SGE: One True King- Soman Chainani
3 & 1/2 out of 5
Now this is going to be long and somewhat rambling, full of both prose and lists, so bear with, me. Spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.
There were a lot of twists in this book. Some were actually twisty, others not so much.
1) Rhian was the son of Rafal-You're probably thinking 'only Rhian'? But I read the 4 chapter preview and figured that Japeth was either a) the son of Rafal; b) the result of some magic that allowed Evelyn to get pregnat all by herself, with a) being the more likely.
2) Chaddick was the son of Arthur- This felt like a twist for the sake of being a twist, and very plot hole plugy.
Now let's talk about some "twists" that weren't twists at all.
1) Dot is the daughter of Maid Marian- I guessed this in "Crystal of Time". I'm not sure how I came this conclusion, but I did.
2) Japeth and Aric were/are gay and in love- I figured this out because of the letters Aric sent Japeth at school.
There were of course some things I loved. Let's go through them.
1) BABY MERLIN- One of the cutest things to come out of the last few years (and yes, I'm including Baby Yoda)
2) Dot- I LOVE Dot. Period. End of Tale. But when she turned old, and got more honest, just yes! LOVED IT!
3) HOPHIE!- To be perfectly honest, I have shipped this couple since the beginning. To see my Hort's wishes come true, well, I squealed with joy. There didn't need to be the implication that they slept together, though.
With good comes bad. Here are some things that annoyed me.
1) The Storian chapters- These chapters reeked of lazy writing. It felt as if Soman couldn't decide who to cast as the POV character so he decided to not pick a singular POV.
2) Kiko shipping herself with William- Not only is it weird for her to even think of the brother of her late boyfriend in a romantic light, he's gay, and so gay that it would take someone blind, ignorant, or homophobic to not see it.
3) The Hester/Andil shipping- Does everyone have to have a partner? I personally like the Hester/Anidil/Dot combo as best friends and a family.
In conclusion, SGE: One True King was a decent book, and excellent conclusion to the series.
Hey guys, thanks for reading! I'll *try* to update this weekly, but not necessarily a week between postings.
