Nico Di' Angelo: Filling the Void

When you found your doppelganger, (he/she) immediately became your best friend. (Doppelganger is someone that looks exactly like you but isn't related.)

Although people are wary about doppelgangers and the conspiracy that something bad would happen soon after someone finds their twin, you and Alex (your doppelganger) shook it off.

It turned out that both of you were going to attend the same school.  Students and teachers alike constantly asked if you two were siblings or maybe twins.  At first, it was funny and you would explain that you two weren't related.  After a while, it got old and annoying.  Eventually, you two decided to be twins.

After a while, both of you began experiencing weird things.  (Alex said that there was this old woman that watched (him/her) walk home every day for the past week.  You experienced exploding tacos and the feeling of being watched).  You guys decided that it was just part of puberty, even though you knew that it was something other than that.

Months later, a teacher pulled Alex into the hall and you thought it was weird.  You knew something was wrong, so you risked a suspension to check on Alex.  When you saw a monster standing over a badly-wounded Alex, you grabbed the nearest weapon (which happened to be an umbrella) and beat the living crap out of it.  (I'm seriously jealous that I could never take down a monster with an umbrella.  I still don't know how you did it).

When you got to Alex's side, you had tears in your eyes.  You promised yourself that you would never feel this pain again.  You promised that Alex would never get hurt like that again.

After Alex recovered, (he/she) told you about a place called "Camp Half-Blood".  At first, you thought that Alex took a hard blow to the head.  Then, further into the story, you realized that the only explanation for the lack of dates is because you are too amazing for mortals.  (That's my problem too).

Alex explained to you that the only reason that (he/she) didn't tell you about the camp earlier was because of family issues.  Plus, Alex wasn't completely sure if you were a demigod.

You and Alex decided that it was time to go to camp.  During the trip, you constantly looked over your back, making sure that nothing would happen to Alex.  You never wanted to see your best friend get hurt again.

But, like in practically all demigod stories, your best friend fought (his/her) last battle.  You felt nothing inside but hatred.  You felt like someone had cheated on the game of life.  You worked so hard to protect your friend yet a monster left you powerless.

You could've cried and continue your way to Camp Half-Blood, but you had a (stupid/brave) plan.

You screamed at Hades, cursing his name.  Alex had told you gods heard every time someone said their name, and you were going to make sure you get Hades' attention.

You laughed at how he needed to kidnap a girl to get a wife.  You mocked his loneliness, telling him that he would never be truly loved.  You told him that he'd never be comparable to his brothers.  You mockingly agreed with Olympus' decision to not give Hades a throne.  You probably sent Hades to bed crying that night.

After a few minutes of tearing his reputation apart, a crack in the earth appeared beneath you.  It opened up, like it was threatening to swallow you whole.  Hades expected you to freak out and beg for forgiveness and try to escape the growing hole that'd win in the end.  Instead, you jumped into the crack without a protest, eager to meet him.

You fell down right in front of his throne.  Your ankles ached from the impact, but you ignored them.  You stared right into the cold eyes of Hades.  He was terrifying, yet you couldn't see through the hatred in your eyes.

"I want my twin back," you demanded.

Hades pretended to look impressed and folded his hands.  "Wow, I've never heard of that one before," he sarcastically said.

"Release my twin, you old sot," you repeated.

"Honey, I don't plan on doing you any favors any time soon," he said.

"Then why did you invite me here? Do you want to talk about weekend plans?" you harshly asked. "Look. I have a soul. So just take mine and give Alex back to me."

Hades' scowled. "You talk as though you are invincible. Yet, your closest ally is currently working (her/his) way through my kingdom."

"Do you want my soul or not?" you offered, frustrated.

"Father," a boy said as he stepped from the shadows behind you. "She's just a girl."

"A disrespectful girl," Hades corrected.

You glared at the intruder. "Stay out of this."

He ignored you as he passed you to approach Hades. As he passed, you caught his scent of pomegranates. "Please, king of the Underworld. Leave her be: she knows nothing of her offences."

"She must be punished," the dark lord insisted, his frown deepening. "No mortal can just prance around throwing punches beneath the belt without consequences."

You were angry at the guy for interrupting. You felt you didn't need any help from him. You just needed Alex. "Boy. This is my life and I don't want to continue without my twin," you curtly told him before he could respond to Hades. "Now move along and leave this to the negotiators."

He turned to you, his calm dark eyes side eyeing you, his eyebrows judging you. "You're taking the mourning process too seriously. Tone down the denial of your reality phase."

"If you're not going to learn how to punish those who have wronged you, go play with some magic cards," Hades ordered.

"Dad, just leave her alone. She has suffered enough already today. Make an example of someone else. Here, I have a list of corrupt politicians-"

"You do not make the orders around here," the dark lord boomed. "If you can't handle watching children be punished, leave."

"She's not a child, just a misguided soul," he defended.

"How misguided can I be? I'm exactly where I want to be: with the big guy who will give me my friend back," you argued.

"You're so misguided you think being in the presence of the god of the dead is a sign of a fair negotiation," he told you. You began to open your eyes, understanding the bigger picture, gauging the power difference between you and Hades. You began to feel helpless, crumbling internally. Your straight posture slumped and your eyes dropped. "Oh gods, now you're taking the 4th step of grief too seriously."

"I don't want..." you drifted, not wanting to finish.

"See? She doesn't want to fight you anymore. She knows her place. Now let her go."

"I don't want to live without Alex."

Hades chuckled. "What a lost cause. Sounds like I should just let her become a lost soul, slowly losing her mind. She is already halfway there." He lifted his hand, about to Thanos snap that punishment into reality.

The guy ran at you full speed like a football player and tackled you. He smelt faintly like a campfire. The two of you plunged into a pitch-black hole. You two ended up on a field of grass, him on top of you. You panicked and pushed him off. "What was that?!"

"It was shadow travelling. It was the only way to get you away from him," he explained.

"Why do you keep getting in the way of my reuniting with Alex? Haven't you ever lost someone before?" you angrily asked.

He sighed, put his hands into his jacket pockets and began to walked away.

"Where are you going?" you demanded to know. "Do you know where Alex is?"

"I'm going to Camp Half-Blood. Isn't that where you wanted to go?" he looked back at you. "Come on."

You jogged after him. "You don't know what it's like to loose someone important, do you?"

"I know what it's like. And just now, I think I'm starting to understand what's like to fill that void."
