Chapter 20

"Hey are you alright?" Officer Dempsey was walking towards Joelynn Lewis who was seated at the police station near Detective Smith's desk.

"Hey Demspey, what brings you here?" Detective Ellis asked as he picked at some pink and blue cotton candy.

"I'm here because I heard Joelynn found a body part in her apartment. What the hell are you eating?"

"Cotton candy...can't you tell?"

"Of course I can tell...but why?"

Ellis sighed and looked at Joelynn who was holding her own clear bag of pink and purple cotton candy. "Hey, Smith told me to keep an eye out for you so hurry up and eat the fluffy stuff Joelynn. I bought it just for you."

Joelynn was clearly shaken up. She had her bag of carnival candy clutched to her chest and she couldn't keep her legs still. Dempsey scowled at Ellis, "Can't you see she's scared right now? Why would you try to make her eat crap right now?"

"For your information, when you're scared, you're supposed to eat a spoonful of sugar. We didn't have any but the convenience store had some cotton candy. It's for her own good."

Dempsey rolled his eyes. Luckily Joelynn wasn't paying attention to their idiotic conversation. She seemed to be a million miles away. Dempsey squatted down until he was eye level with her. "Joelynn? Joelynn are you okay?" He waved his hand in front of her face which finally broke her from her trance.

"What? Officer Dempsey? What are you doing here?"

"I told you to call me Evan."

Joelynn stayed quiet and Ellis laughed.

"Hey Joelynn," Ellis called out. When she turned to look at him, he held up his empty bag of cotton candy, "You need to eat the cotton candy to feel better. I'm not saying this to be funny. You're supposed to eat sugar when you're scared. My mom swears by it."

Joelynn didn't want the sugary confection but Ellis kept telling her to eat it. She opened the bag and took a bite. Surprisingly, she did feel a little better. She looked at Ellis who was looking through his desk drawers for a candy bar which he found and also offered to her. Joelynn laughed and shook her head in refusal.

"Damn Ellis, you keep eating those sweets and you're gonna get Diabetes," Dempsey stood up and Ellis flicked him off as he opened the candy bar wrapper.

"Thank you for the cotton candy Detective," Joelynn smiled at Ellis who winked at her.

"Joelynn I didn't know what you wanted, so I brought you a caramel latte because I know you like them." Detective James Smith was walking to his desk carrying a Starbucks drink holder. He gave a smoothie to Ellis, a latte to Joelynn, and took a latte for himself. He looked at Officer Dempsey and frowned, "Sorry, didn't know you were going to be here. I don't have a coffee for you."

Dempsey shrugged, "I wouldn't expect one. I just got here. Are there any leads on who might have done this?"

Detective Smith sat down next to Joelynn and leaned back in his chair. "I have a few guesses."

Joelynn turned to him and asked, "When will they find out who the toe belongs to?"

"I'm not sure Joelynn but I know the FBI is putting a rush on it. As soon as I know, you'll know."

"James...what if it's really hers?"

"Don't think like that Joelynn...for all you know this could just be some sick random prank that has nothing to do with Eva." After he said that, everyone became quiet. In all likelihood, they all knew it wasn't some random prank. Bloody body parts weren't left in people's beds randomly.

"I heard they got a suspect and they've brought him in. He's down in interrogation right now," Ellis said as he drank his smoothie.

"What? Who was it?" Joelynn asked.

Ellis shrugged, "I don't know. Some weird kid is all I heard."

Joelynn looked at Detective Smith, "Can we go and see? What if I know him? Then I'll know if he has Eva!"

"Joelynn, it wouldn't be wise to do that. We should let the FBI do their job."

"James..."

"No Joelynn. You need to stay put for now."

Joelynn was about to argue with him when Dempsey spoke up. "I'll take you there Joelynn."

"What?" both she and Smith asked at the same time.

"I'll walk you over there. We won't talk to anyone, just take a look."

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Smith asked.

"You can't keep her here and I'm willing to help her out."

"Are you saying I'm not?"

"Now boys," Ellis interrupted, "You're going to scare the lady. Smith sit down. It's not a big deal. Dempsey can't be a complete idiot to let her do anything too crazy."

Smith was standing up and ready to kick some ass if he needed to. He really didn't like Dempsey for some unexplainable reason. "Fine but if something happens, it's your ass." He looked at Joelynn. "I don't think this is a good idea."

