Final Chapter
"Pull over here. I need you to get me some coffee," Vincent instructed Holly who was driving him from the hospital.
"Are you sure it's okay just to leave like that?" Holly asked. "I didn't think they'd let you leave."
"I signed a release that if anything happens, the hospital wasn't liable for it. Now get me some coffee dammit."
"You sure do like your coffee," Ian said from the backseat. He caught eyes with Holly in the rearview mirror and winked at her.
Vincent ignored him as Holly pulled into a local café. "Did you want the usual sir?"
"Yes and get Mr. Crawford back there the same."
"Actually," Ian interjected. "I'd like a peach tea please."
"Okay. I'll be right back." Holly ran inside the café and Vincent turned to Ian.
"What's your deal boy?"
"Excuse me?" Ian asked, not sure where Vincent was going with this.
"I made her get some coffee so I can talk to you alone. Why are you all of a sudden chasing after Holly like a dog in heat? She's not exactly the type you associate with," Vincent's eyebrows narrowed together. "You and I aren't exactly friends so why tag along?"
"I like Holly. She's sweet. As for you...no, we aren't friends. Still, you fascinate me. From an actor's point of view I like to know what makes you tick."
Vincent chuckled, "You expect me to believe that?"
"It's the truth."
"I've seen the trash mags with you and girls like Lauren Bolgers. All of a sudden you're chasing a mouse like Holly. I think you're trying to get closer to me...the question is why."
It was Ian's turn to laugh, "You really are an arrogant man. The rumors about you are true. I have actually thought of leaving sooner than later. How would you feel if I took Holly with me?"
"As a personal assistant?" Vincent shrugged. "Everyone's replaceable."
"You can't possibly mean that. You're a father. What about your children? You can't possibly think they're replaceable?"
Vincent leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes, "Like I said...everyone is replaceable."
Ian didn't respond to Vincent's reply but sat quietly in the backseat until they saw Holly coming towards the car. She was on her cellphone and she disconnected the call before getting inside.
"That took forever," Vincent muttered and took his coffee from her.
"Sorry, the lines were long." She passed Ian his tea and looked at Vincent, "Do we go to your house Mr. McDaniels?"
"Yes, but not my apartment...my home."
"The one in the woods?" she asked, her voice filled with surprise.
Vincent took a sip of his coffee and began thinking of what his next step would be. He hadn't been out to his old house in weeks. He was in no condition to fight anyone so if he had to go face to face with Christopher, he would need a gun. The last time he visited his old house, he stocked it with weapons just in case he needed it. If he had to, he could use Holly and Ian as a distraction. If they died in the line of fire...so be it. He didn't trust Ian. Was his excuse of wanting to study him really legitimate? Holly was still waiting for an answer and Vincent sighed, "Yes, the one in the woods. It looks like some family members want to come calling."
They drove to Vincent's old home and Holly drove down the gravel driveway that led to the back of the house, "Do you two want to get off in front? I'll meet you both inside."
Ian yawned and Vincent groaned, "The pain medicine is really kicking in. Yeah, drop me off here."
Both men got off of the car and walked into the house while Holly parked in the back. As she walked to the front of the house, she thought she heard someone to her left. She stopped and slowly looked around her. She didn't see anyone and took a deep breath. She stepped inside the home, "It's just me."
She was surprised that no one responded until she saw both Vincent and Ian laid out on the floor. She jumped as a voice behind her whispered, "Now look what the cat drug in."
~6:30 PM~
"Eva, are you sure we should be doing this?" Jacob asked from the passenger side of his car.
"I told you not to come Jacob. I know you don't agree and think it's stupid but this could be the story of a lifetime. Besides, I'm not going to get in the way," Eva shrugged. "Good reporters don't win Pulitzers by sitting on the sidelines."
"I only came along to make sure you didn't do anything stupid. I guess that's too late since coming here is beyond stupid. When the FBI finds out you're here they're gonna be pissed."
"It'll be too late then." Eva glanced quickly at Jacob, "Aren't you curious? What he'll admit to? Whether you like to admit it or not...he's still your father."
Jacob scoffed at that remark, "He's not my father just like David Wilson isn't my brother."
