Chapter 60

"Were you talking to someone last night?"

You blinked, wondering if this is what Hunter meant when he warned you everything was going to plan. You couldn't imagine how this could possibly be a part of the plan.

"I heard you talking last night. You had a pretty good conversation going on and..."

You recalled how difficult it had been to get to sleep last night before Hunter had come. "Well, I did sleep like a baby. A baby that is super grumpy and can't calm down."

Leo's uncomfortable expression disappeared. He slightly smiled, considering your answer. "Ha, I guess yesterday was a crazy day for you."

You shrugged. You wanted to say something, but you could only think about Hunter's visit. His tips on the symptoms to show the crew...you weren't sure how you would work them into the conversation. You weren't sure if you should.

Unsure what to make of the silence, Leo continued to speak. "Or maybe being on a ship kept you up. Have you ever slept on a boat before?"

Tilting your head as you looked into space, you remembered something. "You know, the larger the ship, the less you feel the waves. But, this ship is relatively small, yet I haven't felt any movement," you recalled, looking to Leo for an explanation.

Leo's smile weakened. His fingers gripped his hair. "Wow, you are quite observant. Observant people like you get far in life. People with skills like yours scare me because I feel like they know more about me than I would like for them to know."

"You are great with compliments. I was almost flattered enough to forget what you were trying to distract me from," you smirked. "But really, it isn't like there is anything to hide. Why wouldn't I feel the waves?"

"Oh, right. Nice weather doesn't make waves big enought to feel," he explained. He took his goggles from around his neck and began to try to clean smudges off the lenses with his thumb. You weren't sure if he could see through the goggles since there were what appeared to be scorch marks on them.

"Yesterday...you said there were weather warnings about strong wind. You said the wind was too strong so no one can go to the sides of the boats," you reminded him. "That doesn't sound like calm water weather."

Huffing breath onto the goggles' lenses, Leo seemed absorbed in cleaning off the smudges. "About that..." he pauses as he huffed another few breaths on the lenses, taking his time. "Right, I was on the wrong radio station. It turns out it was talking about a place hundreds of miles away."

"Ah, you have to be careful about that," you commented. "But, I find it weird that I don't hear an engine."

"An engine? No, we don't have an engine. The ship sails by the wind." Leo thought for a second and spoke before you could begin to ask more questions about the ship. "Well, if the smooth sailing ship didn't bother you, it must've been something else... Maybe there is someone on this ship that's keeping you up?" He rose his eyebrows in an expant way.

You rolled your eyes. "Yeah, sure. What do I do when I appear on a boat full of strangers? I think about the guys and how cute they are," you sarcastically agreed.

Leo stopped working on the goggles' lenses and stretched the goggles around his neck. "From all that time you thought about us guys, I suppose you are prepared for this morning's breakfast."

"Hm?"

"Well, it's not right now, I haven't cooked it yet," he said, holding out his hands to show the grease and dirt on them. "I've been a little busy this morning."

"So...you're going to be the chef?" you asked, glancing at his work clothes.

"Yes. But don't worry. I know how to cook more than just Mac & Cheese," he winked. "I can also make hot pockets and cereal and toast...I'm a real catch."

You laughed to yourself. "I can see that. But, I mean, you wouldn't touch any food before washing, right?"

"Oh," his eyes widened. "Ah, I was just so excited to invite you to breakfast, I forgot I was so messy," he apologized. "But, si, yes, I'm cleaning up right after this."

"Don't worry about it. I'm sure staying clean all the time is a hassle for someone with your job. But, cooking..."

Giving a cocky grin, he tilted his head. "It's cool. I would like for you to come to dinner, but I don't to pressure you. So, if you had trouble sleeping last night and need to rest, you can do that."

You considered what Hunter had told you last night. He had wanted you to show symptoms of a bunch of oddly specific things, but he also said you could summon him with a ring. You looked down at your ring, wondering who you would rather spend the morning with.

Choice time:

Chapter 69: "Yeah, I'll like to go to breakfast."

Chapter 70: "I'm sorry, but I think I need to sleep some more. Maybe lunch?" Then summon Hunter.
