chapter 25
The split second the spirit watcher vanished from his vision, the meditative trance ended and Neil bolted up right as his mind body and spirit were jerked back to the current mortal reality. His mind now at ease from the trouble with the goblin, he waited to consider his next move. He wanted to enjoy his day away from the office, not sit at home worrying about demons, evil creatures that were out to get him or his world literally going to hell. He wanted to just relax but couldn't. Whatever demon was on it's way from the depths of the underworld, he almost didn't want to know- almost. Paranoid, the what if's began to violate his thoughts.
What demon would attack this world next? When and who would be the next victim of these attacks? He would prefer the demons go after him instead of an innocent person that knew nothing of demons or the horror they could inflict on humanity, but there was an unsettling feeling that someone who didn't deserve it would be the next target. He needed to figure it out. The demons seemed to be one step ahead of him and it was driving him insane. Having very few friends was a blessing to him. There weren't many people he spent time with that these creatures could use against him. They already had attacked him,Jenna and possibly Dale. The thought of the whole mess made him sick to his stomach.
He needed to figure out how to get a step ahead of the demons. There were only a few left. Would it be the demon of greed or lust? He wasn't sure of anything anymore. He began to fidget pacing the living room. He needed to stop freaking out over it and just do what he could to defend his life and the lives of others. That was all that could be done. Trying to get his mind on anything else he grabbed the cellphone and went through a few of his messages and poured a cup of joe. He checked through and found a few texts from Bill, his boss. Apparently he had just gotten word of Dale's passing. There were two messages from his mother. He had forgotten to call her in the last few weeks. He knew better than to put that off any longer.
Mom it's me. everything is fine, really. I've been working a lot. i love you too.
He waited a few minutes as the cell beeped in his hand. He glanced at it. His mother must have been waiting for him to text or call her. He couldn't understand why she didn't go out and enjoy her life. She was getting older but in great health for being near seventy.
I will worry about my child as long as I am coherent, boy. I love you, but you need to get off of this thing and find someone. I won't be here forever you know.
Rolling his eyes at the phone he texted back.
Yes, mother I will. bye for now.
He knew better than to argue with her. He wasn't hiding Jenna from her, but they had only been together a few months. He was planning to tell his mom all about Jenna once the demon issue was under control. He was glad to hear from her, knowing she was safe made him feel better.
"She's probably just lonesome." He muttered to himself as he sipped the hot liquid.
She had been on her own for three years now since his father Jim Harrison passed away. He was glad to see his mom, Betty had gotten through it. He couldn't imagine being married to someone for thirty seven years, then poof, a heart attack and he was gone. Neil shook his head, trying to shake the thought of death away from his mind. He needed to concentrate on now instead of then. Now things were complicated for him, but he was glad to have Jenna in his life and a few nice people in his life, but not more than he could deal with. He checked the clock on the phone to see it was just before three p.m. Good, Jenna would be done at the bookstore soon, he thought. He'd have to text her soon to see if she had plans. A little time alone with her always made him feel better.