"Jacob, when all this said and done...you and he are going to have to get along. You're both important to me."
"I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you, Eva. How can you trust him?"
Eva gave a slight smiled, "I just do."
After they arrived close to the residence, Eva parked at a nearby motel. "We'll park the car here and walk over to the house."
"Aren't you afraid Sally will see you?" Jacob asked.
Eva shook her head, "No. Back at the house she said she would park a few blocks away from the house. David said he would be going in alone."
"You aren't worried about him?" Jacob asked. "He's going in alone with a possible killer."
"David was a detective. He knows how to take care of himself," Eva answered.
Eva and Jacob ran across the highway and walked towards Vincent's old home. "We have to stay hidden okay?" Eva whispered to Jacob who nodded. It was getting dark. They hid behind a group of trees. "If we can get close enough to the house, we should be okay."
Eva turned her back to Jacob and looked past the tree she was behind and towards the house. She heard Jacob grunt behind her and quickly turned around to see the back of a gun coming down on her. Before she was knocked out, she heard someone whisper, "Don't worry. This is for your own good."
~7:00 PM~
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Special Agent Sally Roux asked former detective David Wilson.
"Believe it or not, I am trained to handle myself out in the field. I can surely handle Vincent McDaniels," David said as he holstered a gun to himself.
"I don't know Roux. This seems pretty risky to me. You sure you don't want to bring back-up?" Donald Ferguson, her partner, asked.
"It's not too late for you to back out Ferguson. You know I can't ask the Director for back-up. Last time I mentioned Vincent McDaniels to him, I nearly got my head bit off. It's okay if you want out," Sally told him.
Donald sighed, "No, you're my partner. If you think he's the guy...then he's the guy."
They were driving in an unmarked van to the house in the woods and David was checking the listening device he had hidden on him.
"We'll be in the van up the road listening in," Sally reminded him. "Just get him to incriminate himself and get out. Got it?"
"I got it," David muttered.
"We have to be ready for any surprises they throw at us," Sally reminded both Donald and David.
They pulled over and let David exit the van. "We'll be ahead just a few miles," Sally reminded him.
David walked towards the home and could see the lights from inside. A single figure was moving inside. Was that Vincent?
He stepped towards the house and slowly walked up the porch, his hand hovering over his pistol.
He knocked on the door and was surprised by what he saw.
"Eva!" David cried, running forward. Before he could get to her, he was hit over the head with a glass vase.
~Meanwhile~
"What the hell was that? Turn the van around Ferguson. Let's get back there now!"
Donald listened to Sally and parked on the side of the highway close to Vincent's old house. "Why was Eva there?"
"Because she's an idiot," Sally muttered. "What was she doing there?"
As both agents exited the car, they slowly approached the house and stopped short when they saw a group of men surrounding the house.
"Who the hell are they?" Donald asked.
"That's a good question. If I had to take a guess, I'd say they're the Demon King's disciples."
Donald swore, "Well no matter what happens Roux, I've got your back."
She looked at Donald and nodded.
"FBI Freeze!" Donald shouted and when the men continued approaching he cursed again. "I guess we're going to have to duke it out Roux. They're unarmed."
"I'm ready," she muttered as she put her gun away and blocked a punch from an attacker.
Inside the Home of Vincent McDaniels
The sound of the Archies song Sugar Sugar filled the air. David opened his eyes and groaned, "Who the hell are you?" In front of him was Vincent McDaniels tied up and gagged. Directly behind him, with a knife in hand was a dark-haired woman.
"You don't know me? I'm hurt brother dear," the woman said in a mocking voice.
"Brother?" David asked in surprise. He looked to his right and saw Eva, Jacob, and another young man he recognized from a movie he watched a few years ago. All of them were tied to a chair.
The woman held the tip of the knife into Vincent's forehead, "Hello father. Did you miss me?"
Vincent murmured something incomprehensible through his gag.
"I wish I could understand you. Speak clearly!" she yelled as she struck him in the back of his head.
"Holly?" Ian asked. "Why are you doing this? What did you do to me? The coffee-"
"Yes, the coffee. I'm afraid I drugged it Ian. You and father dearest never saw it coming, did you?" she said in a sugary voice.
