chapter 14

preparing the chosen one

She walked out of the office for a moment and returned with a few large books from her private collection and told him to open the first one.

"How will it help?" He asked confused.

"Trust me it will. If one of them has started to mess with you, who knows when the next one will surface. We need to prepare you for it."

"Okay, I'll do as you say." He replied, not having any other choice. He didn't just want to listen to her, he had to.

The two of them sat together in her office going over every demon in the book. He needed to be ready for the next attack. He knew that he could trust her judgement. He felt safe with her there, he could do this. He had no idea that demons really existed, let alone he of all people would battle them.

"I know this is a lot to take in, but trust me I will have you as ready for the next one as possible. Most of these demons feed on fear and paranoyia. Don't let them." She advised.

He nodded to her and gulped the coffee as he kept reading.

"How will I know when I'm under attack the next time?"

"You'll be ready for it. You must keep your guard up and trust no one. There's a reason you feel dizzy when they are near you. It's a warning from your soul that darkness is close."

He gave her a weak smile and kept reading over all the spells enchantments and battle tactics, looking up every so often when he didn't understand it, she explained it to him. This went on until it was time for her to close the book store for the night. He thanked her again, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek before saying goodbye and heading home for the evening.

He walked back to the parking lot behind his office building and unlocked the door of his honda. He was glad that he had such an intelligent and understanding woman in his life. When this was all over with, he would need to do something nice for her. Perhaps a weekend getaway? He wasn't sure. He'd think of something, that much he was sure of. He started the engine and pulled out of the lot. Heading back to his apartment, exhausted from the sloth attack. He knew he'd be in bed fairly early this time. He felt fine but the whole ordeal had really shaken him up. He knew the best thing for him was a light meal and a lot of rest.

He went to the nearly bare fridge and rummaged around. The wasn't much besides milk cheese and two slices of left over pizza. He checked the freezer and found one frozen chicken dinner. He grabbed it and opened the box, plopping it into the microwave. It wasn't a mouth watering meal but it would do just fine. He was beyond exhausted from all the research he had been doing. He had to keep going just in case something went wrong. He wanted to be ready. He never thought of himself as the brave heroic type, but he was up for the challenge.

As soon as his ancient microwave beeped repeatedly, he grabbed the dinner and sat down with the large book Jenna had told him to read. He found all sorts of intresting demons their names and what they could inflict on a mortal. He read about pain inflicting demons, nightmare demons, ones on anger and even demonic possesion. He looked over it several times, noticing that most don't posses people, it takes a lot of dark energy to do so.

He was relieved to know that, not wanting to worry his days and nights about demons taking over his body to cause people harm or even blood shed. He kept reading inbetween bites of chicken, corn and mashed potatoes. He read about demons causing mental problems, lower level demons trying to prove themselves to the higher ranking ones. By the time he got almost halfway through the book he could no longer focus. His vision began to blur. He set the book on the nightstand and crawled into bed like a zombie. It had taken him less than five minutes to find the comforts of sleep.
