Chapter 20
"So where's Vincent? I'm surprised he's not here yet," Ian whispered to Holly, who was sitting next to him.
"I called him this morning but he said to go to the meeting without him."
Ian glanced at some of the other cast members that had reddened eyes. They probably thought the local news would be allowed in on the meeting. Otherwise, there wouldn't be any fake tears on anyone.
"I didn't know so many people liked Lauren," Holly murmured.
Ian shook his head, "So Vincent must've been really mad. What did he say?"
Holly looked away and shrugged, "Not much. He said he wouldn't be coming and for me to go in his place."
"That's weird. I would've thought he'd be really angry."
Holly agreed, "I thought so too but maybe he expected all this to happen."
"Expected the movie to be shut down?"
"Yeah. I can't imagine he expected it to actually continue with so many people dying. I'm surprised the studio allowed it to go as long as they did. I feel bad for everyone involved in this film."
"Yeah. For some of these actors, this was going to be their breakout role," Ian sighed.
"I'm talking about the people that died."
"Well of course them too," Ian fidgeted in his seat, "There's a lot to feel bad about."
"What are they doing here?" Holly asked pointing at the two FBI agents that walked into the room.
"You know them?" Ian asked.
"I've seen them around a few times so I know they're FBI. I wonder if they're going to question us again."
"Again?"
Holly looked at Ian askance, "They didn't question you before?"
"Before what?"
"Well...anytime someone's died, almost all of the crew was questioned."
"I was never questioned," Ian admitted, "Wouldn't that be a good thing?"
"I guess so. I guess it would mean you're not on their suspect list. Still...it's strange. I thought they'd interview everyone."
Ian watched as the female agent scanned the crowd, her eyes stopping on him. He knew the moment she started walking towards him that she was looking for him. "Ian Crawford?"
"That's me," Ian waved a hand in the air.
She nodded and the male agent began to walk behind her. He stayed back only to answer his cellphone. Sally looked at Ian, "I'm special agent Sally Roux. I just have a few questions to ask you."
"By all means. Ask away," Ian put his hands in his pockets and waited for her to continue.
"I'm sorry for your loss. I heard you and Lauren were somewhat of a couple."
"We casually saw one another. It wasn't serious."
"Really? That's not what I was told. I heard that you and she had a pretty intimate relationship."
"That sounds more intimate than it really is. She probably had a similar relationship with more than just me."
Sally cleared her throat, "Are you saying she had more than one sexual partner?"
"No, I'm saying I don't know who she was sleeping with."
"Other than yourself of course," Sally said.
Ian gave a quick look at Holly who looked uncomfortable, "Yes. Other than myself."
"I should probably let you two talk," Holly said softly, taking a small step away from them.
"It's okay Holly. It's not like I have anything to hide."
"No I think I should-"
Holly was interrupted by Sally, "So where were you last night between the hours of seven and twelve?"
Ian grinned, "Last night I was on a date."
"Date?" Holly asked. "That was a date?"
Sally turned to Holly and smiled, "Let me guess...you were his date?"
"That was a date?" Holly asked again.
"Of course it was. What did you think it was?" Ian asked her.
"I don't know. Two friends eating together?" Holly answered.
"I paid," Ian reminded her.
"You're rich," Holly shrugged.
"Excuse me but if you two are done playing the dating game...may I continue?"
Holly looked at Sally, her eyes wide, "I'm sorry. Go ahead."
Sally asked for the details of their dinner. Then she asked, "So then what did you do? Dinner doesn't last until midnight."
Ian crossed his arms, "What do you think we did?"
"Answer the question," Sally demanded.
"Do I have to spell it out for you? We're both young attractive people."
"So you two slept together?" Sally asked Ian who only smiled in response. Sally raised an eyebrow and looked at Holly who looked shocked, "Is that true? You don't seem like the type."
"The type?" Holly asked.
"Your quasi-boyfriend here said he was with you last night until," she looked at Ian for an answer.
"This morning. Like six maybe six-thirty," Ian answered.
Sally looked back at Holly who was staring at Ian, "Is that right?"
"Yes," Holly whispered. "He was with me last night."
"You know I can smell BS like a dog smells a bone, right?" Sally stepped closer to Holly.
"I'm sorry Agent Roux but we really need to get back to our meeting. I think it's going to start soon." Ian grabbed Holly's hand and walked away. When they were far enough from Sally he squeezed Holly's hand, "Thanks for covering for me. I'm sorry to put you in such a bind."
"No problem," Holly said softly, still not sure why she lied for him.
Meanwhile, Donald ended his call and walked up to his partner. She was staring at Ian Crawford, "You think he's cute?"
"What? No way! I was just trying to figure him out."
"Why?"
"Because of the text."
Donald chuckled, "We both know that was random. Still...what if he was the newest serial killer?"
Sally shook her head, "Why would he ruin the movie he's set to star in? It makes no sense."
"Wouldn't that be the perfect reason?" Donald asked. "No one would suspect him."
Sally looked at her partner and grinned, 'You're so smart sometimes Donald."
"Sometimes?" he said in mock offense.
"So who was it on the phone?"
"Forensics compared the prints on that toothbrush and on the knife the Demon King used."
"What did they say? Was it Christopher McDaniels? Was he the Demon King?"
"Nope."
"Then who?"
"Chad Harris."
Eva's House
"Put the gun down Jacob!" Eva was panicking.
"Easy now," David said slowly, his arms raised.
"What are you doing here?" Jacob asked. "I thought you were dead!"
"Jacob. It's a long story but he's not the Demon King."
"Really because that's not what the news has been saying for the past year and a half," Jacob muttered. Sweat was forming on his brow.