"You keep calling him father. Who are you? Another one of his illegitimate children?" Eva asked.
"Illegitimate?" Holly threw her head back and slowly made a cut down Vincent's cheek. "No Eva dear, the blood that runs through his veins runs through mine and he was married to my mother when he had me. I'm anything but illegitimate." She turned down the music and smiled, "I can hear them fighting outside. It sounds like the FBI is coming face to face with the Demon King's disciples. I have you to thank for that Eva. That nickname made me popular and let's be honest...who doesn't need some minions now and again?"
"Are you Beatrice?" Eva asked. As far as she knew, Vincent only had one daughter.
"What the hell?" David muttered. He thought Beatrice was dead.
"Beatrice?" Holly asked. "Beatrice? Are you kidding? How could I possibly be the girl I killed years ago?"
"Tom?" Eva asked.
"Well this is embarrassing. I did such a good job of framing Tom, that you really think it's him. No...not Tom. But you're getting warmer. Shall I tell you a little story? A sort of way to kick off this family reunion?"
"You're fucking crazy," David retorted.
"Perhaps you're right brother dear. Perhaps you're right. But can you blame me? Years ago I was abandoned by my father to live with my uncle. Can you imagine? I mean what kind of father forces his child to live with an abusive drunk? Huh?"
"Don't tell me...Christopher?" David asked in disbelief.
Holly continued, "I only got to see my father when he wanted to go hunting and even then...it wasn't quality time with just me and him. No. He had to invite Tom and all of our friends. After everything I did to get him to myself. Do you know how hard it was to frame Tom for Beatrice's murder?"
"Oh my God," Eva gasped.
"I was so sick of seeing him coddle Beatrice and Tom. What was I? Invisible? I wanted attention too! I needed my father! After stabbing her and leaving her in the woods I thought I'd finally get him to myself. But you know what this man did? He sent me to live with my uncle Roger. Good old Uncle Roger...who always had a drink in one hand and a belt in the other."
"You killed Beatrice?" Eva whispered and looked at Vincent, who appeared shocked.
"Yeah I killed her. Then I laid her out like some kind of angel. I even made sure that crown of flowers stayed on her head. Wasn't that nice of me?"
"Why did you frame Tom?" Eva asked.
"So that he would get shipped off! But did it work that way? Hell no it didn't. I was stuck with Uncle Roger and I had to suffer knowing that Tom was getting to live it up. "
"You're the real Demon King," David whispered. "We thought it was Vincent...but it's you."
"Vincent? Don't make me laugh." Holly walked over to a nearby table where there was a plastic gallon container of clear liquid. Next to it were three lit candles. She picked up the gallon of clear liquid and opened it. David could smell it was gasoline.
Eva thought about her conversations with Sally and spoke up, "Chad Harris was the man that had plastic surgery to look like David. He was the one that was shot. He's the Demon King."
"Chad...poor Chad. He was in love with me. He did everything I said. His parents didn't want him to be gay but Chad...well you could call him my first disciple," Holly smirked.
"You're telling us you're Christopher. But he died in a fire," David said.
"Wrong! I planned that fire. If Christopher McDaniels was dead then I could do as I pleased. I could finally get my revenge. I placed a different body there in place of mine. No autopsy was done to verify it was me."
"How? How did you pull that off?" Eva asked.
"Well that's easy. Chad Harris paid them off. It all worked out in his favor. He was in love with me but his parents didn't want him to date a man."
"Whose body was it in that fire?" David asked.
"And you call yourself a detective. Haven't you figured it out yet? The body burnt in that fire belonged to Holly Baker."
David cursed, "So he paid to have you changed to a female?"
Holly laughed, "No. I told you he was gay. He did pay for my face and chest though."
"You're a monster," Eva said in disgust.
"Now that's not very PC Eva," Holly began pouring the container filled with gasoline over Vincent who was struggling against his ropes and screaming through his gag. "Vincent, did you know that I had Chad approach you as an old friend of mine? I know you think that framing Tom as a serial killer was your idea but it actually came from me feeding it to Chad to feed to you. And like a little birdy, you ate it up."
