[40.1]-Epilogue

WICKED Memorandum, Date 232.1.27 , Time 22:46
TO: Jake Starell
FROM: Amelia Gard
SUBJECT: Your sister

She made it through by some miracle. I was so scared that she'd somehow be taken or, worse, killed by the Grievers. So many things had to go right, and so many things did. While I hated being right there for the ending, making her think I was dead, nothing could have prepared me for her reaction to Gally's death.

I'm still not entirely sure what happened with Peter. I was very shocked to see him with Lauren. But I have a feeling you had a part to play in that.

I guess the thing I'm most scared about is if we'd done the right thing and covered our tracks well enough. That took so much, and if Ava doesn't sign off on this last part, Lauren's not going to sleep through tonight.

I'll send you another email detailing her next steps and the rest of it.

Anyway, I'm going to respond to Ava's email; let's see if I can be civil.

RE: THOUGHTS ON THE MAZE TRIALS, Group A

Jake and I both agree. These results are incredible. While I wasn't and still aren't entirely on board with the last Variable, I understand its importance. The responses were very ranged and should prove some excellent data. But, even with everything we got, I still think we should have gone with it differently and without as much death.

While I'm shocked that Group B had more people in the end (I've already skimmed through those results), I'm still very pleased that we've gotten 22 from Group A. They've really pulled through. Thomas and Teresa have proven and will be proven to be extremely valuable in the long run.

And speaking of Group B, I have some thoughts on Subject B17 and how we should move on with her. Please talk to me tomorrow.

I agree with another thing in your email.

We are good.

RE: Your sister

You're right. I did have a part to play with Peter. I was selfish and couldn't bear to make Lauren go through that last Variable without someone close to her. You were going to be "dead," along with Gally.

Losing you and him was going to shatter Lauren, and if Peter wasn't going to be there, I can't even bear to think what long-term effects she would have.

But this plan, to make sure she's going to stay alive, might even be worse. Are you absolutely sure? I can't even finish reading Phase 3.

And don't get me started on how it's going to affect Peter.

This is what needs to happen. Don't tell me you're going to back out now.

I'm intrigued. Come to my office tomorrow morning, 8:00 sharp.
