3. What Comes After
Katherine had been latched onto Bill's arm as they exited the restaurant. She had left a large tip for the waitress, mostly for the damage that was caused.
"That's just what Pennywise does, right?" Eddie asked. "He fucks with us. So Stanley's probably fine."
Beverly began to dig in her purse. "Hey, Mike. Do you have Stan's number?" she asked.
"Yeah," Mike answered.
"Hey, Richie," a voice called.
The losers all stopped to see a young boy, Dean, standing there, looking up at the comedian.
"How you-How'd you know my name?" Richie asked him.
Dean pulled his lips back in a smile. "The fun's just beginning. Right?"
The moment of what happened not too long ago got to their heads. Eddie questioned anxiously, "Is that-"
Richie lowered himself face to face with Dean. "Listen, you think this is funny? You think this is some sort of game, huh?" He grabbed Dean by the arm. "Well, fuck you, all right?!"
"Rich, be careful," Bill told him.
"Fuck you! I'm not afraid of you!"
Dean had a horrified look on his face. "' The fun's just beginning'," he quoted. "It's a line from your act, dude. I'm a fan."
Katherine walked over to pull Richie's hand off the boy. "I don't think jail's a fun place to be," she whispered to him.
He ignored her and asked Dean, "Are those your parents?"
Dean glanced behind him to see two adults and a little girl approaching to which he answers, "Yeah."
Richie's expression changed into a small smile. "You want a picture?"
"I think I'm good," Dean answered but saw Katherine pulling Richie back. "Wait, Katy Angel?"
Katherine's flustered expression turned into a friendly look. "Yes?" she asked softly.
"Can I have your autograph?" Dean asked her with a sweet smile.
"Sure," Katherine answered as Dean handed her his notebook, probably for drawing or doodling while he was waiting for his food to come.
Katherine signed the notebook, sending Dean a wink before giving back the notebook.
As Dean walked back to his parents, Richie called, "Okay, cool. He's a cute kid."
As the family walked away from them, Katherine's kind smile faded into her worried expression as they also walked out of the restaurant.
"Jesus, Richie. You don't remember a line from your own show?" Ben asked.
Richie slouched forward. "I don't write my own material," he admits.
At the same time, Eddie and Katherine spoke:
"I fucking knew it!"
"Called it!"
As they exited out into the warm weather, Beverly got in contact with someone. "Hello, Mrs. Uris. My name's Beverly Marsh. I apologize for calling but I'm an old friend of your husband's."
Katherine clutched onto her husband's hand. "Billy, I have a bad feeling about Stan," she told him quietly as Richie and Eddie blamed Mile for lying to them.
Bill rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand to try and calm her. "I'm sure S-S-Stan just got..." He tried to think of something. "I'm sure his flight got delayed."
He would soon regret saying that as Patty sighs tearfully on the other end of the phone. "Oh...He passed."
Katherine covered her mouth in shock, pulling away from Bill to turn away from everyone as tears stung her eyes.
"When did it happen?" Beverly asked.
"Yesterday," Patty answered. "It was horrible, the way he died. His wrists..."
"In the bathtub," Beverly uttered.
"...In the bathtub."
Katherine hunched over as she felt her stomach doing horrible knots and turns as her friend's loss.
Ben walked over to her. "Kat..." he began.
Katherine looked to him and he saw the tears she had tried to keep in and hide away from him. "I'm sorry," she told him, her voice cracking.
He just pulled her in a hug as she tried to suppress her tears by pressing her face into his shoulder.
"I'm sorry. I have to go," Patty spoke.
"We're all very sorry, Patty," Beverly told her.
"Thank you."
Ben parted from Katherine to check on Beverly. Katherine walked over and hugged Bill, tears spilling over as he hugged her back, trying to hold back his own tears to be strong for her.
She remembered Stan's words all those years ago when she saw Stan's stressed expression.
Then, she turned to Stan. "Are you okay?" she asked, sensing his nervousness.
"I swear, Katherine," was all he said.
"Stanely," Eddie began. "Pennywise knew. He knew before we did."
"We have to stop him. I have a plan," Mike said.
