Chapter 18

"Are you sure about this Roux?"

Sally looked at her partner Donald Ferguson and nodded, "On the count of three."

Donald quickly unlocked the door and the two barged in, guns drawn, shouting, "FBI!" as they saw two men standing in front of them. The house was a mess. It looked like someone had turned the house inside out. The two men vandalizing the house stopped what they were doing. One of the men flung a large text at Ferguson who dodged out of the way. The two men ran in different directions, causing Donald to run after one and Sally to run after the other.

"I said freeze!" Sally shouted as she chased the man into a dark hallway. She advanced slowly, "It's not a good idea to run from the FBI."

She heard faint laughter and quickly spun around to where the sound was coming from. She couldn't see a light switch and walked into one of the bedrooms. She was surprised when she felt someone kick the back of her knees, causing her to stumble forward. She lost the grip on her gun and it slid forward and out of her reach. She quickly turned around to see her attacker preparing to kick her. She grabbed his leg and pulled. He lost his balance and fell forward on top of her. Sally pushed him off of her and the two struggled. She landed a quick punch to his face which he attempted to return. Sally dodged his fist and landed another punch to his torso. As he doubled over on his knees, she grabbed the back of his head and pushed his head downward, slamming it against the hard floor.

She cringed at the cracking sound she heard and pulled out her handcuffs. "That sounded like it hurt," she muttered as she tried to cuff him.

He rolled away from her, "You bitch!"

Sally knew her gun was in the direction he was heading towards, "If you stop right now, I'll go easy on you."

"Yeah right! I'm not stupid."

"Who are you?" Sally asked. "Are you one of the Demon King's crazy fans?"

"A disciple?"

"Crazy fan...disciple. They're the same in my book," Sally was standing now as the two faced one another. She was wondering if she should just lunge forward. She didn't know if he had a weapon since the room was still pitch black. "So do you know Chad Harris?"

"You mean the guy that owned this house?" the intruder asked.

"That's right, just keep talking," Sally thought. "Yeah. Did you know him?"

She could hear the man laughing, "No. Didn't know him. Not personally anyway."

"So you know of him?" Sally deduced aloud.

"Everyone knew of him."

Sally didn't quite understand, "What are you doing in this house? Why were you destroying everything?"

"Now why would I tell you that?"

She took another step forward, "You know you're going to tell me eventually. Either here or at the station. I'll have you spilling your guts faster than you can say Demon King."

She heard him laugh again, "I doubt that. The true disciples that serve him would never betray his confidence."

"You make it sound like he's still alive. Don't you know? I'm the one that killed him? I shot him dead."

The man didn't respond and Sally took another step forward, "When I shot him, I watched him fall and do you know what I did right after?"

He still didn't respond.

"I smiled," Sally whispered into the darkness. "I smiled because I finally killed that sick sonofab-"

"Enough!"

Sally smirked, "What? Don't like hearing about your hero's death? He was such a wuss at the end. Afraid I would shoot him. He begged me not to kill him. He got down on his knees and begged. Did you know that?"

"You're lying! Lies!"

Sally took another step forward, feeling naked without her gun. She could barely see in front of her. The only light in the room was from moonlight seeping in through the window.

"He would never beg for his life. We all know that death is a possibility!"

"Maybe your leader wasn't as strong as you thought he was." Sally took another step forward, "There's no shame in cooperating with us. I'll make sure your sentence isn't heavy. Just tell me what you know. Who sent you to this house?"

"I'm not saying a thing!"

"You say that now but a few hours in interrogation and I guarantee you'll change your tune. Even the Demon King was weak."

"No," the anguish in that single word was overwhelming. Sally knew he was close to breaking down. "The Demon King...he would never."

Sally interrupted, "Oh but he did. He even told me about Vincent McDaniels." It was a stretch but Sally knew Vincent was involved in this Demon King business.

"What? Vincent too?"

Sally could hear his surprise and disappointment, "That's right. I know all about Vincent. You should give it up now and confess who sent you here. Was it Vincent?"

"I don't believe you but I won't take any chances."

