chapter 16
The next morning he woke well rested and ready to take on the day. He was usually a happy fellow, but this was even more so than usual. He also remembered it was his day off, which made it even better. He could sit and relax for a while. He got to his feet and put on a pot of strong coffee. He wanted to get more of the book read before he would decide what else to do for the day. He also grabbed a small notepad from his drawer to write out the pesky little nightmare he had experienced, in case it held clues to any future demon attacks. He felt great, like he knew what to do and could conquer anything from here on out.
He waited a few minutes for the pot to brew and poured himself a large cup, adding just two scoops of sugar. He was willing to bet demons probably hated sugar. It was good and sweet, bringing joy to most people. He smiled at the thought. He took his cup and sat down on his small bed and began to read through more of the book. He read through it for hours, sipping at his coffee and really enjoying it. He was a great person and soon he would rid this realm of all demons. Nothing could stop him now. Maybe he was the best choice to hunt demons. Perhaps he was a better and stronger person than he originally thought. He began to feel invincible and loved by all. He was a wonderful person anyone would be lucky to have him in their life.
He sat a moment thinking about life, reminding himself that he was the best employee, could run circles around his dimwitted coworkers, he had a great life and a hot girl willing to do anything for him. He was gods gift to the human race. As his ego began to swell, Neil decided he didn't need to read anything else, he was an intelligent and well educated man. He could figure these things out all on his own. He would drop them off to Jenna after another cup of coffee. He was sure she would be glad to have them back. Besides that, he was sure she would love the chance to see him again. After all he was going to save the human race all on his own, who else could make that claim? Probably no one else on this earth would be able to say that.
He sipped at his last fresh cup of dark roast before grabbing the books and leaving his standard sized apartment. He went down the two flights of stairs with ease, more than happy to get out of the apartment for a while. He went through the back door of the complex to his car parked a few feet away. Climbing in, he checked the mirror to make sure that he looked great as he usually did. He started the engine and headed out of the small parking lot. Jenna would be so glad to see him. Why wouldn't she be? He was a great guy and he knew it.
After a good fifteen minutes of clogged traffic he was a little annoyed. Foolish people. If they knew they were keeping the great demon fighter from his task, they wouldn't be so eager to sit in his way. If these people only knew that he was on his way to meet with his new girlfriend to keep these lowly human beings from becoming a demon's late night snack, they would all get out of his way and let him take care of these other worldly problems. Idiots, all of them. Each one of them should get down on their knees and thank the good lord that he had been born to save them from their possible damnation. He blew his horn for about thirty seconds. Then the traffic finally got moving again. It was aggravating being stuck in traffic three blocks from his destination.
He shook it off, knowing that he wouldn't have to wait much longer. He pulled his car around the corner and parked in the front of the building. The store was open but there weren't but a few cars parked near the book store. He found that kind of odd. Usually there had been more on any given day. He turned off the engine and grabbed the two large books. He had read enough. He was sick of reading about demons and minions, he was ready to get rid of a few. He wondered if he could just work some magic and call one to get the fight going. The thought made him grin with pride. He was tired of waiting for something dangerous to happen. He was more than ready to battle one or maybe three of them. Let them know he could kick them back to the underworld. He would be more than happy to take on all of them at once. He was the great demon warrior after all. Nothing could stop him.
He shut the door of his civic and strode up to the door of Merlin's Trunk. He didn't think that Jenna would mind one bit to see him, after all he was going to save her and she was going to love him for it. He opened the door to see Katie working the register. That girl seemed to live and breathe for this place just like her boss. He noticed she was almost always here.
"Hey Katie, good to see you." He greeted her in a cheerful tone.
"Mr. Harrison, nice to see you again too." She replied in a bright manner.
"Where is your boss? In the office again?" He asked in a direct tone.
"I think she might be, but she's really been busy today." She advised him.
"Oh that's okay she won't mind, after all it's me." He boasted.
"If you say so." She replied, giving him a puzzled look.
Neil walked with a skip in his step until he got to her office door. He could hear her on the phone talking to someone, but he walked right in anyway.
"Hey there you are." He spoke to her over the top of her phone call.
She looked up and quickly got off of the phone. She gave him a soft grin.
"What's going on?" She asked him.
"I thought that I'd bring your books back to you. " He replied.
"You read all of it in one night?" She asked with a hint of surprise in her sweet voice.
"I'm going to save the world, nothing can stop me. I don't need to read about it." He spoke in a sarcastic tone.
"Neil what's gotten into you? Did something happen?' She asked with more concern than normal.
"Not that I'm aware of, I'm going to be a hero, the human race will worship me." He replied.
"That doesn't sound like you at all." She looked at him as if he were insane.
"Perhaps I'm changing. I feel fine. In fact i feel on top of the world. Nothing can hurt me, I'm great." He replied to her.
"What happened to you last night?" She asked eyes wide with worry.
"I don't get what you mean. I'm going to save the world from demons, after that who knows?" He replied in a cocky tone.
"What did you do after you left here last night?" She asked, trying to figure out what had gotten into him. He never acted like this, not the entire time she had known him.
He thought for a moment of the night before. Then explained to her what had gone on.
"I left here with the books, made a quick meal. Then I read half of the first book before going to bed." He told her.
"Did you sleep well?" She asked, trying to figure out the complete spin around of his attitude.
"I think so, had a short nightmare about being the only person in this strange desolate land, it spooked me a little. Then when I woke this morning I felt great."
"This nightmare, did you have any kind of deep emotion, like anger or fear?' She asked him.
"Yes, I felt like I was going to have a heart attack in my sleep. It scared the hell out of me, but it was just a dream." He replied to her.
"I don't think it was just a dream. I think something happened to you."
