Chapter 22

Earlier that Day

"What exactly are we missing?" Special Agent Sally Roux asked aloud. It was a rhetorical question but her partner, Donald Ferguson, still answered.

"Maybe it has something to do with the vials of blood you're getting from the killer each time he kills a victim."

Sally sighed, "Maybe, but what do you think it means?"

"Well...what do you normally associate with blood?" Donald asked.

Sally tapped her fingers on the desk she was sitting at, "Blood means death."

"Your answer says a lot about you Roux," Donald chuckled.

Sally pressed her forehead against the cool metal desk in front of her and muttered, "What else could it mean?"
Donald shook his head as he looked at his partner. To everyone else, she appeared to be this calm and collected FBI Agent but in front of him, she had no qualms about showing her frustrations. He never gave her a hard time about it and Donald thought it had helped their partnership.

"Well when I think of blood...I think of family," Donald answered.

Sally didn't bother to look up, "You're a sick man Ferguson."

"I'm serious. Haven't you ever heard the saying that blood is thicker than water? It's about family. Blood bonds. Blood relations? Blood means family."

Sally lifted her head to rest it in her palm, "You know...maybe you're right. Maybe he's a blood relation to the demon king."

"Chad Harris?"

"No," Sally pulled out a file, "Chad Harris was just a patsy. I still think there's a mastermind behind everything. The question is...who is it?"

Donald sat across from his partner, "Why do you think that Chad was just a patsy?"

"Because what did he have to gain from it?"

"I'm not following," Donald confessed.

"Chad Harris was friends with Christopher McDaniels who is supposedly dead."

Donald nodded, "Okay. Go on."

"Even if he was friends with Christopher...is that a good enough reason to try and kill a bunch of women to frame Christopher's brothers Tom and David?"

Donald mulled this over, "Well maybe Christopher held a grudge because he was sent off to live with his uncle Roger Fleming while Tom stayed with their parents. Roger Fleming was abusive towards Christopher. Vincent McDaniels admits to spending time with David Wilson more than he did with Christopher. Maybe it really was just a grudge."

"That's very possible but it still doesn't explain why Chad would go to such lengths for a dead man. He got plastic surgery to look like David Wilson and became a serial killer. Why do that for someone that's already dead?"

"But you said Christopher is still alive," Donald interjected.

"Might still be alive," Sally corrected. "But I have no proof. It would just make more sense if he was."

"Then how would Vincent McDaniels fit into all of this?" Donald asked. "You've been saying Vincent was our guy since forever ago. Are you changing your mind?"

Sally leaned back in her chair, "Not at all. Vincent is our guy. Or at least he was. I think we're dealing with someone new."

"Sally, cut the crap and tell me what you're thinking," Donald fumed.

"It's going to sound crazy," Sally warned him.

"It already does," Donald responded dryly.

"I think that Christopher McDaniels is still alive and asked Chad Harris to help his father Vincent McDaniels. From the adult male sites we saw before, we know Chad was gay. Maybe he and Christopher were lovers or maybe he was in love with Christopher like a one-sided kind of thing. It would explain why Chad would risk his life for Christopher."

"Love does make people do crazy things," Donald agreed.

"As for Christopher, I'm not sure if they were working together or not but there's no way Vincent wrote that book in such a short period of time. I think he had it planned. The whole thing was planned to help his career."

"But what about now Sally? The murders aren't helping Vincent. They're hurting him. If Christopher and Vincent were working together like you say...why would the murders continue?"

"Because whoever is out there killing...isn't working with Vincent. At least not anymore."

Donald grunted and Sally asked, "What was that for?"

"I just had a thought."

Sally waited for him to continue. When he didn't, she asked, "Aren't you going to tell me what it is?"

Donald cleared his throat, "Well if Chad Harris got plastic surgery to look like David Wilson and he was really the Demon King who you killed...where is David Wilson?"

Sally looked at her partner and was about to answer when her phone rang, "Special Agent Roux."

As the voice on the other line continued talking, Sally took down an address and hung up the phone. She looked at her partner, "I just got an anonymous tip. Let's head out."

Donald recognized the look of determination on her face and followed her, "Where are we going?"

Sally answered, "An abandoned warehouse downtown."

Later that Day

Holly looked at the text message from Ian Crawford.

"Want to grab dinner?"

She scowled. Lunch had been a disaster. Holly had left and Ian had followed her out of the restaurant. She was sure that Vincent would scold her later. She read the message and was about to respond when a second message from Ian came through.

