorry? Why is she apologizing? She doesn't need to, damn it! I clenched my teeth and ran through the door after her, but Yukio said,

"wait, Nii-San" and stopped me by grabbing the back of my shirt collar, which made me yelp. I glared at him and was about to yell at him, but he said,"You can't see her right now."

"Why?!"

"Because her trial is about to begin. We need to go to the side stands. And no one is allowed to visit her before the trial. I'm sorry Nii-San, but that's just how it is..."

"But-"

"Please Rin! If you try to do anything more, you may make it worse for Ayana-San. She's already in a bad position as it is..."

I could tell my eyes were filled with anger, but I had to oblige with what Yukio was saying. I didn't want to make anything worse for Ayana... So I mumbled as I looked to the ground,

"Fine. Let's go."

***Ayana's POV***

Rin's here? Well, of course he is. He wouldn't miss something like this. But... It's also is just like him to do exactly that.

I'm right now heading to my trial. Two exorcists came to my jail cell a few minutes ago to take me there. And on my way there, I saw Rin. He looked really worried when I looked at him. I didn't want him to feel that way. Not for me... It did give me a nice feeling to know that someone really cares for me like he does, but it also hurt to see his face so sad... I mouthed "I'm sorry" to him. For having to leave him again like this. I didn't want to but... I really need to face the consequences, don't I?

Yeah I know... I probably made Rin really confused. He's probably thinking something around the lines "you don't need to apologize!" But I just needed to...

Before I knew it, I had entered a large court. The entire court was painted with shimmering gold and maroon. Exorcists in their black uniforms and exorcist pins on their chests; all stood around the Court on the side stands.

Three people stood at the top front stand. The one on the left was cloaked pink. The one on the right was cloaked green and the middle one was cloaked blue. Their faces were completely covered and you could only see their chin. One of them had a long grey beard. They must be the Grigori

Mephisto stood at a stand in the centre of the whole court, and looked at me with his usual mischievous smirk. Then, the two exorcists had begun to push me forward.

I didn't even realize we stopped before.

They led me to the stairs of the stand and walked me up to the top, until I stood beside Mephisto. They then both turned and left to sit at the side stands.

I looked to Mephisto who only nodded to me, then I looked around and scanned to crowd of exorcist.

Eventually, my eyes locked on Rin.

I don't know how I didn't notice him right away, because he was the only one standing. And he was even leaning over the rail. It looked like he was going to fall any second.

Yukio was there beside him too, but it looked like he was more focused on the Grigori. My thoughts were disrupted by the blue cloaked Grigori.

"We are here today for the verdict of Ayana Mizuki. A half demon, with a crime of the murder of 26 exorcists."

"26?!" I could tell it was Rin who said this, but I didn't bother to look at him. I kept my eyes locked on the Grigori. I could also hear quick murmurs coming from the exorcists. But an exorcist who stood up beside the three judges, held his hand up, and the murmurs subsided. Then the blue cloaked exorcist continued,

"May the trial begin."
