chapter 4
A few nights later Romerio was pacing through the large basement of his mansion, where he was most comfortable. That was where he kept his coffin and his favored objects. He had kept a few things from before the change. They would now be considered antiques. A hope chest, his small wooden desk. He continued to pace, stewing around in the basement. He was thinking, and getting nowhere. He was debating on rather or not to help the demon.
It was a bit confusing to him. He did not mind helping other creatures, even demons on occasion. It was just with Syluss something seemed a little off. He did not know if the demon was telling him the truth, or the whole truth. Why did Syluss want to possess a mortal? What business could he have on earth? Was Syluss starting a war? Romerio had more questions before he could possibly give the demon an answer. Romerio was not sure if he should help the underworld creature. Unlike most vampires, he liked to help other creatures from time to time.
He would expect payment for his assistance. He was not a greedy vampire. The most he would want is not to kill for his blood, but a small donation, never more than a pint. He was never over fed this way, but he did not starve. However Romerio had a deep aversion to demon blood. It did not agree with him, it made him ruthless and vindictive. He also noticed the last time; he had absolutely no control over himself, as if he were possessed by a true dark essence. The last time it was horrific, he began to remember.
There were bodies everywhere; it was a very dark time. The mortals called it the black plague. There was no such disease. It was Romero's possessive thirst that caused thousands of deaths across Europe. He had been in hiding. He took the first ship he could to the states. He could have transformed into a bat and flown, but this was a better way to travel. Transforming always wore him out. Then there was the flight.
He shook those memories back, he needed to concentrate. Demons were not known for their patience. He knew if he did not give some kind of an answer that Syluss would come to find him. When a demon was looking for something or someone, they did not stop until they found what they wanted, or who. He knew that in time, Syluss would find him. If he had to hunt for him, it was not going to be pleasant and Romerio knew that much.