"You worry too much James. I'll be right back, okay?"

James sat back down and grunted. She looked at Officer Dempsey and nodded. He began walking towards the interrogation room with Joelynn in tow.

"You think he likes her?" Ellis asked Smith.

"How the hell would I know?"

"Looks like you like her too," Ellis muttered.

"What did you say Ellis?"

"Nothing partner...nothing."

"I could have dated her if I wanted to...we're just friends. I don't like her like that. I just don't."

Ellis raised his eyebrows but didn't respond. If the look his partner had given Dempsey was any indication of how he felt, Ellis would bet money that Smith liked Joelynn.

Near the Interrogation Room

Dr. Colin Spencer was waiting at the police station to get a chance to speak with the suspect Sally had brought in.

"Hey, did you see your friend?"

Dr. Spencer turned around to see Special Agent Sally Roux standing behind him. "My friend?"

"Yeah. The one and only Vincent McDaniels."

Dr. Spencer looked at her if she had grown a second head, "Is there a reason I should call him my friend?"

"He's not your friend? I saw you having lunch with him so I thought you two were pals. You looked chummy enough when you were together."

"Sally, what are you talking about?"

"What am I talking about? Why are you trying to hide the fact that you know Vincent McDaniels? Tell me the truth. Are you working for him? Helping him with a book? Or are you one of his super fans that worships the Demon King?"

"Do you need an emergency session...because it sounds like you've completely lost it Sally."

Sally was about to respond when they were both interrupted.

"Dr. Spencer?"

"Yes?"

"What are you doing here?" Joelynn asked.

Sally looked from Joelynn to her previous one night stand. "Do you two know each other?"

They both answered at the same time with different answers.

"I'm sorry miss...but I don't recall who you are," Dr. Spencer looked at Officer Dempsey for help.

"Are you kidding me? How could you not remember me? I'm your patient. What kind of psychologist are you?"

Dr. Spencer started laughing which surprised Sally, Joelynn, and Officer Dempsey.

"Do you think I'm your psychologist?"

"I don't think. I know!"

"Ms. Lewis," Sally interrupted. She wasn't sure why Eva's cousin was here but she was causing a scene. "I'm sorry but I think it's best if you went to the lobby area. Dr. Spencer can't possibly be your therapist. He works for the FBI and doesn't take private patients."

Joelynn was about to argue when Dr. Spencer held his hand up. "I think I've figured out what's been going on. Sally...I didn't have lunch with Mr. McDaniels. I know you don't believe me but it's true. I really didn't have lunch with him."

"Not that this is the right time to discuss it, but if you didn't then who did?" Sally asked, crossing her arms.

"The same man that is this woman's therapist. My twin brother, Dr. Colt Spencer."

"You have a twin?" Sally asked.

Dr. Spencer chuckled, "I do."

"And he just so happens to be a psychologist...just like you?" Sally asked in disbelief.

"Yes. Is it really that strange?"

"No," Sally shook her head. "It's not strange. It's suspicious."

Joelynn looked like she wanted to say something else until Officer Dempsey stopped her, "C'mon Joelynn let's go."

Just then the door to the interrogation room opened up, and out came Sally's partner, Donald Ferguson. "Well I wish I could say this is the first time it has happened but it's not. The kid pissed himself."

Sally turned to look at her partner and hid a smile. Donald Ferguson loved to intimidate his suspects and he always bet her ten bucks that he could make the other party have some sort of urinary accident caused by fear.

He looked at Sally, "You owe me ten bucks Roux."

Sally nodded and out walked Artie Wilkerson. Since he hadn't been officially charged, he was free to leave whenever he wanted. He had a huge stain on the front of his pants.

"Artie?"

At the sound of Joelynn's voice, Artie looked up. His cheeks blushed red from embarrassment. "Joelynn?"

"What are you doing here?" Joelynn asked.

Sally groaned, "Who brought her here?"

Dempsey stepped forward, "Sorry ma'am, I didn't think it would be a problem."

"That's the problem officer. You didn't think. Get her out of here."

Joelynn wouldn't leave, "Are you the one they think is a suspect Artie? Do you know where my cousin Eva is at?"

