28-Dumbledore Has News
Leo's POV
"Wilby?" I said incredulously. I looked around the room, but Wilby wasn't present, nor was Drew.
"Who's Will Bee?" Nico asked. "Oh, never mind."
For some reason, Annabeth didn't look convinced, "Why would be put his own name on the paper? I bet somebody framed him." She turned back to Sylvia, "Did you see the person who gave it to you?"
She shook her head, "No, it was just on my bed last night."
"So it's a Gryffindor!" Percy concluded.
"Not necessarily," I said, I was remembering something Drew said one time, It's the easiest thing in the world to get into other Houses' common rooms.
Annabeth seemed to be thinking the same thing, "You didn't have a clue who put it there? When you found it I mean."
"I didn't care, I just liked the necklace," Sylvia eyed the necklace like she wanted to take it back and die.
"Oh. Well has it gotten smaller in the other classes?"
"No."
"You had it on the whole day?"
"Yes."
"Uh," I interrupted, "shouldn't we like, find Wilby or something?"
Annabeth nodded distractedly, "I suppose. Ask Hermione for the Marauder's Map, she or Harry might have it."
"The what Map?"
She waved me on, staring at the necklace. I could practically see the gears working in her brilliant brain.
I asked Hermione for Mah Otter's Map. She gave me a weird look until realizing what I meant, "Oh! I think Harry has it."
She quickly tapped Harry on the shoulder, "May I have the Marauder's Map?"
Harry handed it to her without a word.
"Thank you," Hermione tapped it with her wand. "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good."
I blinked in pleasant surprise, "You are?"
Hermione shushed me, "Look."
Ink appeared on the parchment until a drawing of Hogwarts appeared, with the words, Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs are proud to present THE MARAUDER'S MAP
I opened it, and a giant map of Hogwarts unfolded, "Whoa."
Clusters of footprints were in the classrooms. Filius Flitwick's name appeared next to a pair of footprints, which were facing two students' names. Lester Crosswood and Isaac Piramid, who were probably the ones who had caused the fireworks.
Dumbledore was pacing his office, Drew was in her dormitory staring at the wall, and I wasn't sure what Wilby was doing. He was in one of the corridors on the second floor, facing the staircase. He seemed to be going in a slow circle. The weird thing was that his feet weren't moving, but he was still moving. Like he was gliding or something.
"I'm going to find Wilby," I said, "come on Pipes. You too Jason."
We were about to leave when Isabell Kabrat ran up to us, "I'll come with you!"
"No," I said instantly. She looked at us kind of wide-eyed. I recognized the look. She was panicking, but trying to act like nothing was wrong.
Isabell glanced at Annabeth, who had the necklace on the desk and was shooting spells at it experimentally. Isabell turned back to us, "Let me out!"
We blocked the door, "Nope."
Isabell pulled out her wand and hissed at us, "You Mudbloods better move aside or I'll—"
"Nobody leaves," Annabeth said suddenly, picking up the necklace with her bare hands. "I think I've got it."
"Prior Incanto," she pointed her wand at Duncan's wand, and smoke poured out of it, forming into the shape of a ball of fire.
I realized what the spell did—show the last spell the caster used—the same instant Jason did. He pointed his wand at Isabell's and said, "Prior Incanto" the second Isabell said, "No!"
A faint projection of the golden necklace appeared above her wand, shrinking in size.
Isabell threw her wand on the ground, "NO! NO NO NO!!"
Annabeth crossed her arms, "The necklace isn't cursed. You used the Shrinking Charm on it. It could get through the Shield Charm because it's not supposed to be a harmful spell."
"I-I-I didn't!" Isabell screeched. "I'm innocent!!"
"Did you act alone?" Annabeth asked.
"NO I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING YOU STUPID KNOW-IT-ALL!!"
"You're going to Dumbledore's office," Annabeth said firmly, "you'll be expelled for sure."
"NO! I'll be ruined! My mother will sue you all penniless! My father will have your hide! My family will hunt all of you idiots down for suspecting me when I didn't. Do. ANYTHING!"
