Chapter 26

You were almost calm enough to consider sleeping when you heard a subtle knock on the door. Eager for a distraction from your boredom, you slipped out of bed and tip-toed to the door.

"Who is it?" you whispered into the door.

A soft knock responded, though this time it seemed a little more aggressive. You noted the insistence and crept open the door. Sticking an eye between the crack of the door, you observed the visitor.

He wore a black turtleneck you would expect to see on a cheesy spy show. His black sweatpants were not flattering, but then again, you gave him props for trying. His hair was dark, sleek, and shiny. It was well-groomed and in a low ponytail. The long ponytail rested on his shoulder, reaching his stomach. His skin was the color of desert sand, yet was smooth like a marble. You kinda wanted to reach out and touch it, but you thought it would be better to know who he was first.

Before you could begin to ask who he was, he put a gloved finger to his lips. He pressed his other palm against the door, but you were so flustered you didn't think to fight against it. You backed away from him into a dresser as he let himself in, easing the door closed behind him.

He smiled to himself as he leaned against the door and looked at you. "You're doing a phenomenal job. The crew members are so focused defending themselves, they aren't even considering questioning you."

Suddenly, the scene all made sense. "Hunter?" you asked.

"That's what they call me," he confirmed as he walked into the light that streamed through the window. The moonlight lit his face. His expression appeared slightly off like he was holding something back. His smooth skin was no longer tempting to touch. "Of course they would trust you. You told them everything you know."

You shifted, grabbing the edges of the dresser behind you.

Hunter's eyes dropped, but not before you could see the gathering shine they had. "Tell me, (Y/N). Where did I go wrong?" he whispered, unable to keep his voice strong. "Why did you betray us? I thought we were...I thought you would..."

You shook your head as if doing so would make it all go away. You wanted to go back and fix your mistakes. "I have something to confess: I know everything. Before accepting the mission, I already knew about Annabeth and Percy...I knew everything. I was just afraid of breaking the fourth wall," you explained.

Hunter dropped his head, blocking it with his arm. "Of course. I knew that; from the beginning, you were the perfect candidate for the job. I wanted someone...someone that already knew everything...because anyone else would be overwhelmed and stressed. Unable to work." He paused, sliding down the door to sit on the floor. He looked up to the ceiling, tears gathering in his eyes as he spoke to the ceiling. "I thought you were perfect. I thought you saw what I saw."

"What did you see? I only saw lovable characters overcome obstacles."

As you stared at his eyes, you began to see the redness within them. "But, the Olympians...they brainwashed everyone to believe they belong in power. They have children--many of them--just so they can die while fighting to protect them. All those kids ever wanted was attention from their godly parents...so many of them die trying," his voice cracked, so he paused and regained his voice. "Olympus is corrupt. Us mortals don't matter to them. All they care about is their power."

You could truly see where he was coming from. All those demigods that died during the Titian and Giant war? So many of them were only thinking about gaining recognition and honor from their godly parent. And so many of them died as they fought. "Sure, the Olympians suck, but hey, what can you do?"

"You're right. They aren't going to change," he said, a smile growing on his face. "We have to replace them."

You could picture him fantasizing about the fall of Olympus with the gods and goddesses begging for mercy, promising to change their selfish ways. This idea fueled everything Hunter did. There was not a moment Hunter was not doing something that would eventually bring about the doom of Olympus.

In a half second, Hunter's entire makeup shattered as he covered his face with his hands. He shook with every breath, breaking apart. He forced himself to remove his hands from his face and controlled his voice.

"One thing keeps bothering me though. How did you think you got here?" he questioned.

You thought about it before saying, "I thought I was dreaming, but I wasn't going to complain because this dream is the most vivid and plot-filled dream I've ever had."

"Now that you know this is real, you should realize that our side is more capable than you thought. So if we can make you appear on a ship, don't you think we can also hear everything you say? Everything you hear?"

Your mouth dropped.

"So...when you said..." Hunter took a deep breath to collect himself. "What you said about me? I guess I was coming on too strong. I'm sorry, I was just so excited that someone accepted the proposal and--I really wanted to make a friend. I wanted to show how welcome you are and how grateful I am...but it came out wrong. All of it came out wrong, and it's my fault," he cried, cowering in the corner.

"Maybe it's because I threw you into the mission without forming a bond with you. I should have become your friend before I challenged you with the ultimate trust test. Maybe that's why you even told Leo, not holding back anything. You didn't care about me. You just wanted to become friends with Leo," Hunter sniffled.

Although previously you didn't even consider Hunter's feelings, you immediately felt sorry for what you had done. You didn't realize how much Hunter genuinely looked forward to your success. "Don't blame yourself. I was selfish, I didn't realize what would happen to you if I ignored the orders. Please, I'll try to make it work. I will fix this," you promised.

"No, (Y/N)...it's too late for that. The mission is already failed. Leader sent me to destroy all evidence of the failure."

"What do you mean?" you asked. You could feel your heart jumping.

"All of the evidence. You see, Plan A was to slowly convince the demigods to join our side because they are more useful to us if they are on our side. But, now that they will not join our side since they already know your intentions, they are more useful to us dead."

"What about me? I swear, I won't tell anyone about any of this," you pleaded.

"All evidence of the failure must be destroyed. That includes you, the agent, and--"

A roaring rage enveloped all sound. Everything was unbearably hot, and then nothing at all.

Chapter 3: Revive (This time, don't tell them the truth. Now you know Hunter is listening.)
