Chapter 14

Ethelia's pov

I don't know what's more infuriating. That constant hospital smell, or the fact that I've had to sit next to Kakashi Hatake for over an hour now. They set us on a bench the second we got here, claiming that all I had was a sprained ankle, and that it could wait. That left us sidelined while other people that came in after us were taken care of. It was quickly starting to get old. "When are they going to fix this mess?" I gestured to my ankle. "Stop being a brat and be patient." Kakashi snapped, arms folded over his chest. "You, sir, are the human equivalent to period cramps." I told him. He glared. "You're disgusting." He told me. "Says the human equivalent to period cramps." I retorted, ducking under his hand when he swatted at me.

We've been mostly silent this whole time, only Kakashi would let out a sigh every time I moved. I scratched my nose and he looked annoyed. Was he expecting me to sit patiently like him without moving? I was way too antsy for that. I was already anxious enough with this ankle deal over here. How the hell was I supposed to explain it? I didn't know enough about being a ninja to really come up with a plausible excuse. I wondered what they'd say, or if they'd excuse the fact that I had no cause of my injury.

I messed with my hair a little. Kakashi glared at it. "What the hell would you call that mess?" He mocked my ankle gesture. "This, my not-friend, is a hairstyle I like to call 'I tried'." I informed. He nearly looked amused, but seemed to catch himself, glaring instead. I held up my hands in surrender. "You asked." I told him. He scoffed at me instead. I turned away with a huff. Why's he gotta be so rude? "Stop tapping your foot." Kakashi ordered. "I do that when I'm anxious, asshole." I snapped back. "It's annoying." He told me.

"You're annoying." I snapped back. He grunted, looking away. I watched as someone with a slight limp was emitted to the hospital. Before me, who has her foot nearly snapped backwards. I felt an irk mark appear on my head, and I stood up. My gravity powers seemed to comply with my for once, helping my injured leg weigh less. Kakashi leaned forward in his seat, giving me a questioning look. "Hold this," I dropped my jacket on him. "I have to go make a scene."

I made my way to the middle of the room. There weren't too many people, so this wouldn't be too bad and life-scarring. At least that's what I told myself. So without a second thought, I let out the loudest scream I could manage, falling to the ground clutching my ankle. Kakashi shot up out of his seat in surprise. A few nurses rushed over, crouching down hurriedly. "What's wrong, dear?" One asked. It was an older woman, the one who'd told me to wait. I focused on not glowering.

"My ankle. I think I felt something snap." I groaned, forcing tears into my eyes. "Get a gurney. We're taking her up." The older nurse told the younger one. The girl nodded, standing up and scurrying away. "Wait here." The woman rushed towards her desk. Kakashi gaped at me. I gave a cheeky grin, winking. He gaped more. He thought I was some anxious pansy, which is true for the most part. But I know how to get what I need when I need it. I don't want to go home with a backwards foot. That would definitely raise some suspicion with my father.

A gurney was rolled up next to me. "Can you stand?" One asked. "I can try." I told them, rolling onto my stomach carefully and pushing myself up with my hands. I put my uninjured foot on the ground, pushing up with a grunt. I sucked in a sharp breath as a jolt of pain was sent through my foot. The older woman adjusted her glasses: something she hadn't had on before. "Oh my! It's much worse than I thought." She said as the younger nurse helped me onto the gurney. Kakashi walked over. "I'm with her." He told them. I let out a groan. He just had to say something, didn't he?

"Come on, we'll get her to a room right away. Another kid came in with a broken arm, you'll be sharing with them." The nurse said. I hoped they weren't annoying. "Alright." I gritted out. The pain in my foot was definitely worse after falling, but it was totally worth it. Now we can finally take care of this so I can get the hell out of here. I've never liked hospitals, and I never will. My dad had to come here a few years ago after overdosing on his medication, and it was a horrible time in both of our lives. Coming here forces me to relive those harsh months all over again.

"How did this happen?" The nurse asked. I opened my mouth to answer but quickly closed it. "Uh... I was thrown into a tree during training and hit it pretty hard." I lied. It wasn't totally a lie I guess, but it wasn't really the truth either. "It's definitely broken." The older nurse said. "I gathered as much." I mumbled. Kakashi stood in the corner of the elevator, watching silently. I took careful care not to look at him. This was partly his fault for pushing me to at least jog the entire time. That, and he's a dick. I would have let anyone but him carry me, since I'm stubborn. I also don't like him either.

They wheeled me down a really long hall, stopping near the end. The hospital smell was overwhelming so deep in the building, but I bared with it. Soon this ankle would be fixed and I'd be out of here. "So, what threw you against a tree again?" The older woman said, glancing at Kakashi. "I don't believe I told you how." I evaded, simply because I knew nothing about ninja. The older woman hummed, opening a door so I could be wheeled through. I instantly paled.

"What a coincidence." Jacob, or I guess Mark, said from his spot in the nearest bed. I groaned, turning to the nurse. "Excuse me, what level of hell is this?" I asked as nicely as I could. "I assume you know him." She ignored me, wheeling me to the other bed. Kakashi watched Jacob from the corner of his eye as he followed, going to lurk in the corner. "You could say that." I sulked as I was carefully transferred from gurney to bed. I sighed. "Yeah... Yeah, I know him."