"Isabell," Annabeth said firmly. "Stop screaming. Now do I have to drag you there or—"
"WHERE'S WILBY?" Isabell yelled, getting desperate. "HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE HERE HELPING ME!!"
Annabeth grabbed her arm and began dragging her out the door.
"This is assault and battery!" Isabell screeched. "Duncan help me!"
Duncan stumbled forward, looking confused, but he shook out of his daze, and both he and Kreto charged towards us, wands raised.
Annabeth threw up a Shield Charm and calmly turned away when they both smashed into it.
Isabell snatched up her wand and put it in her pocket, "Fine! Just don't touch me!"
She let go of her arm, "Go on."
Isabell walked ahead, then suddenly turned around and said, "And I didn't act alone. I've finally made a true friend at Hogwarts. She's much better than you freaks shows."
"Keep on walkin', " Annabeth said, unfazed.
Along the way, students were rushing around, going to different classrooms to tell all the teachers what happened.
We quickly got to the second floor, and found Wilby hanging by the back of his robes on the chandelier.
He looked relieved when we found him, "Is class over?"
"Nope," Percy said, "but how—"
"What are you doing up there?!" Isabell demanded.
Wilby blinked, then shrugged, "Not much." He gestured at the ground, and we saw his wand laying there all sad and alone.
Percy got him down, and he rubbed his collar, "Thanks."
We stood there waiting for an explanation, so Wilby said, "Oh, Duncan put me up there."
"HE DID?!" Isabell shrieked.
Wilby backed away from her, "Why is she with you?"
"We're taking her to Dumbledore," Annabeth said.
"...What for?"
"For multiple felonies."
"Oh," he still looked confused.
"Why was your name on the note?" Percy asked
"What note?"
Percy seemed to remember that Wilby hadn't even been to Charms. "The note that came with the necklace."
"What necklace?" he looked at us like he was waiting for us to get to the point.
"Oh we're wasting time," Annabeth grumbled, "walk faster Isabell."
Along the way, Isabell seemed to get more and more confused. Then she stopped walking altogether, "Where are we going?"
"Dumbledore's Office," Annabeth said, giving her a weird look.
When we got there a minute later, Dumbledore was waiting for us outside, "Come on in."
It was really crowded, with nine armchairs around Dumbledore's desk, but we managed.
Dumbledore gazed at Isabell, "You seem confused."
"What did I do this time?" she grumbled.
"What did you do?" Thalia exploded. "What did you do?!"
Isabell looked at Thalia in disgust, "Your hair looks like a blue skunk."
Dumbledore gently pushed Thalia back into her seat, "Please stay seated." He sounded like a flight attendant.
Thalia growled like a wolf.
"You mentioned that you weren't working alone," Annabeth said to Isabell.
"Alone with what?"
"Do you have short-term memory loss or something?" Thalia demanded. "Because nobody forgets something like that."
"Like what?!"
Thalia glared at her, "If you think playing dumb is going to help, then you're—"
Dumbledore raised his hand for silence, "Isabell, do you remember where you were last night?"
Isabell looked stunned, "No, I don't."
"How about the night before that?"
"I was finishing my homework in my common room."
"Are there many things you seem to not remember? Maybe a few hours seem to be missing?"
Isabell nodded slowly.
"But she admitted to what she did!" I said. "When we started walking here!"
We told her what she said, about making a friend at Hogwarts.
Dumbledore stroked his long beard, or maybe his hair, or his mustache, I couldn't tell. "Then perhaps the friend saw her and erased her memory of all the times they've talked."
"Or she's lying," I pointed out.
Dumbledore laughed, "Over the years, I have become quite an expert at telling when people lie."
"Well that narrows it down," Annabeth said. "We didn't pass that many people." She counted on her fingers, "Duncan went into the Transfiguration classroom, Sylvia and her friend went to the Hospital Wing, I saw two Gryffindors girls I don't know the name of, but I know their face, and of course Wilby. But Isabell said the friend's a girl."
"What are you weirdos talking about?" Isabell demanded.
I realized I was still holding the Map, "And surprisingly Drew wasn't anywhere close to Charms. And she's still there."
"Ah," Dumbledore said, "Drew and Wilby. I remember them from their first year. They were friends you know."