Sally saw the flash of silver but it was too late. He quickly stabbed himself in his chest, toppling over. Sally rushed forward and kicked the knife that had fallen from his hands, out of his reach. She grabbed a nearby blanket and attempted to stop the bleeding while calling an ambulance.

A few minutes later, her partner walked in, flooding the room with light. "What the hell happened in here?"

"This idiot stabbed himself instead of coming down to the station with me," Sally answered.

"Sally?"

"What?" she asked, her voice laced with impatience.

"I think you can stop now," Donald whispered. "He's dead Sally."

She looked down and felt for a pulse. Donald was right. He was dead. "Did you catch your guy?"

"No. He got away. Listen Sally. Once the other cops get here we'll need to go."

"Why?"

"They found another victim. Lauren Bolgers."

Sally nodded. They wouldn't be leaving anytime soon. Lauren's body would have to wait. "Donald. I need something that belonged to Harris. Will you get it for me? Something I can run his DNA off of."

"Would a toothbrush do?" Donald said holding one up in a plastic baggie.

Sally was thankful but only nodded.

Donald watched her continue to hold the blanket over the stab wound. "Sally...this wasn't your fault. If he stabbed himself it's his own fault he's dead."

"I know."

They waited in silence for the ambulance to come.

Later that evening Motel 6

"I'm not sure what I'm doing here," Eva whispered.

"You said you wanted to talk," David reminded her.

Eva sat on the cheap comforter and looked around at the off-white walls. "I heard from Sally today. The man that threatened to kill me that night...wasn't you."

"I could've told you that. In fact, I did tell you that," David said quietly as he stood in a corner of the motel room.

He started to walk towards Eva, who held up a hand, "Stop. Just stay where you are. There's something I want to tell you."

David nodded, "Is it okay if I sit down?"

"Go ahead," Eva crossed her arms as David sat in a chair next to him.

"I'm listening," David waited for her to continue. He wasn't sure what to expect when it came to Eva.

"I want to get everything out so don't interrupt me until I'm done. Okay?" She waited for him to agree and once he did, she cleared her throat, "This is all very hard for me. I hope you understand that. I need you to understand that."

"Of course I-"

"I said not to interrupt me," Eva reminded him. She stood up from the bed and began pacing the room. "You and I...we had been friends for years. I depended on you. I liked joking around with you. For the longest time I considered you a good friend."

Eva looked at David who continued to watch her. She quickly looked away, "But that all changed after the Demon King came to town. You know I'm not really used to being in relationships or even having people close to me. I think Joelynn was the closest person to me. My parents were reporters and they were always gone. All they cared about was their next story. It's what killed them."

David fidgeted in his seat as he waited for her to continue.

"I've never really dated anyone seriously because I tend to push people away but you somehow got through to me. I don't know if it was because I was scared and vulnerable but you did. Then when I thought you were the Demon King...I felt like something inside me died. I felt so betrayed. It's hard to bounce back from and I'm only telling you this because I want you to understand what I'm going through right now."

"Eva..."

"No. I have to say this. You may not be the man that threatened my life David. But I still can't trust you. Where were you all this time when I was kidnapped and when JD was born? How can I forgive you purposely hiding from us?"

She heard David sigh, "Are you finished?"

"Yes."

"Eva...I want you to listen carefully because I'm only going to say this once. I'm not saying it to make you feel bad but let's just clear the air right here. Right now."

Eva sat down on the bed as David stood up, "After you and I got together, I was happy. Hell happy doesn't even do what I felt justice. I was over the moon ecstatic." David looked at Eva, "The woman I loved more than anyone else in the world let me hold her. Let me kiss her. Let me make lover to her. I was happy Eva. But somehow it didn't last. Do you want to know why?"

Eva crossed her arms and waited for him to go on.

"Because the woman I loved. The woman I thought maybe loved me was throwing me to the dogs."

"David!"

"No Eva. Let's get it all out. You accused me of being the Demon King. We argued but then we had to save Joelynn. I'm fighting for my life and get stabbed. I confess my love to you. I get admitted to the hospital and I wait. I wait and wait. Wait for the woman I love to come visit me. To check on me. Anything!"

