Chapter 14

Bored and unable to sleep, you jumped when you heard a soft knock on the door. You asked yourself who it was as you approached the door.

"Who is it?" you whispered, putting your head to the door.

The visitor responded with a long scratch down the door, refusing to name themselves aloud. Although the insistence seemed sketchy, you cracked open the door. Sticking an eye between the crack and clutching the doorknob with a hand, you looked at the visitor.

He wore a black turtleneck and black sweatpants made him look like he planned to rob a bank. His hair was dark, sleek, and shiny. It was well-groomed and kept in a low ponytail. His expression was ageless and his skin looked perfect. His skin was the color of desert sand, yet looked smooth like marble. You kinda wanted to reach out and touch it, but you thought that would be weird. Before you could begin to form words, he raised a gloved finger to his lips. He pressed his other palm against the door, but you were so flustered you lost your grip on the handle and didn't think to fight against it. You backed away from him, uncomfortable with his "this is my room" kind of attitude. You felt yourself back up into a dresser as he let himself in and eased the door closed behind him.

He smiled to himself as he leaned against the door and looked at you. "You're doing a phenomenal job. The crew members are so focused defending themselves, they aren't even considering questioning you."He smiled a greeting to you as he leaned against the door. "You're doing a phenomenal job. I can't help but smile when I think about how close we are getting to our goal."

Suddenly, the scene all made sense. "Hunter?" you asked."

Careful, you're not allowed to ask any questions," he confirmed. "I don't think you realize how lucky you were to have this opportunity to change the world. The side we're working for, this side is going to bring the gods to their knees. The gods will be stripped of their selfish ways and will be replaced by Leader."

Remembering that you couldn't ask any questions, you stopped yourself from asking what mental hospital he escaped from. Instead, you said, "I'm confused."

"Oh," he laughed. "You're still trying to protect the fourth wall? That's nice of you, but that thing is long gone. I already know you know everything about the gods. You know about Percy Jackson. Why else would you read something that's marked as 'Fanfiction' for Percy Jackson?"

"So you know that I know," you realized. "In that case, I don't understand why you are going through the effort of hiding things from me."

"The answer is simple: I had to get you interested. Even if it involved the cliche 'I don't know what I'm doing here' event, you got this far, didn't you? Besides, you don't know who Leader is or who I am. Have you realized our names are what we are?" Hunter asked.

"So you're a hunter, so you're called 'Hunter'?" you clarified.

He nodded. "And we call you 'ungrateful heathen' because that is what you are."

Your eyes widened. "Is that my first and last name or..."

"Ungrateful Heathen, you lied. You signed up and promised to serve us. You vowed to follow our instructions. But look at where we are. Chapter 14. You should never have ended up here," he scolded you. "You were blessed with the option to join our side and fight to change the ways our gods treat us. But instead, you chose to throw it away. You were mindless and selfish as you just threw the mission back at our faces."

You gripped the edges of the dresser, afraid of what might happen. You remembered the Terms and Conditions you had read back in Chapter 2 and wondered if reading them would have warned you of what might happen if you rebelled. "I'm not selfish. I don't know what I did to make you think I would betray you."

Hunter's eyes began to appear glossy as he continued to speak. "Tell me, Ungrateful Heathen, where did I go wrong?" he asked, his voice cracking. "Why did you betray us? I thought we were...I thought you..." he trailed off, wiping his eyes on his sleeve.

"No, Hunter, I wasn't thinking," you apologized. "I didn't realize I was putting more than just my life in danger. You're the Intel...I should have known you would be punished for my failure..."

"I deserve everything that's coming at me. I deserve it because I am the reason you rejected us," he said. "I heard that...you said I have mental problems...I'm worthless and I can't do anything right. Leader was right, I shouldn't think for myself. I can't think for myself or everything will go wrong."

You almost wanted to comfort him, but you expected him to pull out a weapon at any moment to finish you so you preferred to keep your distance and wait for help. "No, Hunter. I believe you can do anything. You don't need some divine leader to be worth something."

"No!" he protested like a child that didn't want broccoli. "I would never betray Leader! Never."

Despite your better judgment, you took a step toward him. "Hunter," you softly spoke. "You can choose your own path."

"No..." he miserably responded. "I have already completed the task. I have already done everything Leader has asked of me."

You took another cautious step toward him as if stepping in the wrong place would trigger a booby trap. "What do you mean?"

He sighed, looking up at the ceiling with drying tears. "Leader instructed me to never answer any questions, but I suppose it won't make a difference anymore. Our main goal was to get these demigods out of the way. Plan A was to make them join us. Plan B is to..."

Your heart jumped. "Plan B is to..."

"To--"

He didn't get to finish his sentence before a booming explosion ripped through the ship. You didn't have time to process the event before the overwhelming heat reached you. Everything was Tartarus then became nothing at all.

Bad Ending: Bomb destroys all evidence of failed mission, including you, Hunter, and the crew members.

Chapter 3: Revive (This time, don't tell them the truth. Now you know Hunter is listening.)
