Third person pov
Obito felt like the air had been knocked right out of him.
He captured Ethelia in a hug, letting the girl break out into a sob. He could feel the energy sparking off her skin, bouncing and arcing against him. It stung a little, but he didn't care. He pulled her into his apartment and kicked the door shut, not daring to release her as he let them sink down to the ground. He could feel her power aching to get out. It pushed against him, slamming against his body every few seconds or so. He kept his arms locked around Ethelia anyway, bracing his back against the wall so they didn't both go flying.
Ethelia's mind felt like it had been stuffed with cotton. Her dad had died. He'd... killed himself. They would have taken him down if there was a chance he was alive. How had they found him? Was it... Mark? She shuddered, bile rising in her throat at the thought of her neighbor walking in to see such a sight.
"It's okay." Obito whispered, taking in a shaky breath of air. He cradled her head as she sobbed into his shoulder, her walls dropping in rapid succession, leaving her completely vulnerable. "It's all going to be okay, Ethelia. It's okay. You're alright."
Ethelia focused on her breathing. She was not about to blow up this entire village. Her dad wouldn't want that. Her dad had... she couldn't even begin to think about it. She really couldn't right now. She didn't want to accidentally hurt someone. She'd already sent several police officers flying, and she knew her power was thrumming against Obito.
He held her anyway. He didn't move away and he didn't tell her to stop. He didn't get mad, and he didn't get upset. He stayed scarily calm as she completely crumbled right before his very eyes. Ethelia, who talked in bland tones, and was too sarcastic for her own good. Ethelia, who scoffed at the idea of friendship, and ate monstrous amounts of food. Ethelia, who was collected and levelheaded in every way.
How her dad could simply choose such a way out was beyond her. It terrified her to no end. Her dad was... he had been a strong man. After Ethelia's mother died, he stayed firm and supported his daughter. He stepped up and did what he had to in order to get them by. He took on two jobs and worked extra shifts. He went above and beyond just so Ethelia could be comfortable. She hadn't realized how much she'd taken him for granted.
Minutes passed with no signs of her calming down, but Obito sat anyway. He let her squeeze the life out of him, and he didn't flinch when he felt his shirt become wetter and wetter with tears. He didn't even wince when her power came out in a particularly big burst that made his walls rattle. The most he'd moved as to shift to the side, but only to dodge a picture frame that had slipped right off the wall. He simply brushed it and the glass aside, scooting them a little farther from it before going back to comforting Ethelia.
"It's all going to work out, Ethelia. You have me, don't you? It'll be alright." Obito assured her once again. They'd been sitting there fifteen minutes, but Ethelia hadn't calmed down. The Uchiha boy was fine with that. Her dad had... it left a sour taste in his mouth. "It's not your fault. Don't ever think that it is. We don't know all the details. He was drunk, and it's not your fault."
Ethelia took a few deep breaths, letting his words sink in. She wanted to believe him. How could she, though? She'd kept this from him, and then he'd found out, and it had crushed him. Why hadn't she stayed? Why'd she come here, instead? She felt sick to her stomach knowing that she'd left her father alone in such a vulnerable state.
What had he been thinking when he did it? What weight was heavy enough that he decided death was the easiest way out? Her becoming a ninja... it didn't seem like something that would effect him so seriously. It didn't seem like something that would make him spontaneously do such a thing. She'd never even been on a mission before! They hadn't even had a real chance to talk about it, and the options she had!
And yet he'd...
"It's okay, Ethelia. You're okay." Obito assured. His voice was grounding in a way. It kept her thoughts from spiraling too far, and for that, she was grateful. She didn't know what she'd do without him in this moment. It left her feeling cold and empty, knowing she probably would have blown her home up had Obito not been so adamant about them being friends in the past. Had he not pushed her and invaded the thick bubble she kept around herself, who knows what would have happened.
"He's... he's dead." Ethelia found herself saying. It wasn't particularly what she wanted to say, but it came out anyway. How long had she been sitting here, crying on Obito? She felt absolutely pathetic. Helpless in every way. Why was she being such a... a pushover? She should be stronger than this, right? H-Her... her dad had... she shouldn't be like this. She should be...
"It's okay, Ethelia." Obito ran a hand down her back, bringing it back up to the base of her neck and repeating the motion. Ethelia focused on the feeling of his palm sweeping down her spine, taking a few deep breaths.
She wasn't in danger. This, she was sure of. She took solace in it and added it to a mental list of pros in her mind. Her power also wasn't shooting out so erratically anymore, which was also a great plus. She hoped she hadn't hurt Obito too bad. She'd felt her chakra make contact with him. She was all too aware of how determined the Uchiha was, and how resilient he happened to be. He wouldn't let go even if her power killed him.
Obito was here, and she trusted him. Another pro. On the cons list, there was her dad being dead, however. That made her breath hitch and tears fill her eyes all over again. She unclenched her fists, which had been wrapped tightly around Obito's shirt. She hadn't even noticed, honestly. She took a few deep breaths. Her dad was dead. God... he was dead.
"The... note." Her voice sounded distant as she leaned away from Obito, no doubt looking like absolute shit. She didn't really care. She stared into his dark eyes, taking in the absolute concern displayed before her. Her hand went into her hoodie pocket. "He left me a note."
Obito's face twisted a little, but he kept his emotions in check reasonably well. "Do you want to read it?" Obito asked her quietly as Ethelia shakily pulled it out, letting it rest in the palm of her hand. She stared at it, her body trembling. She cursed herself for being such a wuss. But just- her dad was dead. He'd died. He'd committed suicide.
"I-I... I don't... I don't know." She murmured, because she didn't. She had no idea what to do. She was terrified of what she's see. Would she see regret, or hostility? Love, or rage? She had no idea what her father had been feeling that night. He'd been very clearly distressed. He'd even attacked her physically! There was... no telling what he'd said.
"I'll sit here with you if you want." Obito murmured. Ethelia nodded just a little, beginning to unfold it. She did it slowly, as though she'd rip the paper if she didn't. Obito was patient. He kept his hands on her the whole time, holding her in place. He acted as the anchor she needed.
She stopped halfway through her unfolding, when the paper was in halves, and she stared. Obito felt the air get sucked from his lungs as he stared, brows furrowing and lips parting slightly.
"I-It's... it's not for me." Ethelia whispered, turning to look at him with wide eyes. He met her gaze readily, heart thundering. "H-He left the letter for you, Obito."
