Chapter 23
Vincent gasped as the bullet pierced his flesh. David took a step back, still holding the gun. The sound of the sirens had stopped.
"FBI!"
David turned at the sound of a woman's voice yelling. He couldn't see them entering as he and Vincent were hidden behind some old shelves. David leaned into Vincent, "If you tell anyone I shot you, your book will be ruined."
Vincent lay on the ground, clutching his the side of his stomach where he had been shot. "You won't get away with this."
David looked back as the sound of the approaching officers got closer. He looked back at Vincent, "It's been fun. We should do this again." He gave Vincent a look of contempt before running out the back of the warehouse.
"We have a body!" a male's voice shouted.
Vincent didn't know if he should follow David or wait for them to find him. He was bleeding profusely. "Over here!" he shouted.
He could hear the sound of footsteps approaching.
"I'm over here dammit!" he groaned as the effort to yell took a toll on him.
"Well who do we have here?"
Vincent looked up to see Special Agent Sally Roux staring down at him, her gun drawn.
"Call an ambulance," Vincent ordered as he continued to lay on the ground.
Sally made the call then asked Vincent, "Who shot you?"
"Can't you give me a second to bleed?"
Sally continued, "If you don't tell me I can't catch him."
Vincent thought about what David had said. If he were to claim that his son David Wilson shot him, would he be believed? More importantly, what would that do to his book sales? That would make his entire book that stated David Wilson was the now deceased Demon King a total lie. He coughed and answered, "I...I didn't see him. I'm not going to talk about it until I've been treated."
Sally's eyes narrowed as she considered his answer. She waited for the paramedics to come and help him before joining her partner, Donald Ferguson.
"Are they still trying to track the anonymous tip?" Donald asked her.
"I guess so. I haven't heard any updates. They think the caller might have used a burner phone." She looked at the body of the woman and the words written above it. "Got any idea what that's supposed to mean?"
"That her death is supposed to remind someone of somebody else's death? She's wearing a flower crown. Maybe it's the Demon King's son," Donald suggested.
"This all points towards Vincent McDaniels again."
"I saw him being carried out. What was he doing here?"
"He hasn't been questioned yet. I'm going to wait for him to arrive at the hospital and get treated," Sally answered. "A squad car is following the ambulance and the officers are going to stay with Vincent until he's been stitched up."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Donald asked.
"Why?"
"You always talk as though Vincent is some kind of evil villain. What if he escapes?"
Sally smirked, "You're right Ferguson. How about you go and wait to interview him?"
Donald smiled, "I do love to interview witnesses." It was in inside-joke between the two of them that Donald loved to make witnesses cry or wet themselves.
"This is just an interview not an interrogation," Sally reminded him.
Donald was beginning to walk away when he stopped and turned around, "Hey before I forget."
Sally looked in his direction, "What?"
"The message is addressed to dad."
"And?"
Donald shrugged, "You keep saying you think Christopher might be alive but wasn't David Wilson also Vincent's son?"
Sally gave a single nod before he walked away. She looked at the writing on the wall and frowned, "What are you doing David Wilson?"
Meanwhile
David Wilson was panicking. He was holding a gun that wasn't his and in a car that he had parked a block away from the warehouse. He had ran as fast as he could so that he wasn't seen by the officers who were starting to surround the building. It had been a miracle that there was a fence close to the back of the building that he could jump over.
"Damned traitor," he cursed as he thought of Wanda. He knew it was some kind of trick. She never made the plans in their duo it was always him. Now Vincent knew David was still alive. He didn't want to go back to his morel room. What if someone saw him wearing his bloody clothes? He had been standing so close to Vincent that his father's blood had splattered on him.
He drove as fast as he could to the only person he thought could help him while calling her on his cellphone.
"Hello?"
"Are you home Eva?"
"Yeah. Who is this?" the voice asked suspiciously.
"It's me, David."
"David? What's wrong? You sound weird."
"I need your help Eva."
"What happened?"
"Can I come to your house?"
"Jacob's not here so yeah. He doesn't really like you at the moment," Eva said.
"That's fine. I'll grow on him. I'll be there in a few minutes," David said before hanging up the phone.
Once he arrived at Eva's house and she saw him, he started to feel a bit better.
"What the hell happened David? Why is there blood on your clothes?"
"It's a long story," David sighed.
"I have time."
"I need to change clothes."
"Well I don't' carry men's clothing around here David. I can give you something of Jacob's but he's going to kill you if he sees you wearing it."
"I'll take my chances," David muttered as he followed Eva to get some of Jacob's old clothing. "Is it alright if I take a quick shower first? I promise it isn't as bad as it seems."
"Did you kill someone?" Eva asked.
"No."
"Okay," she nodded and waited outside the bathroom door for him to finish. Once he was cleaned up, he asked if she could get rid of his bloody clothing.
"Why?"
"Because even though I didn't kill someone...I did something bad."
"What did you do?" Eva took a step back.
"Someone asked me to meet them at this old warehouse downtown. When I got there there I found that person...murdered. Demon King style."
Eva made a gagging sound.
"Well maybe not Demon King style. Her face was still intact. Anyway, I was going to leave when someone shoves a gun in my back. I'll give you one guess who it was."
Eva didn't take the guess so David continued, "It was Vincent McDaniels."
"You're kidding!"
"Nope. He goes on to tell me how much he hated Tom and didn't care about me. Basically admits how he's the real mastermind behind those murderes..."
"And?"
David sat down at the kitchen table, "We struggled over the gun and it went off but I didn't kill him. He was still alive when I left him but I fled the scene. The cops are still there."
"Do you think he's trying to frame you again?" Eva asked.
"Hell, I don't know. He's made my life a living nightmare. What else can he do to me?" David asked.
The sound of Eva's doorbell ringing surprised them both. "Hold on a second," Eva whispered as she walked to the front door and looked out the window. It was FBI Agent Roux.
"Open the door Eva! I know he's there. That's not your car in the driveway."
She heard David curse as he normally parked across the street.
"Come on Eva! Aiding and abetting a criminal is against the law."
"Open the door Eva," David whispered.
"But David-"
"Even if she takes me to jail, you still need to care for JD. Let her in. This was inevitable anyway." David walked behind her and opened Eva's door.
Special Agent Sally Roux had her hands on her hips when the door opened. The moment she saw David, her eyes widened.
"Come in Agent Roux," Eva said softly. Sally entered, her eyes still on David. She looked at Eva and then back at the man she recognized as the Demon King, "I know you're not the Demon King. Not the real Demon King, anyway."
"That's a relief," David answered.
Sally gave a sardonic grin, "Even so...I'm still going to have to arrest you."
Across Town
The laughter wouldn't stop as another vial of blood was filled to be sent to Special Agent Sally Roux and a note was being written to be sent to Vincent McDaniels.
Dear Father,
Did you miss me? I won't ask if you missed me since I already know the answer. Did you like my surprise to you? I hope it brought back good memories. We'll meet again soon. When I'm ready and when you least expect it.
XOXO
Christopher
