chapter 9
Romerio spent the next several days with Syluss. He had a code to live by. If you change a mortal, you looked out for them, showed them how to survive before letting them fend for themselves. He had brought the demon-vampire back to his mansion for the first few days after the change. He had to talk the him into it. It was no easy task. He fought him about it until he had no strength left to fight with.
Over the next few days, Romerio did all that he could to help him adjust to the earthly plane of existence. Romerio showed a lot of patience with Syluss who's only thoughts were on Jayelle. He was going stir crazy with worry. What if her time was up? What if she was back home in the underworld? What if he had done this all of this for nothing? He refused to believe it. He could not bear the thought that he had done this for nothing. He refused to believe he would roam the earth for eternity without her.
He stayed with Romerio to ease the vampire, nothing more than that. He had asked the vampire a favor, a rather large favor. He wanted only to comply until he reached his Jayelle. He did whatever Romerio ask of him. He did whatever it would take to get on with it. He figured if he played nice with the vampire it would pay off better in the long run. In case he was too late. If his love had died in this life, he would know someone in this miserable existence. He was depressing himself. He knew he would need to keep the vampire as a close ally. His survival may depend on it.
After a few more nights, the vampire released him, wishing him luck. He nodded and thanked him for all of his help. He had even invited the demon-vampire to return sometime, even if he didn't find his mate, he still had a place to go. He appreciated that. Syluss just hoped he wouldn't need to use that invitation. He hugged Romerio goodbye before fleeing into the darkness. Romerio hoped that the demon vampire would be alright out there.
Humans were not brutal anymore, but they had gotten more intelligent over the last few centuries, he had noticed that much. He hoped that his new ally of darkness would not need his help. He could track other world creatures anytime he wanted, he felt this was information Syluss did not need to know.
He only told the demon vampire what he needed to know, nothing more. He left out anything that did not directly affect him. He had worked with demons before but not many of them. Not enough to trust any of them, not completely. He had kept things with Syluss on a need to know basis. If he didn't need to know it, Romerio did not tell him. He had not known if Syluss was telling him the truth or not. He had believed the demon, but he did not know for certain if he were up to no good.
Syluss had no idea how to start looking for her, he didn't know where she was born or exactly when. He knew this mission would be difficult. If he found her it would be well worth it all. Whenever he got discouraged here, he would remind himself of it. It was all for Jayelle which made it all worth every second on this forsaken existence. If he found her, that was all that mattered. He began to think for a moment. He was sure if he tried hard enough he could sense her. He tried several times and came up with nothing.
He forcefully kicked a tree stump, uprooting it from the ground with lightning forced speed. He was filled with a rage like he had never felt before. It was probably a vampire thing. He wasn't sure. He had not known of many demons that had become trapped inside a freshly turned vampire. It wasn't exactly like taking over a mortal. It was a lot different. It wasn't all that bad being trapped inside a supernatural body.
He did not care what happened to him as long as his soul mate was okay that was all that mattered to him. His love for her was all that mattered in this existence or any other. Her well-being was all he cared about. Even if she did not know who he really was, even if she hated him, it was fine as long as she was safe. He didn't care about the rest of his existence. He needed only to find her, but how? He kept asking himself over and over again, it was maddening to him.
He hunted through what cities he could in the darkness, and rested in caverns during the daylight hours. He spent weeks searching for her this way and getting nowhere very quickly. He left nothing but a trail of blood in his wake. He was not sick or twisted about it. He followed the same rules the vampire told him. We pray on the weak, the dying and average folks if we must. Never children. He did not understand what the deal was with not preying on children but so be it. He followed the vampire's rules; after all he had survived centuries here on earth without much trouble.
Over the next several nights, Syluss tried everything he could think of to find her; he came up with nothing each time. It was driving him insane, not knowing where she was, if she was still alive or not. These questions invaded his mind repeatedly, like a sickening virus. During the daylight hours he lay there in the dark comforting cave dwelling. He lay there worrying that he was doing nothing but wasting his time.
He was sure that fate was having a good laugh over this one. He was sure of that if nothing else. That night he went back to see Romerio. He hated to bother him again but he needed just a little push in the right direction. It had not been more than a few weeks since the turn. Romerio was more than surprised to see him, first thing that evening.
Romerio swung his large white mansion door open. He was puzzled seeing the demon vampire so soon. He feared the worst for his new acquaintance. Romerio hung his head low for a moment.
"What happened Sy? " The vampire asked out of genuine concern for the demon vampire.
"I can't find her; I don't know where to look." He spoke as if he were ashamed to have to ask for help.
"Get in here, I will do what I can, but no promises, got it?"
"Yes, of course. I owe you so much. How shall I repay you?" Syluss asked in a serious tone, as if his own life were hanging in the balance instead of his happiness.
"You can't repay me, and you sir are not going to try. You are now unfortunately in my debt and you are in need. That somehow makes you my friend."
Syluss was actually touched by the sentiment. He was even surprised by this. He was so glad he had found the vampire and the vampire did not seem to mind helping him out again. He simply nodded yes to the vampire, and waited to see what Romerio was going to do next. After a long pause, Romerio looked at the demon vampire.
"I will show you how to track a person's essence, with your mind."
"You can seriously do that?"
"Yes, I can." Romerio replied, trying not to laugh.
"What else can you do, or teach me to do?" Syluss reminded him of a teenager learning to do things on their own for the first time.
Romerio found it all to be rather entertaining. He liked to see the demon thinking of something other than being miserable without his soul mate. Romerio hoped that he could help Syluss. He didn't understand it but he felt compelled to help the poor thing out. He felt partly responsible for the demons entrapment in this world. He led Syluss to the basement; he called it the dungeon room. Syluss gave him a wicked smile over that one.
It was nice to have some kind of friend at least for now. He knew eventually he would be left with nothing but shadow less memory. They never stayed. Even immortals would find something bigger something better in another part of the world. It always worked out that way. They always left him. He was destined to be alone, to have people and creatures drift through his immortal existence.
It used to bother him, it made him feel like he were a black plague, to be avoided. It took him most of a century to make peace with it, and he had. He knew he was never going to have a normal life and it did not bother him anymore. He also liked meeting different creatures from time to time, depending on the circumstances. Once he had led Syluss to the basement of the mansion, he handed him several large books. Romerio began explaining inner power to him, how with discipline and determination he could sense where Jayelle had been reborn to.
Over the next several weeks Syluss fed and worked on harnessing this inner power. It was difficult for him at first. It frustrated him, he had so much riding on this, and he had to make it work. He refused to give up on her. He didn't just love her; she was a part of him. They were bonded together; worlds would not keep him from finding her. He kept at it using the smallest amount of light during the day, in the dungeon room. He stopped working only to eat, nothing more.
Romerio was glad to help, he really did not even know why. He checked on the demon vampire frequently. Syluss didn't mind so much after a while. Romerio did whatever he could to help. Once the demon- vampire was confident that he could find her this time he set off into the world again, with more than just hope at his side.
He roamed the cities at night, heading into the mountain areas, caves, occasionally and a sewer in a pinch. He started fresh the next evening. He used all the concentration he had within him, to try to find the right direction. The first time he ended up hurting himself trying to force it. He stopped, burying the fear of failure, burying the frustration deep within.
He closed his eyes and tried again. He felt something strange begin to stir. It was faint, barely there but it was something. He followed the strange feeling, running through different cities and forests until he needed to rest at day light. Each evening he repeated the ritual, sensing her essence and following it like a hell hound. Each dawn he found refuge wherever he could, and few when he could. He was going to find her one way or another.
