chapter 42

             Late Saturday afternoon....

Neil paced through the small apartment, in anticipation of seeing his beloved. He knew that she wouldn't be there for a while but he couldn't contain his nervous excitement. He couldn't wait to see her after a short work day at Merlin's trunk. He had the place spotless, everything had been arranged to perfection he had wine chilling in the fridge. There were two glasses set on the coffee table. He had candles ready to be lit for the evening and he had even drove to the flower shop for a bouquet of flowers he had set in a vase in the kitchen to make the place more inviting to her. He wasn't sure if she liked flowers but he wanted to do something to make a night with her extra special, just because he loved her. He sipped coffee and re-arranged the flowers four times as he paced through his home, waiting for her. He planned to surprise her with the necklace, so he hid the small dark blue velvet box in his pocket.

Sipping at another cup, he didn't know why he'd been so nervous. They had been dating for over half a year now. He knew he thought of her more than anything else. He tried to do anything he could to keep his mind off of the time but seemed to force himself not to look at the clock every three minutes. It was nearly five o'clock and he knew she would be there any moment. He smiled nearly blushing. He felt like a teenager again. It amazed him how she could do that to him and she wasn't even there. He tried to bide his time with coffee and his dream book, but he had noticed a lot of entries were more like warnings from Adriella. He also noticed it had been over a month and a half since the last demon attack. He thought maybe they were done screwing with the mortal realm.

He hoped, anyway. Neil flipped through his dream book getting lost in it when he heard a knock on the door. He jumped up, dropping the book and nearly spilling the coffee he had been sipping to get to it.  Opening the door as quickly as he could he smiled at her and stepped to the side so that she could come in.

"I'm so glad you made it here." He exclaimed to her.

"Me too."

"How was work?" He asked making idle conversation.

"It was a slow day. There weren't as many shoppers as usual for a saturday." She informed him.

"That's a shame, but cheer up. I bought a new brand of red wine or would you prefer coffee?"

"The day i'm having I may need both." She joked.

Then he remembered he hadn't lit the candles, he quickly did that first. Then he poured her a large cup of coffee and brought it to her.

"Oh thank you dear so much. Did you buy flowers?" She asked.

"Yes, do you like them?"

"They're beautiful." She replied, a little surprised.

"Go on and sit wherever you like and relax I'll bring the wine to you." He offered.

"That would be great, thank you."  She replied to him settling onto the small couch in the living room.

He grabbed the first bottle of wine and the opener along with two glasses from the kitchen counter and set them down in front of her. He carefully opened the wine bottle with only slight resistance. Then poured the first glass for her and one for himself.

"Here you are honey. I missed you a lot." He admitted to her.

"I missed you as well." She replied taking a sip of the dark red liquid.

He took a sip as well.

"This is pretty good, do you like it?"

"Yes it's really good. Better than the kind we had the last time."

"I'll have to remember that for the next time you come over." He commented as he took another long slow sip of it.

He wanted to give her the jewelry but felt he'd like to time it just right. He waited until her glass was near depleated and poured another for her as well as his own.

"Do you feel a little more relaxed now from a long day?" He asked her.

"Yes, I do. How's work going for you?" She asked him.

"Not horrible but yesterday was pretty rough." He told her as they sipped and snuggled up together.

"Why?" She asked.

"Murphys law. What could go wrong with our computer systems did go wrong, the whole damn day was like that."  He told her.

"I bet you're glad to be home."

"Only because you're here with me." He told her and refilled both their glasses.

"You're too sweet." She complimented him.

"Thank you. Oh yes I almost forgot, I have a surprise for you." He told her as her eyes lit up.

"Oh really? What is it?" She asked with the excitement of a little girl.

"Close your eyes." He told her and she giggled.

"Okay." She did as he asked.

Neil pulled the box out of his pocket and unfastened the clasp  and put it around her neck. The moment it touched her bare skin, the diamond cross began to smoke and bubble burning into her the middle of her chest.

Jenna began to scream in pain, like a banshee wailing into the night. She instinctively rips it from her chest and threw it as it burned her hand, too.