"David I-"

"No, Eva. Don't try to give me some BS answer about why you didn't see me. Why are you upset with me now because I wasn't there for you when you needed me? You weren't there for me. I'm not trying to sound petty but I want you to understand that I didn't think you needed me. I didn't think I would be welcome. Not to mention that the FBI and every cop in a hundred mile radius would be after me. I had to figure things out. Come up with a plan. You haven't been the only one suffering Eva!"

"You're right," she whispered.

"Damned straight! Wait...what?" David hadn't expected her to agree with him.

"You're right. I wasn't there for you before and I sent you mixed signals. The truth was I didn't know David. I wasn't sure how I was supposed to feel about you. After I was abducted and Joelynn was killed...I regretted a lot of things. How I treated you was one of them."

"It was?"

Eva nodded, tears starting to seep down her cheeks, "Yeah. I'm so stupid. I thought you were a serial killer but I still had these thoughts. Maybe if I had been nicer to him. Maybe if I had told him that I loved him...he wouldn't have turned into the Demon King. He wouldn't have hurt other people because he'd be content with our relationship. I stupidly thought my love could've save you."

"It's not stupid Eva."

"Yes it is! I pushed you away when I shouldn't have. I should've known you'd never try to kill me. You love me." Eva realized what she blurted and tried to correct herself, "Loved me."

David sat next to Eva on the bed, "You had it right the first time."

Eva felt a tickle run through her chest but she continued speaking, "After Joleynn died...I was so lonely. I was pregnant and poor Jacob had to help me through the pregnancy. Do you know how sad things were at first?"

David wrapped an arm around her, "I'm sorry. I should've come to you sooner."

"Why didn't you David?"

He kissed the top of her head, "I was trying to come up with a plan."

"A plan?"

"I have to get my good name back Eva. If I want a second chance with you and JD...I have to succeed in this."

"Succeed in what? Clearing your name? I told you we can get Sally to help."

"No Eva. We have to do things my way. Things are well underway now. It's too late to turn back."

Eva looked at David's apprehensive expression, "What does this plan involve?"

"Revenge."

"Against who?"

David only hesitated for a moment before answering, "My father, Vincent McDaniels."

"Why against him?"

"Because I'm fairly certain this is all his fault. I'm also certain he had something to do with me being framed as the Demon King."

"Why would he do that?"

"I'm not too sure just yet. I know he wanted Tom framed because he blamed Tom for having to stop writing years ago."

"Because Tom killed Beatrice?"

David nodded, "Vincent McDaniels is the epitome of evil Eva. I just want to teach him a lesson."

"What kind of lesson?"

"It's better if you didn't know. Let's just say that when everything is said and done, he's going to wish he was dead."

The cold look in David's eyes was frightening. She realized he was holding her and tried to push away from him.

"No Eva. Let me hold you for just a little longer. Please."

"David?"

"Hmm?"

"Do you think you and I will ever stop having to fight the Demon King?"

David gave a wan smile, "He's just a boogey man that you and I will defeat."

"But he killed Joelynn," Eva began to quietly sob, "David sometimes I get so scared because I'm worried about him coming after JD."

"Where is JD?"

"With Jacob. I wasn't sure how long I'd be so I told him not to wait up."

"Jacob's my half-brother," David said quietly. "I don't know him very well but he's been taking care of my son. He must be a good guy."

"He is. He misses Joelynn a lot. The Demon King took away his entire family David. You say he's a boogey man but he's not. He's very real and very dangerous."

David squeezed her tighter, "Where's the fearless Eva Lewis I fell in love with?"

"She's gone David. Now I'm just a woman trying to keep her son safe."

"Our son," David whispered.

Eva nodded, "Our son."

A single tear slid down Eva's cheek and David wiped it away. He leaned in and kissed her cheek. "I missed you Eva," he whispered against her skin. When she didn't immediately pull away from him, he moved closer to her lips and kissed her again.

"I'm not sure what to think about all this," Eva confessed after he kissed her.

David slid a hand up her shirt and lightly nipped at her neck as his hand cupped a breast, "Don't think Eva. Just feel."
