Chapter 15

"What's that supposed to mean?" Sally asked as she tried to grab her camera from Vincent. He easily moved it out of her reach.

"I can't imagine that it's okay for you to be spying on me for no reason? Does your boss know you're doing this?" Vincent asked.

"You think we let every suspect know that we're watching them?"

"So you're saying I'm a suspect?" Vincent laughed. "How did you become an FBI agent? You're not very bright."

"Give me back my camera."

"Not until you tell me why you think I should be a suspect Special Agent Roux."

Sally's eyes narrowed at his mocking tone, "You wanna know what I think? I think too many coincidences surround you. You have a ton of crazy fans because one of your sons was a murderer and the other was a serial killer. I'm thinking the apple probably didn't fall too far from the tree in your family."

Vincent looked down and chuckled. "You're so cute. You said I had a ton of crazy fans, right? Well you'd be correct. They are crazy. I noticed that the media conveniently left out the name of the FBI agent that killed the Demon King. I was told it was for her safety. I wonder what would happen if I accidently let that information slip. You'd be surprised what my fans would do for me."

"Is that a threat?"

"No...it's just a hypothetical question."

Sally held out her hand, "Give me back my camera."

Vincent deleted the pictures she had taken of him. "I'll let this go for now because I have a soft spot for beautiful women. Do this again, and be prepared for the consequences." He handed the camera back to Sally and walked away. Sally cursed under her breath because despite the consequences, she wasn't going to stop watching Vincent McDaniels.

At the Police station

His shift was almost over and he still hadn't gotten a chance to talk with Officer Dempsey.

"Calm down Smith. Even if you can't get in touch with him, I'll call Joelynn myself," his partner Detective Ellis said as he inhaled a burrito.

"Will you stop eating for two minutes?"

Ellis shrugged, "No."

"Smith?" Officer Dempsey was coming towards him, "I heard you wanted to talk to me?"

"Yeah. Where have you been all day?"

Officer Dempsey suddenly became stiff, "That's none of your business. Just tell me what you want so I can be on my way."

"Now boys, no need to enter some kind of pissing contest," Ellis said in between burrito bites, "We're all in this together now."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Dempsey asked.

Smith handed Dempsey the note that he had found earlier at the crime scene. It was secured in a clear plastic evidence bag.

Dempsey read the note,"The Lewis woman is next. Where did you get this?" Dempsey asked.

"You know I handle homicides. Where do you think?" Smith asked. "Look, I know you were handling Eva's case and Joelynn talked to you a lot. I need you to warn her. This is probably about Eva but still...she needs to know."

"Why don't you tell her?" Dempsey asked.

"She hates him," Ellis said with a mouthful of burrito.

"Shut up Ellis!" Smith snapped at him.

"Someone's being a little touchy today." Ellis turned around to face his desk and finish his burrito.

"I'm asking you to keep an eye out for her," Smith said.

Dempsey handed the evidence back to Smith, "I got it. Don't worry. I was doing that before you even asked."

As Dempsey walked away, Smith sighed. He didn't know why but for some reason he didn't like Officer Dempsey.

Later that Night at the Pink Flamingo

Jacob was sitting at the bar of the Pink Flamingo and drinking more than his usual. He was still pissed about Joelynn. He didn't understand why she continued to be so obsessed with finding Eva herself.

"Hey there Jacob."

Jacob looked up to see Edward, the handsome man he had met a few nights before.

"Hi." Jacob raised his glass as if he were toasting Edward.

"Is everything okay?"

Jacob shook his head. "I'm fighting with my best friend that's all."

"And you're this upset? Should I be jealous?"

Jacob smirked, "My best friend is a girl and you and I aren't dating."

"Not yet..." Edward smiled and then ordered a drink. "So what's the deal with your best friend?"

"I want to teach her a lesson so that she'll stop playing with fire," Jacob sighed.

Edward laughed. "I'm sorry did you just say you wanted to teach her a lesson?"

Jacob put his head on the bar. "I love her like a sister. I just don't want her to do dangerous things anymore."

"What kind of dangerous things?"

Jacob gave Edward a rundown of everything that had happened to Joelynn.

"Wow...that could be like...a movie or something." Edward took another drink of his beer.

"Yeah. I already lost my sister Nessa. I don't want to lose Joelynn too."

"I'll tell you what Jacob. How about I help you out?"

"What do you mean?"

"You want to stop Joelynn from doing stupid stuff, right? I can help you."

"How?"

"Do you trust me?"

"I don't even know you."

"Oh that hurts," Edward pretended to grab his heart. "C'mon. I'll help you solve your Joelynn problem." Edward pushed himself away from the bar and Jacob followed him outside. "I need to stop by my house to change clothes but it won't take long."

"Is this your way of getting me to follow you home?" Jacob joked.

Edward smiled, "Did you drive here?"

Jacob nodded, "It's okay if I leave my car here though. A lot of people do."

"Great." Edward led Jacob to his car and the two drove to Edward's house which was outside of town and in what Jacob considered the country area.

"You live here alone?" Jacob asked.

"Yeah. I like it here. It's quiet."

Jacob looked around him. Edward lived in a house that was isolated. He didn't have neighbors and there was a cornfield nearby. Jacob could see a scarecrow in the middle of the cornfield. He didn't think people actually used those in large cornfields. "It's nice...in a creepy kind of way."

"Hey, you're gonna hurt my feelings," Edward joked.

Jacob laughed. "You could hide bodies in that cornfield.

"What makes you think I don't?"

Jacob laughed as the two entered Edward's home, "So this is it. Feel free to look around while I go change."

Edward went to his bedroom, leaving Jacob alone in the living room. It was very bare except for a crystal vase of white roses. Jacob couldn't figure out what was off about it until he thought of his own living room. Edward's home didn't have any family photos. He waited in the living room for a few minutes before walking to the kitchen area. It looked very clean...almost sterile. He noticed a hallway to the side of the kitchen area. He followed it and found himself staring down a dark stairwell.

"This is weird." Jacob whispered to himself.

"What are you doing?"

Edward's voice scared Jacob who jumped in fear. "Crap you scared me!"

Edward laughed. He was now dressed in black and wearing glasses.

Jacob asked, "You wear glasses?"

Edward nodded, "I usually wear contacts but I think I prefer glasses for what we're going to do tonight."

Jacob took in Edward's dark outfit, "Are we robbing a house or something? Because I'm not down with that."

"Yeah right. We're going to help your friend Joelynn, that's all."

Jacob looked at the stairwell again, "Does this lead to a basement?"

Edward nodded, "Yeah but I can't let you see it right now. I have my pet down there and you might scare her. She can be a real bitch to strangers."

Assuming he meant a female dog, Jacob asked, "You have a dog? What kind is she?"

Edward laughed, "A pregnant one. So she won't be nice. C'mon let's go." Edward grabbed Jacob's hand and dragged him away from the stairwell. Jacob walked into the living room with Edward following behind him. He touched the top of the roses as he passed them.

"So where are we going now?" Jacob asked.

"You'll find out when we get there but for now...I need you to go to sleep."

Jacob thought he misheard. He was about to turn around to ask Edward to repeat himself when he was struck on the head by the crystal vase. He remembered seeing white roses on the floor beside him before he went unconscious.