David's eyes darted to Jacob, "Listen man. I know you don't want to do this. You don't want to hurt me or anyone. I'm not a threat. I'm here to help."
"Help?" Jacob asked, "By doing what? Getting your disciples to help babysit?"
"Jacob!" Eva gasped.
"How could you let him in the house Eva?"
"He's not the Demon King! Jacob put the gun away. Let's talk about this. You know JD's in this house. How could you bring a gun here?"
"To protect this family Eva! Evil's staring you in the face and you're embracing it!"
"I'm not evil," David said.
"The blood in you is," Jacob muttered.
"I heard it's the same blood running in your veins too brother."
"Shut up! We're not brothers! I don't have corroded dirty blood inside me! Shut up!"
A piercing cry belonging to JD filled the air, causing Jacob to look up. David moved quickly and grabbed Jacob's wrist, moving it upward and twisting it so that he let the gun go. It landed with a soft thud to the ground and with his foot, David slid it a few feet away. He pushed Jacob back and pinned him to the wall.
"Stop! Just stop it!" Eva yelled.
"It's okay Eva. I'm not going to hurt him. Go check on JD," David ordered.
Eva looked at the two men, "I'll be right back! Don't you dare hurt each other!" She sprinted up the stairs leaving Jacob and David alone.
"Are you going to kill me now?" Jacob asked.
"I told you I'm here to help."
Jacob made a scoffing sound.
"I'm serious. I was framed! By Vincent McDaniels and his screwed up followers."
"Let me go!" Jacob tried pushing David away but he was too strong.
"You should really do more push-ups," David tried to joke.
"Screw you!" Jacob spit in David's face, angering him.
He pushed his elbow into Jacob's throat, "Listen up bro. Right now I'm a dead man so I wouldn't cross me. Cops can't arrest ghosts."
"Is that a threat?"
"That's a bona fide promise. I didn't kill anyone as the Demon King. I just want my life back. You don't like the Demon King do you? He killed your family. Joelynn. Don't you want revenge?"
Jacob stopped struggling, "Why should I believe you?"
"You don't have to believe me. Hell, I wouldn't believe me either if I were you. But I'm offering you a once in a lifetime chance to get revenge on the real Demon King. Not the guy that the public is supposed to believe is the Demon King but the real guy that's calling all the shots. Are you with me?"
Jacob nodded and David relaxed his hold. Jacob pushed him away and moved out of reach, "I still don't trust you but I'm curious enough to know. Who do you think the Demon King really is?"
David looked away and back at Jacob, "I think you already know the answer to that. It's Vincent McDaniels, our father."
Local Pizza Place
"Pepperoni or cheese?"
"Wouldn't it be a sin to eat either? You just had all that work done, it'd be a waste to let it all go by eating junk food."
Wanda looked up in surprise to see Vincent McDaniels staring down at her as she sat in the booth of the local pizza place. It was crowded and the lighting was dim so she thought it would be okay to eat out. "What are you doing here?"
"What? No hug for your brother?" Vincent snarled as he sat across from her.
She started to scoot out of the booth when his words stopped her, "Move one more inch and I'll make sure your death is painful."
"How did you find me?"
Vincent smiled, "I have my ways. The bigger question is for me to ask. What are you up to Wanda?"
Wanda looked around wildly for a waitress to call for help.
"I asked you a question Wanda."
"I don't know. I just wanted to look young."
Vincent shook his head in dismay, "I'm disappointed in you sister. Family is supposed to be honest with one another."
Wanda couldn't help herself, "What do you know about family?"
"I know enough about my family to realize that you're up to something."
"Get lost Vincent."
He laughed, "There's no way you have any money saved up and you never made too much hooking so who's helping you?"
"What?" her voice was tinged with fear.
"I could always tell when you were lying Wanda. Did you know that?"
"I'm not lying."
"Liar."
"I'm not Vincent!"
He grinned, "Liar. Liar. Pants on fire."
"I'm leaving Vincent," Wanda said as she made another attempt to leave the booth.
"Leave and I'll really make sure you catch on fire Wanda."
"What do you want from me?"
"Who's helping you and what do they want from me?"
"You're crazy. No one is after you."
"You're pissing me off Wanda. Talk or I'll cut your tongue out."
Wanda shuddered. It was the type of thing he'd do too. "You're not going to believe me."
"Try me."
She sighed, "He said his name is David. He said he's your son."
Vincent let the information soak in and Wanda gave a bitter laugh, "See? I told you that you wouldn't believe me."
Vincent looked up, "Oh I believe you but he should've been dead by now." Vincent groaned, "This is why you should always do things yourself if you want a job done right."
Wanda stared at him aghast.
"Well I guess daddy will have to teach his son a lesson," Vincent smiled.
"What are you talking about?"
"Wanda, you've been plotting against me. Do you think I'll let you off that easily? Plus there's the matter of Lupita Torres to settle."
The color drained from Wanda's face, "I had nothing to do with her death Vincent. I swear!"
"What did I tell you happens to liars? They burn. So shut up and listen to me."
"Vincent I'm telling the truth. I didn't touch Lupita."
Vincent knew she was lying but he wanted her help, "I know you're lying Wanda but I'll let you make it up to me."
Wanda grasped at his offer, "Anything Vincent."
"You're helping David who wants to hurt me."
"He made me Vincent! I didn't have a choice," Wanda leaned forward, "He's crazy Vincent."
"He's crazy?"
She nodded.
"Crazier than me?"
Wanda sat back in the booth, unsure of how to answer.
"Who's scarier? Him or me?"
"You," she whispered.
"Good. Then you're going to help me."
"How? How could I possibly help you Vincent?"
"You've heard of Benedict Arnold, right?"
