Fangirl-Rainbow Rowell
4/5 stars
Before I start with the actual review, I have to tell you about my history with this book. I tried to read this book several years ago, when I was in high school. At the time I couldn't connect to the protagonist, Cath, and didn't actually finish it, which is rare for me. This time I devoured it faster than I usually do, and immediately started writing the first draft of this review. This review will probably be a bit scatterbrained because of that. Spoilers ahead of course.
Somewhere in the middle, the book "Eliza and her Monsters" by Francesca Zappia came to mind. There's a scene in the middle of "Fangirl" where a fellow fan of the series that Cath is writing fanfic on, and the other fan mentions the fic that Cath is writing and how much she loves it, not knowing she's talking to the author. In "Eliza and her Monsters" that's basically the whole premise, except Eliza's writing her own original comic, "Monstrous Sea". Go look it up. You can find it by clicking on the linked dedication above.
All the romances, both Simon Snow related and not, were sweet fairly realistic. I enjoyed the snippets of the Simon Snow books and fanfics that Cath and her twin sister Wren wrote at the beginning of each chapter. In some ways, The Simon Snow Series is like if Harry and Draco were roommates and Draco was a vampire.
In conclusion, I loved this book, and I don't know what was wrong with me earlier.