"Why did he get the plastic surgery to look like me?" David asked.
"That was a precaution we took. If he was caught, we could frame the real David Wilson. If not, then we'd change his face again. It's a good thing we did too. Before Tom could be found guilty, he was killed by Chad. Chad was supposed to kill Vincent and frame Tom. The plan was to take Vincent's book Raising the Demon King and claim it as his own under a different title."
"What did I do?" David asked not understanding. "What did I do to get caught up in your plan?"
Holly cocked her head to one side and answered, "You were born."
"Holly if this is some kind of sick joke, I suggest you stop now," Ian pleaded.
"Holly if this is some kind of sick joke," Holly mocked. "Shut up! You think I don't know what you really think of me? Half man...half woman. You think I don't know? You're just like Vincent. Vain, overconfident, and too self-evolved. You probably don't care about anyone but yourself."
Before Ian could speak, David chuckled. "Is this the best you can do? Tie us all up? Murder us? And for what? Because you hate Vincent McDaniels? He was a bad father? Boo hoo. Get over it."
"Oh I will get over it. As soon as I take care of some business here."
"Stop this," Jacob cried. "Let us go."
"I'm sorry but I can't do that Jacob," Holly smiled. "You see, you four are going to be Vincent's jury. I'm going to let you decide how he dies." Holly turned to Vincent and loudly declared, "Vincent McDaniels you are a murderer, an adulterer, a selfish man, a man that abandoned his family, and a man that has no compassion. You helped Chad Harris murder women and framed your own son to do so. I find you guilty of these charges."
Holly smirked and turned to Vincent, "I'm a fair person. I'll let you say something on your own behalf."
She removed Vincent's gag and he spit on her face. "You were and always have been a disappointment. You think I care if you're a man or a woman? I don't. I don't care about you one-"
Holly slapped him and shoved the gag back into an angry Vincent's mouth. "Like I said, you're guilty."
Holly turned to Eva, "Do you find him guilty?"
Eva refused to answer. As much as she hated Vincent McDaniels, she didn't want to be a part of this person's plan.
Holly held her knife and placed it on David's neck, "Answer the question Eva. Or do you want me to slit your baby daddy's neck open?"
Eva had no choice, "Guilty."
Holly smiled, "Good girl. Now it's your turn Jacob."
Jacob looked away but answered, "Guilty."
"Ian?" Holly asked.
"This has nothing to do with me!" Ian shouted.
"Answer the question Ian!"
"Fine! He's guilty...just let us go!" Ian began whimpering.
Holly shook her head in disgust, "Pathetic."
Before she could ask, David answered, "Guilty. Just like you...he's guilty."
Holly turned back to Vincent, "The jury has spoken. Now you must die." The smell of gasoline was strong as she poured the rest of the liquid around the room. She took a box of matches. "Unfortunately all of you will have to die now. It's a shame. I really wanted Eva to have her exclusive. It would've been nice for the world to know who the real Demon King is.
The sound of sirens filled the air and Holly ran to the window to see what was going on. "Well it looks as though the Calvary has arrived."
The door burst open and Sally entered, gun drawn. "FBI. I want to see your hands in the air."
Holly raised her hands and stepped closer to the table that was by Vincent. A few officers ran in and began untying the hostages, with the exception of Vincent. He was too close to Holly.
"I see you called backup," Holly observed.
"Yeah well after my partner and I got through your men, we decided to bring in our own. I'll admit I'm surprised. I never expected a woman to be our serial killer," Sally admitted. She had a split lip and it was obvious a black eye was forming on her left eye. She could smell gasoline.
"Getting those men here was easy. I told them the Demon King was calling them," Holly admitted.
"And they believed that crap?"
"Well a bribe to each one of them also helped," Holly whispered, "Why didn't you take what I offered? I gave you a perfect way to frame Vincent and you didn't use it."
"Are you talking about the vials of blood?"
Holly nodded, taking another step towards the table, "We could've framed him and spared some lives."
"Sorry, I don't work that way," Sally said. "No matter how much I hate McDaniels, I'm not willing to compromise the law."
"Is that so?"
