chapter 25

Ariel continued to comfort Grey as he cried and Grey held onto his soulmate as if his existence relied on it.

His cries quickly mellowed down, and he drifted off to sleep.

Ariel sighed softly as she watched her soulmate sleep.

"I was certainly not expecting this. He looks so heartbroken," Ariel whispered to herself as she quickly placed a kiss on his forehead before she left the bedroom and headed downstairs.

When she entered the living room, she noticed Anna was still talking with her father.

Anna's eyes shifted from Raguel to Ariel when she sensed her presence.

"How is he?" Anna asked.

"He is not coping well," Ariel answered. "But he is asleep now," she added.

Anna nodded her head. She was looking tired. Her eyes were swollen from crying. Ariel felt sorry for her. She could only imagine the pain Anna was going through.

"Why don't you go upstairs and take a nap?" Elena suggested.

"No, I cannot sleep right now," Anna said. “I need to talk to my son," she added.

"This is what I feared would happen and this is why I did not tell him before. I will have to wait until he wakes up to explain to him that it's not his fault," Anna said.

"Do you think Steven's brother will come after Grey and Ariel?" Raguel asked

"Yes, he will come,” Anna said. “But I will get an epiphany before something happens," Anna said weakly.

"What do you mean?" Raguel asked.

"Don't worry. I will tell you everything soon," Anna said.

Raguel nodded his head, trusting her words.

Anna and Raguel continued discussing. However, Ariel zoned out of their conversation as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath before she felt someone by her side.

She opened her eyes and saw her mother.

"Hey, are you alright?" Elena asked.

"How can I be when my soulmate is not alright?" Ariel asked back.

Elena nodded her head. "I understand,” she said. “You need to be strong for him and do not let him push you away.”

Ariel nodded her head as Elena kissed her daughter before she left the living room.

Ariel stayed in the living room for some more time before she stood up and went to her room.

When she entered, she saw Grey whimpering in his sleep.

Ariel moved closer to her soulmate to hear what he was saying.

"Please..."

"Don't leave me..."

"Please..."

Grey continued whispering those same words. Ariel moved closer to her soulmate and wrapped her arms around him.

"Hey, wake up," she said softly.

Grey was still restless in her arms. He continued whispering those words.

"Nobody is leaving you," Ariel said softly. "Wake up now,", she said with a little pressure on his shoulders, making Grey snap his eyes open quickly and jump out of the bed, pushing Ariel out of the bed too.

Grey looked around the room until his eyes landed on his soulmate who was getting up from the floor.

"Are you alright?" he asked quickly.

"I'm fine," Ariel reassured

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to push you," Grey said regretfully.

"It's okay. I know that," Ariel said

"But..."

"I know, Grey," Ariel repeated.

She moved closer to him and led him back to the mattress as she wrapped her arms around him.

"I'm sorry, Ariel," Grey said.

"Stop apologizing, Grey," Ariel said.

Grey listened to her as he rested his head on her shoulder.

After a minute Ariel spoke up. "What were you dreaming about?" she asked.

Grey shook his head. He was not in a position to shape a sentence.

"It's okay. Just tell me," Ariel said.

"Everybody left,” he whispered. “I had no one," he added.

Ariel did not need to ask any more questions because she was aware of what Grey was talking about.

"Nobody is leaving you," Ariel stated sternly, making Grey nod his head.

"Do you still love me?" Grey blurted out.

Grey was feeling vulnerable. He knew it in his heart that Ariel loved him but he just wanted to hear her say it. He needed to hear those words from her mouth.

Ariel sat up straight and looked at Grey. "Why would you ask that?" she questioned.

Grey shrugged.

Ariel cupped his face gently. "Don't ever doubt my love for you. Nothing can ever change the way I feel about you."

"I love you," Ariel said.

"I love you too," Grey said, feeling very relieved.

Ariel kissed him softly. "Never doubt that again," she said as she kissed him before she separated her lips from his.

"Your Mom needs to speak to you," Ariel said.

"Really?" Grey asked.

"Yes. I will go call her," Ariel said, standing up from the mattress as she made her way downstairs.

"He is up," Ariel announced.

Anna straightaway stood up from the sofa and headed to her son's room. She knocked on the door and entered the room when her son responded.

"Hey," she said softly as she sat closer to her son. "How are you feeling?" She asked.

"I do not know," Grey answered truthfully.

"Are you angry with me for keeping this from you?" Anna asked.

"I don't know, Mom,” Grey answered. “Had you told me earlier, I do not think I would have been able to handle it then," he said in a murmur. "How did you live with it, Mom?" Grey asked. "The pain, the sufferings, and everything you had to go through," Grey added.

"I had you,” Anna replied softly. “You made me want to live," she said.

"I'm so sorry, Mom," Grey whispered.

"There is nothing to be sorry about, son," Anna countered.

"But it's..."

"It's not your fault, Grey. Don't blame yourself for what your father did. You are not him," she said sternly. “You are not him," she repeated.

Grey nodded his head and Anna pulled him into a hug. She felt satisfied when her son didn’t resist her.

"I love you, son," Anna said.

"I love you too," Grey responded as he hugged his mother tightly.

"Thank you for not giving up on me," Grey said.

"Never,” Anna said. “You are my son and I will never give up on you."

Grey smiled softly as he continued to hug his mother. They each stayed like that for a while before Anna pulled back.

"Let's go downstairs," Anna said.

"Okay."

They left the room and went downstairs.

Ariel smiled when she saw her soulmate and walked up to him.

"You look better now," she said.

Grey smiled at her and kissed her.

"Do you want to go out?" Ariel asked.

"Where to?" Grey questioned curiously.

"Follow me," Ariel ordered.

"Okay."

"Mom, we will be back," Ariel announced before she left the house and flashed her wings. Both vanished in thin air.

                        ***

Grey looked around. "This is where we first met," he said.

Ariel nodded her head. "I remember we tried to kill each other here," she said, laughing.

Grey guffawed hard. "I remember when you made the first move, and I was shocked by your strength. I didn't think you would be able to throw a punch like that."

"I was taught well by my father and Uncle," she said.

"They taught you well," Grey concurred.

Grey held Ariel's hand as they walked around the field.

"Steven was an awful man. He caused a lot of pain to my Mom and even my Uncle is not left out in all this," Grey said. He was not able to refer to Steven as his father, not after knowing what he did. "He does not deserve the title," Grey whispered. "My Uncle simply used me for his own benefits," he muttered.

Ariel squeezed his hand tightly. "I'm happy you are no longer in the demon’s zone.”

"Me too," Grey said. "My life is easy with you in it," Grey added lovingly. “I love you so much," he said with a lovely smile on his face.

"I love you too," Ariel said as she kissed him gently.

They continued their stroll around the field in silence for a while before they finally went home.
