A Change

Five woke in the middle of the mess he had made last night, in his rage and hurt. He was laying on the floor. He opened his eyes and just stared at the ceiling. What would he do without her? He could hardly breathe. He heard the brewing of coffee but it gave him no satisfaction.  Coffee didn't matter, he could hardly even think of the apocalypse. He ought to get back to his math. His limbs felt so heavy, as if he had been asleep for a thousand years and his face was tight from all the tears that made his eyes bloodshot. He forced himself upright and without glancing at the kitchen, began walking up the stairs. "You're just going to walk away while I'm making your coffee? How rude! You know I don't drink it." A clear, feminine voice asked. Five stopped incredulously in his tracks. Who in the world? He was too tired to care.
He sighed "I have work to do" He announced in a groggy voice. Clicking of heels announced the woman getting closer. She seized his arm and held it in place so he couldn't move. Five's jaw clenched and his dimple was evident once more. He finally met the eyes of the woman and all the aggression was gone. He just stared in surprise at the woman standing in front of him. Sea green eyes, pink lips, brown hair. A blue pencil skirt was replaced under the familiar white blouse that was spotted with black. Delores. How? He couldn't believe it. Tears pricked his eyes once again.
"Delores?" He asked in a cracked voice.
She responded with a confident smile. "No need to cry about it, dear."
Five laughed. "Right."
"Now come drink your coffee." She instructed before letting go of his arm and clacking her way back into the kitchen. Five just stared in amazement.
"Five. It'll get cold, and we know you don't like lukewarm coffee."
"Yeah..." His legs moved as if they were made of jello. He made his way to the chair and sat down. She handed him his coffee and her hand was warm and soft. He froze.
"Take the coffee." She said. He blinked. He took the cup and sipped it gingerly with a shaking hand. His face was definitely a new shade. It was terrible coffee. He resisted the urge to spit it out. All that mattered that she was safe.