"I got a plan. Getting the fuck out of Dodge before this ends worse than one of Bill's books. Who's with me?" Richie asked to which Eddie raised his hand.
"We made a promise to each other," Mike replied.
"So let's un-make the promise."
"Richie, other people are gonna die," Ben told him.
"Other people die every day, man! We don't owe this town shit! Plus, I just remembered I grew up here, like, two hours ago. So, I'm fucking leaving. Fuck this."
"I'm sorry, man. I'm with Richie on this," Eddie told Mike before looking to Katherine, waving goodbye to his best friend.
"Eds, please," Mike pleaded.
"What? We stay, we die, that's it? I'm gonna go back to the inn, I'm gonna pack up my shit, and I'm gonna drive to my home. I'm sorry, good luck."
Mike pleaded for everyone to stay but they all left except for Bill and Katherine.
"I don't feel good," Katherine told Bill, rubbing her stomach.
"Okay, we're gonna go back to the Town House, tell Peter we're on our way back," Bill told her, grabbing her hand but he said, "You should've told us, Mikey."
"Bill, Kat, please," Mike begged. "I'm begging you. Please just listen to me. Please."
"What are you gonna say," Bill spoke. "What could you possibly say that would make a difference? They're all gone."
"We can't stay, Mike," Katherine added. "We have our own lives now and our son is waiting back home for us. I don't want to die before I can see Peter do great things."
"Come on. Let me show you something. One thing. And if you want, you can leave. Just let me show you this first please," Mike pleaded.
"I can't, okay?" Katherine told him. "I feel like shit right now and I just want to go home and lie down."
Bill spoke softly to her. "Why don't we listen to what he has to say? Maybe something can change."
"Bill..."
"Or I'll listen. You can go back to the Inn and rest, I'll go with Mike and see what he has to say. I'll be back."
"Okay," Katherine agreed, cupping his face and kissing him lovingly. "I love you. Be careful."
"I love you too," Bill told her.
Katherine parted from Bill, walking to the rental. She got in, trying to take deep breaths and ease her headache before putting on her seatbelt and driving towards the Derry Town House.
She tried to relax but she was feeling nausea wash over her.
Shortly, Katherine pulled up to the Town House behind Eddie's car. She climbed out, following the losers up the steps.
"Let's get our shit and get the fuck out of here," Richie says, entering the Town House.
"Did you leave your stuff here?" Eddie asked Ben and Katherine.
"No, my stuff's still in the car," Ben stated.
"Yeah, Bill's and I's stuff is upstairs," Katherine answered, following Richie and Eddie upstairs.
She went to her room, falling back onto the bed. She lied back on her side trying to calm her headache.
She pulled the pillow close to her but froze as a sudden memory came to her.
She didn't remember exactly what happened but she remembered what she said as she was on the verge of turning 14-years-old.
"You made my life miserable for so long. I've taken your beatings and your harsh words from the moment I wake up to the moment I came home. Now you're in the one in the hospital, not me. And I'm going to use that to my advantage. You stop breathing and I'll be celebrating."
Katherine shoved the pillow away from her and sat up.
She remembers what she did and she felt disgusted with herself.
"Hey," someone said. It was Richie. "Kitty-Kat, come on. Are you coming or what?"
"Can't," she answered. "Bill's with Mike."
"Well, come downstairs, hot mama. I wanna get a goodbye from you."
With a huff, Katherine stood up, walking downstairs shortly behind Richie.
They went near the bar where Ben and Beverly were.
"Whatever you guys are talking about, let's make it happen faster, all right?" Richie said to them before turning towards the stairs. "Edwardo, andale! Let's go!"
"You knew how Stanley died. You knew," Ben told Bev quietly.
Katherine heard though. "Wait, what?" she questioned.
"I can't do this," Bev said, walking towards the front.
"She knew how Stanley was going to die, is that what she just said?" Richie questioned.
"Is she for real?" Katherine asked, sinking in a chair near the bar.
"You can't just walk away from this," Ben told her, following her to the front desk. "How did you know where he killed himself?" Beverly didn't answer and walked towards the back to grab her room key. "Bev. Talk to me. Just talk to me. Like we used to. Come on, how did you know?"
