City of the Plague God-Sarwat Chadda
The next about half dozen reviews will all be from the Rick Riordan Presents (RRP) imprint. So instead of summarizing the previous books in the series (because there aren't any, it's not even a series, at least not yet) I will be telling the all of you the mission of RRP. The mission of RRP is to "publish great middle grade authors from underrepresented cultures and backgrounds, to let them tell their own stories inspired by the mythology and folklore of their own heritage"* Mr. Chadda's heritage is Muslim, and thus his family probably comes from the "Fertile Crescent". Which leads into the type of mythology that the book talks about: MESOPTAMIAN!!!!
Here's the actual review: 4/5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. I didn't know anything about Mesopotamian mythology, so it was interesting to learn about that. Spoilers ahead.
I knew Belet was the ninja girl and thus (Yes, that's a real word) important right when Sik met her at school. At first I was unsure if Mo was dead. That could be because I was reading too fast, though. I thought it was interesting and refreshing that Ishtar was Belet's mom in all senses except biological. There seems to be some sequel bating, but it was so well done, I hardly minded. I found Daoud a pain in the ass. I mean who "works" at some place and doesn't do any work? His redemption arc was nice, though.
In conclusion, this book was wonderful, and I regret not picking it up sooner.