Artie couldn't speak. He was frozen in embarrassment. Of all the things he expected to happen today, standing in front of Joelynn Lewis with a giant piss stain running down his pants, wasn't one of them.

"You're such a freak!" Joelynn screamed. "Tell me what you did to Eva!"

"Take her away, now!" Sally demanded. Joelynn continued to yell at Artie, who stood as still as a statue.

Officer Dempsey had to drag Joelynn away.

"What's going on? What was that yelling about? Arite? What happened?" Wanda was coming down the hall with Vincent McDaniels right behind her.

"It looks like he wet himself Wanda." Vincent laughed.

"What the hell is going on today? Is there a full moon out?" Sally muttered to herself. She didn't appreciate having so many people making a scene.

Dr. Spencer had stayed quiet and was staring at Artie who was also quiet. It was like he was in his own little world that no embarrassment or person could invade upon.

"Artie? Artie are you okay?"

A single tear fell from Artie's right eye, followed by another and another. He wasn't making a sound but he was crying and everyone seemed to become quiet.

"Artie are you okay?" Dr. Spencer asked.

"I..." Artie was whispering, "I want to die."

The Torres Household

"Jacob...how long are you going to stop talking to me?"

"I do talk to you," Jacob said as he sat at the kitchen table eating some soup.

"You come home with a bandage on your head and you won't tell me what happened. Que pasó?"

"Nothing mom. Don't worry about it."

"Don't worry about it? How can I not worry about it? You can't keep this a secret from me."

"Can't I? You lied to me! You used to be a prostitute and you never told me!"

Lupita Torres stared silently at her son before answering, "Ask me how long I was a prostitute."

"I don't care."

"Ask me!"

"Fine! How long were you a hooker? How long did you agree and get paid to let strangers have sex with you for money?"

"One hour."

"What?" Jacob was confused. He hadn't expected his mother to answer his crude questions.

"I dressed up and went out with a woman who was supposed to show me what to do. She told me to get in this nice car with a man...and I did. Except he wasn't a customer. It was someone I knew. A man that knew your sister Nessa and her father." Lupita sat down and rested her forehead in her hands. "You said I was a hooker. You said it was consensual. You said I got paid...but that isn't true."

"What are you talking about?" Jacob was confused.

"The first night I went out to try and support your sister...I was taken by a man that knew my husband. It wasn't consensual."

"Are you saying you were raped?" Jacob didn't want to hear anymore.

"Si. Yes." Lupita gave a rueful laugh. "To be a hooker, you're supposed to get paid money, right?"

Jacob didn't answer.

"I wasn't paid Jacob. Not unless you count the baby he put in my stomach."

Jacob didn't catch on right away. Lupita Torres was crying. She never wanted the truth to come out but she didn't trust Vincent and Jacob had to understand what happened that night. She couldn't carry the burden alone anymore.

"Baby?"

Lupita looked up.

"You had another child?"

"I've only had two children Jacob. Your sister, God rest her soul, and you."

As it dawned on Jacob what she was saying, it felt like the world was caving in on him, "My father was...is...a rapist?"

Lupita didn't want to answer that.

"Oh my God. Why did you keep me?"

"Abortion is a sin Jacob. After you were born, I loved you. I told you that you and Nessa shared the same father but your dad is someone else."

"Is he still alive?"

"Yes."

"Is he in jail?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"I don't ever want to deal with him again Jacob. He's a very evil man and I want you to stay away from him too. Por favor, just stay away from him."

"Who is it?"

"It's not important anymore."

Jacob stood up, "Tell me who it is!"

It was now or never for Lupita Torres. The moment she dreaded but knew had to come. "You've already met him."

"I know the bastard?"

"Yes."

Jacob wracked his brain for possible rapist fathers but came up empty. "Just tell me who it is."

After taking a deep breath, she whispered, "Vincent. Vincent McDaniels.

Jacob's knees buckled and he sat down. Of all the names she could've mentioned, his wasn't one he was expecting. Vincent McDaniels was a popular author but his children were all crazy...even he knew that.

"I'm gonna kill him." He stood up and was about to storm out when his mother stopped him.

"Jacob. No matter what, you are my son and I love you."

He turned around and slowly hugged his mother who was now crying. Despite his mother's words, his anger hadn't abated. Jacob knew that no matter what, he would have to kill Vincent McDaniels.