"Because I saw it," Beverly answered, stopping in front of Ben. "I've seen all of us die."
Katherine gaped at this as her eyes shifted to all her ex-friends.
Eddie came downstairs, struggling with his luggage. "Okay, I just to grab my toiletry bag, and then we can go." He dropped his bag when he saw everyone's shocked expressions. "What'd I miss?"
"A lot, Eds," Katherine answered, resting her head on the table. "Beverly knew how Stan died," she added, standing up as Beverly sunk in a chair beside her and Richie walked behind the bar. "She's seen all of us die."
“What? What do you mean you’ve seen us all die?” Eddie now asked the redhead, anxious to hear the answer.
“Yeah cause I gotta be honest, that’s a fucked-up thing to just drop on somebody,” Richie added.
Beverly wiped a fallen tear. "Every night since Derry, I've been having these nightmares. People in pain, people dying. People..."
Katherine rested her hand over Beverly's to calm her.
"So people have nightmares," Eddie told her. "I have nightmares but that's doesn't mean your visions are true."
Beverly took a deep, shaky breath. "I've watched every single one of us..." She looked at Katherine with sadness as if she was hiding something from the blond.
"Y-You've seen every single one of us, what?" Bill asked, entering the townhouse with Mike behind him.
"Billy," Katherine uttered, somewhat calming at her husband's presence.
"At the place, Stanley wound up...That's how we end," Beverly told him. "Bill, I'm sorry. Katherine was..." Beverly trailed off, looking to Katherine.
"I was what?" Katherine asked although she was nervous to ask.
"You were gone and yours...it was the most brutal death I've seen," Beverly answered, tearfully.
Katherine tried to look anywhere but Beverly as Bill took a place beside Katherine, taking her hands in his and rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand to soothe her.
"Okay, how come the rest of us aren't seeing that shit?" Richie asked. "I mean, what makes her so different?"
"The Deadlights," Mike answered.
"The Deadlights," Katherine repeated slowly, getting a small flashback of running through the sewers as a kid and seeing Beverly floating in the air.
"She was the only one of us that got c-c-caught in the Deadlights that day," Bill began.
"We were all touched by it. Changed. Deep down. Like an infection or a virus. A virus. You understand," he looked to Eddie. "Slowly growing. That virus, it's been growing for 27 years. This whole time, metastasizing. It just got to Stan first, because..."
"He was the weakest," Richie stated.
Katherine sent him a look. "Shut up," she snapped.
"Just saying what everyone else is thinking."
She just sent Richie the bird.
"What Beverly sees," Mike continued. "It will come to pass. It's what'll happen to us, eventually, unless we stop it."
"How the hell are we suppose to do that?" Eddie asked.
"The Ritual of Chüd," Mike answered. "The Shokopiwah. The first ones who fought IT, they have a saying. 'All living things must abide by the laws of the shape they inhabit.''
"A tribal ritual?" Richie questioned.
"Are you fucking kidding me, man? All right, there's gotta be another way. Okay? This thing comes back, what, every 27 years? Let's just kick the can down the road and do it then."
"Wait, we'll be 70 years old, asshole," Eddie said.
"It doesn't work that way," Bev said. "None of us make it another 20 years and the way it happens..." She placed her hand on Katherine's leg to make sure her best friend was still there.
"So if we don't beat IT this cycle, then..." Ben trailed off.
"We die," Bill answered.
"Horribly," Eddie added.
"Yeah, I don't need the 'horribly' part, Eds," Katherine told him, resting her head on Bill's arm.
"I didn't say it. She said it. Not me," Eddie said, nodding to Beverly.
"All right, guys. Look," Bill began. "I've seen w-w-what he's talking about and it's all true. It's the only way. If we want this ritual to work..."
"We have to remember," Mike finished.
"Remember what?" Richie asked.
"It's better if I show you. We don't have much time. His cycle will end soon. And once it does..."
"We're fucked," Eddie finished.
Bill looked at Katherine. They had to beat IT otherwise he'd lose the most important person in his life in a brutal death.
He couldn't let that happen.
He won't.
