18. It's a small world...
My sackcloth at that point was no more than shreds. So I discarded it and put on my new borrowed clothes. My borrowed pants were too short and so was my new jacket. The T-shirt design wasn't exactly my taste, but I rather wear a shirt than nothing. As for shoes I got a pretty chewed out mountain boots. The 3 of us begin to head towards the street, the town was full of low squat buildings, with people here and there busying with their everyday lives.
"So how are you going to accumulate food then?" Iu asked.
"Simple, I am going to ask where the grocery store is." I replied.
I went up to a random man and asked:
"Where are the groceries?"
The man apparently doesn't understand English. He just stared at me in response.
"Food, where can I get food." I intimated eating sandwich, and the motion of savaging soup with a spoon.
"Food?"
"Yes."
The man pointed down to a direction then pointed and held 2 fingers, then pointed left.
I thanked the man as the 3 of us begin to set off in the pointed direction.
"I cannot understand your monkey language."
"Then it appears your intelligence is not even enough to comprehend monkey language. He meant 2 blocks in that direction, then turn left."
We walked in silence to the groceries, and before we entered I pulled them aside.
"So here's what we are going to do, Iu, you will hold my hand."
"No. I absolutely..."
"Just play along. I will be the father and Iris will be the mother. And we will just look like a normal tourist family buying some groceries, except we are not buying them."
"You are borrowing them." Iu said sarcastically.
"Precisely." I smirk snuggled up my face.
"How will this plan even work?"
"If you are willing to cooperate then it will work. Iris?" I turned my attention to Iris.
"..." she stared at me with a poker face.
"Once we get inside I want you to...spin circles! Like this." I spun in circles several times, it probably looks stupid, but it wasn't me doing it for real.
"Got it?"
"..." Iris began to spinning in circles.
"Well don't spin yet, you can do that once we get inside...Now hand Iu."
She reluctantly gave me her hand and when our hands connected, she gave it a squeeze that caused thousands jolts of pain to run through my body. I let go my hands at once and shook it, to get rid of the numbing pain.
"You try something like this again, I will make you wish you were never born." Iu snapped and offered its hand again.
"I was just about to compliment you. What a helpful demon you are, I guess not."
"I don't need compliments from a psycho."
"Iu?"
"What?"
"Give you other hand to Iris." I said as I watched Iu give her hand to Iris with ease.
"Remember we are a happy family and what all matters is that we look like one." I grinned.
"Go to hell." Iu replied.
The 3 of us stepped inside the store, it was a small space, with just a few rows of goods. The shopkeeper was a middle age man who sat lazily at the counter reading some questionable magazine. I looked around closer one more time, there is no monitor nor any scanner.
Perfect.
I grinned, as I leaned forward to Iris and whispered in her ear:
"You can spin now Isa." She let go of Iu and she begin to spin right in front of the shopkeeper. While the shop keeper stared at her in bewilderment, I pulled Iu into the back isle and said:
"Ok, grab as many canned good as possible. I will grab the daily necessities."
"How do you plan to hide them?"
"Hide it under your clothes, and look as casual as possible."
"What happens if you are caught?"
"Plan B."
"And what is that?"
"We will just knock him out for good."
"What do you mean by we? This is your plan."
"Shut the hell up and do as I say." I said, as I stuffed a pack of toothpaste into my jacket and realized the box was really bulging out.
"Damn, this is no good."
"You will obviously get caught." Iu commented.
"A rhetorical question. I guess its plan B."
"You are on your own."
"Just sit and watch useless demon." I said, as I walked up to counter and saw Iris still spinning. When the shopkeeper saw me, he stood up at once.
"Why is she spinning?" He spoke with a heavily accented English.
"Uh...I will tell you if you come closer, it's embarrassing to tell."
The shopkeeper reluctantly leaned forward. Just as I was going to put him out cold for good the sound of roaring engine came, followed by a series of scream. Quickly the shopkeeper ran out from his counter, closed the door and locked it.
"What was that?"
"It's them, the O Sacrifico. They come once in a while and pick people off the streets. It's best to stay away."
At the mention of the cult name I bit down on my lip, and clutched my fist at my side so hard my muscles were turning purple.
"Sir? Is there something I can help with?" asked the shopkeeper.
"Do you have any sort of...knife or gun?"
"I don't have a gun, the best I got is a kitchen knife...what are you planning to do?"
"I need it for very short second. I promise you I will return it really quick, real quick."
"No! I don't want any trouble...I am sorry, I don't want any trouble."
"Tell us where the knife is."
"I said I don't want any trouble!"
"I am sorry then." I said apologetically.
"I am..." before the man could get another word out of his mouth, my hand went to the pressure point behind his ear and pressed it down as hard as possible. The man fell paralyzed.
"Iu, help me find anything I could use as a weapon."
"It's better to wait till night."
"I am afraid that's impossible."
"...Very well then." Iu nodded. Then she disappeared into the back of the store. A moment later she reappeared with a butcher's knife.
"Even better than a kitchen knife." I took the blade from Iu by the handle.
"Are you going to do this alone?" Iu asked.
"To be precise we are doing this together. Come on." I signaled them to follow me. I caught sight of a trio of cultists loading people onto the back of a truck. The cultists looked exactly as I remembered. Long red robes that hid their faces in shadows. When the trio saw us, they immediately stopped talking. And the one with the rifle walked up to us:
"You speak English?" he said with a deep accented English.
"Yes." I said keeping a firm grip on the knife I had hidden behind my back.
"You seem lost, we can help you find way."
"That will be very helpful."
One of the trio members called out to him, and whatever message it was, it seemed to be getting through:
"Hey! What is behind your back!?" the rifle guy demanded.
"Just a little present."
The men looked at each other and burst out laughing.
"A present? For me?"
"You can come see for yourself." As soon as I said it, the rifle guy grew interested and approached me eagerly.
"So where is present?" he asked.
"This." My knife struck out like a viper, as I it buried its steel fang deep inside the man's throat. He let out a hoarse scream. It was a terrible pitch so I compensated by humming as I twisted my blade once, then twice. The men bore looks of absolute shock and the one I stabbed fell backwards and pulling free of my knife. His colleagues just stood there wide eyed. And giving them no time to react, I threw my knife towards the 2nd man. Then the last cultist slumped to the ground, his eyes full of fear, and I liked that.
"Keys." I asked.
"Please don't kill me! I am just a victim!"
"Last chance, do you want a knife in your head?" I said, as I toyed with the knife I had retrieved.
The man began to fumble in his robes desperately, just as my patience was wearing out, he produced a ring of keys. He held it out shakily and I took them from him with pleasure.
"Good news, we are not going to kill you." I said.
"Thank you, thank you!" the man was literally crawling to my feet and kissing my shoes, I find it disgusting so I pressed his face into the ground with my foot.
"We will let your hostages decide what to do with you. Iu free the hostages." I tossed her the keys.
"Please do not do this to me good sir! Merciful lord please!"
"I am being merciful." I spat on him before I turning away.
A moment later the hostages were freed from the back of the truck, as they gathered around their captor. And they sure as hell looked unhappy.
"Do what you want with him, but I am taking the truck. Come on ladies, get in here." I signaled Iris to come. Who seemed to get my message, but did so slowly. Once all 3 of us, were in the truck. Iu passed me the keys and I began to try it out one by one, and eventually one of them got the engine roaring.
"I don't suppose you know how to drive this? Am I right?" I turned to face Iu.
"I admit for once, I don't."
"What do you mean by once? You useless demon."
"Very well, let the psycho drive."
I had a feeling that this was going to be a very long trip...
Q: What would you do if you ran into a cult?
