Nico Di' Angelo: Cabin Fever

You were famous the day after you arrived...but for the wrong reason.

I don't want you to feel embarrassed or anything, but you kinda screwed your social life over.

It was obvious who your parent was the moment that you entered. Poseidon was more than happy to claim you, wanting to start father-(daughter/son) bonding ASAP. You walked through the entrance with a glowing trident floating above your head.

Of course, as a newbie, you didn't know what was happening. Honestly, the only thing that ran through your mind was "Where is the food?" Hey, I'm not judging. You just completed a long trip full of monster hurdles.

At the time of your arrival, Percy was riding Blackjack above. When he spotted that glowing blue, he knew that he was no longer lonely in his cabin.

Percy and Blackjack flown to the ground, campers made way for the Pegasus to land. You immediately screamed and backed away from the horse. A blonde guy stepped out of the crowd and rushed to your side, putting a hand on your shoulder.

"Is she scared of me?" Percy asked himself.

You pointed at the large, winged-horse and screamed a little more. I was there, and I was honestly concerned that your eyes might fall out of their sockets. You...your expression was one of pure terror. I looked at Blackjack and saw a harmless, donut-loving Pegasus.

"It's okay," the blonde by your side said. "Yeah, wings, weird, I know."

Blackjack took a few steps backwards, uncomfortable with your reaction to him. Blackjack nickered, yanking his head up in down.

"I don't know, man," Percy responded.

You knew exactly what Blackjack had said-I mean-nickered. "He talks!"

"Well, yeah. I've been doing it since I was a year old," Percy said, confused.

A blonde girl emerged from the crowd and stood by him. She elbowed his ribs before saying "She was talking about Blackjack, Seaweed-Brain."

And that was when everyone found out that you were afraid of horses, despite being a child of Poseidon.

You've been going to therapy in the Apollo cabin for months, getting help from Will Solace. But, despite all his kindness and efforts, your heart still raced every time you see a horse.

You never told anyone about what makes horses so scary. When you were younger, you had nightmares about flesh-eating horses daily. (Or would you say "nightly"? I'm not sure).

Anyway, those constant reminders of the canine teeth of those vicious horses ruined you. I'm not trying to make you feel bad or anything, but you were kinda a mess.

The kids from the Ares cabin got a hoot out of making neighing sounds outside of your cabin and watching you react. (You might think "I think that I could tell a horse's neigh from a person's impression." Well, Ares's children happen basically be wild animals themselves, so they can neigh. (No offence to Ares children. The mean ones are like animals, not the nice ones)).

Luckily, the Stolls never messed with you. (Probably because Travis is in college, so Connor just isn't feeling it). The new pranksters didn't mess with you either. (Percy warned them not to).

Besides all the torment, you never left camp. Instead, you stayed inside your cabin most of the time. Even after Chiron talked to you personally about how you should be attending class. Percy was basically the only person that you ever talked to. He sympathized with your pain because he was scared of drowning at one point.

Your brother worried about you. He wasn't sure if you would ever make any friends. He had been inviting friends over to his cabin despite the strict rules. You met Annabeth, Piper, Hazel, Jason, Frank, and Leo.

You weren't an idiot. You knew that the only reason that Percy invited them over so often was because he wanted you to make friends. You were open to the idea at first, but every time you looked at them, you saw a bunch of pity friends. You hated pity. You couldn't look past their pity, so you could never think of anything to say, so you never talked.

After about two weeks of visits from the Argo II crew, they didn't come. You figured that they thought that you hated them (you didn't) so they stopped trying. Your heart jumped when you heard the door open. You looked up from the picture that you were drawing.

A teenage guy entered, his presence made your nerves calm down. You didn't even realize how worked up you were until he entered. He wore a jacket and a black shirt with dark jeans. He looked at you, his dark eyes locking with yours. "They weren't kidding," he said.

You looked away from him and back at the picture you worked on. He came up behind you to see what you were working on.

"Is there symbolism in that?" he asked.

Your eyes widened, surprised that someone actually noticed the meaning. On your paper, you had four cats drawn. One crouched and was green like snot. Its knarly fur was disgusting as it looked forward with a sickly expression. You named it "Plague".

Next to Plague, one sat tall with its ribs poking out. The gray cat resembled Golem from the Lord of the Rings. You named it "Famine".

To the left of the starved cat, a large, crazed cat positioned itself as if ready to pounce. Its fur stuck out and its eyes crossed. You named it "War".

The one next to it calmly sat, staring forward with light green eyes. The dark fur was neatly groomed. Out of all the cats, this one was the most welcoming. This one was the one that looked like it wasn't suffering from mental or physical problems. You named it "Death".

"I saw something like this a long time ago, I just couldn't get it out of my head," you explained. "These are the four cats of the apocalypse."

The teenager stared at the drawing as you continued to shade in Death's fur. The cats weren't labeled yet, you wanted to wait until the end to write their names.

"Sickness, Starvation, Battle, and Death," he said out loud. "That's the order, right?"

"Close. I prefer Plague, Famine, War, and Death," I answered.

He continued to stare at the drawing as you shaded in the cats' fur.  As he viewed your drawing of Death, he saw your interpretation.  He saw that you not only accepted it, but didn't see death as the worst thing.  That was the moment that you became his best friend.
