Chapter 8

You were introduced to all the group members. They didn't look as rich as you expected. They dressed in regular clothes. Since they were vacationing on a ship, you assumed that they would come to dinner dressed in diamonds and black ties. But, instead, they were chilling in the typical clothes you might find in the clearance rack of JCPenny's.

The first group member you were introduced to was Annabeth's fiance, Percy. Annabeth seemed extremely proud and embarrassed by him at the same time. Like, he's super funny and hot, but he isn't the kind of guy you would call if you're on Jeopardy.

The second and last group member was Nico. He wasn't much of a talker. He had this aura of death. When Annabeth asked him if he wanted to introduce himself, he said, "I'm only here because I wanted some hot food for a change."

"Fair enough," Annabeth smiled. "Yes, that's Nico. He likes to keep to himself."

"But he's pretty cool. He's the encyclopedia of Mythomagic, although he is too embarrassed to admit it," Percy said.

"That's cool. Have you played Mythomagic GO? It's a pretty cool app, although it has lost about 97% of its original following," you said, trying to start a conversation.

Nico moved his greasy hair out of his eyes so he could get a direct view of you. You stared back, the dark bags under his eyes against his pale skin caught your attention. He flipped hair back in front of his face and excused himself, claiming he was full.

You glanced around, but no one seemed like they were going to mention that the hot food on his food was untouched.

"So, (Y/N), I would like you to retell your story, from the beginning, of what you know," Annabeth requested. "I think it would be better for Percy to hear it first hand."

You sighed, thinking that she was just testing you. If you messed up one detail, then she would think that you were making something up. Good thing you were telling the truth so you didn't have to worry about remembering a lie. After all, honesty is the best policy, right?

"I found a book on Wattpad. I started reading it, and this person that calls themself 'Leader' said that they needed an agent. I wanted to be that agent because I had something for school to do, but I was just procrastinating. This guy named Hunter is the manager of the mission and he told me to gain the trust of some people that were on the opposing side...which I assume is you guys? And he wanted me to convince you guys to join their side," you explained. "Wait, are you guys--like--drug lords or something? What are these 'sides' I keep hearing about?"

Annabeth nodded, her expression full of empathy. "I'm sorry, (Y/N), but I believe that it would be best if you knew as little as possible. What we are a part of...just knowing about it puts you in danger. We don't want to drag you into our way of life."

You sighed. "You guys are just like Leader. Leader gave me three rules: follow all rules, only trust Hunter, and don't ask questions. I thought you guys would be different. I thought I was picking the side that would treat me as a friend instead of a child. But, even you guys leave me in the dark."

"Look, (Y/N), what we are...you don't want to be. Being what we are is dangerous. It's scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways. Very few of us are lucky enough to make it to age twenty. Trust us. You don't want to be involved in it. We are doing you a huge favor," Percy assured you.

You sighed. "Fine. If you guys are drug lords, I guess your business is dangerous and I should definitely not get involved."

Leo had a stupid smile like he was holding back laughter. Annabeth had a perfect poker face while Percy looked hurt.

"You guys couldn't make it more obvious. The drug sales are probably what pay for this boat. You guys don't want to involve me because drugs are addictive. I get it. Don't involve me, I'm fine with that. So, if you guys are going to start making lines, I would like for someone to show me where the room I'll be staying in is," you requested.

Annabeth nodded and led you out of the room. As soon as the door closed, you could hear Leo's uncontrollable laughter through the door.

"I don't get it," you thought. "What other explanation could be there be?"

\_*--*_/

Within the room, you sat in silence, except for the ticking of the wall clock. Your brain hurt because there was absolutely nothing to do. No book to read. No paper to write on. Nothing. Your mind was racing too quickly for you to be able to go to bed. You lied in bed, your eyes wide open, contemplating your situation. The only thing you wanted to do was to explore the ship, but you remembered that Leo had mentioned that the weather was gusty.

Chapter 14: Stay in the room and try to sleep.

Chapter 15: Go outside and look sketchy.