I stared at him like he'd dropped from the moon. I considered getting my ears checked.
"Are we talking about the same Drew?" Annabeth asked before I could. "Drew can be a boy or a girl name."
"Drew Getaway?" Dumbledore smiled.
And when we nodded, he went on, "I think they went to the same school before Hogwarts, because they seemed surprised to see each other here. I remember Drew was not eager to make an acquaintance with a boy. She still believed that all boys were irresponsible pigs that couldn't be trusted."
I laughed, "Sounds like the Hunters of Artemis. Apparently their dating thing isn't seasonal."
"Eventually," Dumbledore continued as if I hadn't spoken, "near the end of first year, Drew learned to trust him more. But at the start of second year, they had a big fight. I do not know what it was about, but nearly the entire Slytherin common room was destroyed in an explosion."
"How?" I asked. "I mean, first years can't be have that much skillz can they?"
"It was not because of a duel," Dumbledore said, "but because the two connected three worlds that were meant to be apart. The magical tension between them was let out when they both got angry."
I couldn't imagine Wilby getting angry. Because the one thing worse than the meanest person in the world getting angry, is the nicest person in the world getting angry.
"They connected three worlds?" Annabeth questioned. "Greek, Wizards, and Roman?"
"Close," Dumbledore said. "But I do not think it is a very crucial detail. Something about those two, and Drew's sister as well, is very off. Drew, and Wilby too, though he doesn't show it, have exceptional skill in both combat and other kinds of magic. Dawn is above average as well, and miles ahead of her classmates in terms of studies. She is intelligent enough to match even Hermione Granger."
"What's the rest of the story?" Annabeth asked. "What happened next?"
It was like we had completely forgotten about Isabell, who was sitting there with her arms crossed and glaring at us.
"Well," Dumbledore said. "Word got to the Ministry of Magic, and they decided that the two could not be close to each other. I did not want to break such as promising friendship, but I could not argue with the Ministry. Both had their memories wiped, so neither remembered the other. When the Ministry fell in the Second Wizarding War, well, they couldn't do anything, so on the first day, I returned Wilby's memories."
"Then he started stalking her," I said.
Dumbledore laughed a big laugh, "Yes, she is quite an intimidating girl. Then he convinced her to see me, and I returned her memories."
"Wow," we said.
Dumbledore nodded, then his expression turned serious, "But I also have bad news." Then he noticed Isabell, "Oh I apologize Isabell, would you go see Madam Pomfrey in the Hospital Wing? Perhaps she could bring back your memories."
When she left angrily, I asked, "Why can't you do it yourself?"
"Because I took Drew and Wilby's memories in a different way. I believe the right word is removed. Not wipe or erase. I stored them in vials."
"Vials?" I asked. "You can keep memories in vials? What if you drink it?"
"Yes, you can. And I suppose drinking it is another way of getting the memory back into your mind."
I pondered this. Could memories be used in potions? That would be cool.
"So what's the bad news?" Annabeth prompted, interrupting my thoughts on dangerous and fun memory experiments.
"I contacted Chiron last night," Dumbledore said. "He says that various campers of his claim to hear voices in their head at night, urging them to do dark deeds."
We all gasped, causing what scientists later called The Great Decrease of Oxygen. "That could be what's happening here!" Piper exclaimed.
Dumbledore nodded, "Praetor Reyna and Praetor Frank reported the same thing. So far, nothing sinister has happened in your camps. Chiron has also noticed the sky darkening earlier than usual."
"I noticed that too!" Annabeth exclaimed. "At the lake yesterday, it got dark really fast."
Dumbledore nodded, "Chiron has his suspicions, and assume that you do too Annabeth. But there is another thing I may be correct about. The prophecy—"
Dumbledore stood up so suddenly he knocked over a jar of Cockroach Clusters. In a flash, his wand was in his hand. He raised it toward the right corner of the ceiling and bellowed, "Protego!"
The spell went through the ceiling and disappeared.
"Uh, what was that?" Nico squinted at the ceiling. "The paintings up there need protecting?"
"No," Dumbledore said, striding purposefully towards the door, "something has happened in Divination."