"Let's have dinner. Say yes."

Holly didn't understand why someone like Ian Crawford was paying attention to her but it was making her feel uncomfortable. Why was he trying to get closer to her when he would be leaving town soon"

She texted him back, "Aren't you leaving soon?"

His response was immediate, "Do you want me to stay?"

Holly didn't know what to text back.

"I can stay if you want me to. Do you want me to stay?"

His text message seemed as though he were flirting with her but Holly thought he was probably joking. She replied, "You should stick to your schedule."

"Won't you miss me?"

"I hardly know you," she typed.

"So get to know me."

Holly sighed. He wasn't giving up. She responded, "If you're going to leave town soon, I don't see the point in us becoming friends."

Ian responded with a frowning emoticon. "Should I go or should I stay?"

Holly still didn't understand Ian's actions but it wasn't everyday an up and coming handsome actor asked her to spend time with him so she texted back her answer, "Stay."

At the Abandoned Warehouse

"Hello David," the familiar voice of Vincent McDaniels repeated. "Did you miss me?"

David chuckled, "Why am I not surprised?"

"I won't lie. I'm shocked you knew how Beatrice looked the day she died." He was referring to Wanda wearing a white dress and a crown of white flowers. Her plastic surgery and dyed hair had already made her look like an older version of Beatrice.

David didn't feel like arguing with the man holding a gun to his back but he was compelled to respond, "If Wanda's death bothers you, I wish I could take credit for it."

"Don't lie David. You do know I could shoot you right now? No one would be the wiser."

David laughed, "Then do it. What are you waiting for?"
Vincent didn't answer right away so David continued, "Ahhh I see...you don't want shoot me because you think I might be telling the truth."

Vincent scoffed, "You never were one to beat around the bush. Just like your father."

It was a comparison David didn't appreciate since he despised Vincent. "I'm not like you. I haven't considered you my father in years."

"You used to love hunting with me. Going book shopping with me," Vincent recalled, "What happened?"

"Do you really care?" David asked.

Vincent shrugged, "No. Not really. Spending time with you was just a way to spend my time and make Tom suffer. The less time I spent with him, the more lonely and depressed he became."

"Why would you do that to him?" David asked, "He was your son. You framed him for murder!"

"I didn't do anything he didn't deserve!" Vincent cried. "Tom murdered his younger sister Beatrice. My only daughter! Because of him I had to put my career on hold! How do you think I felt? I missed my life of being known as the famous literary genius Vincent McDaniels. I couldn't do it anymore because then people would start prying into my daughter's death. They would discover that I gave birth to some psychopathic murderer! Tom deserved every bad thing that happened to him!"

David shook his head, "It's funny to hear you call someone else a psychopathic murderer."

"Shut up! Tom owed me. He owed me my career and all those years I lost in the spotlight."

"And what about me?" David asked. "What did I do to deserve being framed as the Demon King?"

Vincent smiled, "You were expendable. Things didn't work out as I wanted them to. It was supposed to be you and Tom working together as the Demon King. Instead I had to frame you and Kevin Landers and the truth about Tom was hinted at in my book. His reputation was ruined."

"He was your son," David reminded him.

"So? So are you," Vincent smiled, "I can always make more sons, David."

He felt the gun pressing closer into his back, "I'm going to shoot you and leave you here."

"And how do you plan to get away with my murder?" David asked.

"Oh that's easy. I'll make it look like a suicide."

David's mouth curled upward, "Sounds like you have everything worked out."

"I do," Vincent nodded.

"There's just one problem," David said.

"And that is?"
"I'm not ready to die yet." David swirled around and shoved Vincent backward. Vincent took a few awkward steps back to stop himself from falling. David took that opportunity to reach for the gun. Both men fell to the floor and could hear the sound of sirens nearby.

"Did you call the cops?" Vincent asked David.

David didn't answer and continued to struggle with Vincent for the gun. The sounds of the siren were getting closer and closer.

"One of us isn't going to make it out alive," David grunted.

"Probably not," Vincent agreed as they rolled together on the floor. Both men stared into one another's eyes as they fought for control of the gun. Both knew this had to end before the police arrived.

Outside the Abandoned Warehouse

"Turn the sirens off," Sally shouted to the police car that had pulled up next to her. She looked at her partner Donald, "The anonymous tip said we'd find another body here."

Donald walked alongside their vehicle and pulled out his weapon, "Are you ready?"

Sally nodded. They were about to step towards the building when the sound of a single gunshot filled the air.