"Yes, now I'm going to get closer and cuff you."
"You won't bend the laws to incriminate him so I wonder if you'll sacrifice your life to save him," Holly pushed her hips forward, knocking the three lit candles over. The flames quickly spread as Holly had spread gasoline all over the room. Sally could hear Vincent screaming in pain as he was engulfed in flames. Holly was laughing, "You said I'm not important! I'm the cause of your death! How is that not important?"
The flames were lapping up the furniture and licking at the walls. Sally knew she wouldn't be able to save Vincent or Holly who was taking some sick pleasure in dying with Vincent McDaniels. She ran out of the small house just as the ceiling began to topple.
"Sally!" Eva cried. "Are you okay?"
Sally looked back at the ball of fire and sighed, "Is it really over?"
"Did you see them die?" Eva asked.
"I watched them burn," Sally whispered.
"Then it's over. It has to be."
1 Year Later
"Is this the last of them?" David asked Eva who was holding JD in the living room of their new house. He placed the box down and stretched.
"I'm not sure. It should be. Did you check the backseat?"
"No but I will now," David sighed. He and Eva had finally left Texas. At first he had suggested they leave Ludwig but that wasn't good enough for Eva. She wanted a fresh start far away from the Demon King and his disciples.
"Hey you guys forgot a box in the backseat!" Jacob yelled as he joined them in the living room. He had finally graduated from college and decided to pursue his Master's degree in a different state. Eva, David, and JD were the only family he had left so he didn't want to be away from them.
"Thanks Jacob. I missed that one," David smiled at Jacob who smiled back. Their relationship still had awkward moments but over the past year it had been growing. After Jacob learned the truth about everything, he began to accept the fact that perhaps David wasn't one of Vincent or Christopher's pawns.
"No problem. I'm going to go ahead and start decorating my room," Jacob ran up the stairs, leaving David and Eva alone.
"It's weird, right?" Eva asked him.
"What's weird? The house?" David asked.
She shook her head, "No. Everything's so different than it was a year ago."
David wrapped an arm around her, "Yeah but that's a good thing. There are no more crazy serial killers after us and my name is finally cleared."
Eva smiled, "You have Special Agent Roux to thank for that."
"Yeah. She's pretty kick-ass. I heard she was taking some time off."
Eva nodded, "I may not get to call her Special Agent anymore. She told me she wants to start writing detective novels."
David laughed, "Yeah right. She's law enforcement to the core. She'd never give up her badge. Still, I think it's good for her to take some time off. Three cases involving the Demon King would be more than enough for anyone."
Eva handed David their son and began unpacking a scrapbook of her old newspaper articles. She opened it up and saw the headline, "The Truth About Tom McDaniels."
David looked over her shoulder, "It was a good thing you did. Exposing the truth about Vincent and Christopher and then letting everyone know Tom was innocent. You did well."
Eva smiled, "I'm glad it's over. I still don't know who was worse. Vincent or Christopher."
David shrugged, "I'm sure they're fighting over that title in Hell." He placed JD in his playpen and walked over to Eva who was sitting on the sofa. He grabbed her hand and asked, "What's wrong with your fingers?"
"My fingers?"
"Yeah they look strange," David said pulling her left hand closer.
"How do they look weird?"
"Well it's just this one," he said as he slipped a diamond ring on it. "It's missing something."
Eva gasped as she realized what David was up to.
"Eva, I love you. I wanted to wait until we were officially moved in. Will you marry me?"
Eva felt the tears of happiness fall down her cheeks, "Of course I will." She felt the warmth of David's embrace as he whispered in her ear, "Make me a promise Eva."
"Anything."
"Promise me that we'll always be together and that we'll make sure JD and any other kids we have feel loved."
Eva knew David hadn't come from a traditional home. She nodded, "Of course. And I'll make another promise too."
"What's that?"
"I'm going to be happy and live my life to the fullest for Joelynn, Jacob's mother, Tom, Beatrice, and all the other innocent victims of Christopher and Vincent."
David hugged Eva even tighter, "That sounds like an excellent idea." Together David knew that they would live the rest of their lives in happiness for themselves and to honor their lost loved ones.
