Chapter 12
Ethelia's pov
I found myself in what Rin informed me was a 'training field.' It was basically a clearing that had no grass, only dirt and broken logs. The entire place looked like a natural disaster zone. Trees were knocked over, and there were scorch marks on nearly every surface. I think I see some of those ninja knives in a tree too. What're they called? Kunai, I think. I don't know, the teacher didn't see the importance of teaching us about ninja tools. Which makes sense because we weren't going to be ninja.
We were going to be doctors and lawyers and teachers. I was going to be like my dad. I'd teach bratty children, and I'd get money for it. I'd find someone as socially awkward as I was and marry them. We'd produce the most introverted child this world has ever seen, and we'd be happy about it. That's what I wanted. That's what I planned. Now I don't have a plan, I just don't want to die prematurely.
"We're going to start off by demonstrating what chakra is. That's the first thing you'll need to do; Control your chakra." Minato said in an authoritative tone. I nodded wordlessly. "Tch, this is such a waste of time. We should just let her be a chakra bank and train harder and longer instead." Kakashi grumbled. "I'm game." I admitted. I don't like agreeing with him, but I'm not going to be petty about it. "That would be the easy way out. We're doing something else." Minato smiled, pulling out some pieces of paper.
"Oh, chakra natures!" Rin clapped her hands together, eyes sparkling. I raised an eyebrow. "Like water and fire and stuff?" I asked, looking at the paper. How's paper help anything? "Water, fire, earth, wind and lightning." Kakashi recited. "I have fire." Obito said proudly, puffing out his chest. I nodded. "I have water." Rin chirped. "Lightning." Kakashi grunted, glaring at me even though I've done nothing. Literally. "My main ones are wind and earth, but I'm working to master others. Kakashi here is working on Earth as well." Minato smiled. Kakashi nodded in agreement. My mouth formed an O.
"So what's the paper for?" I questioned. "This is chakra paper. Putting some of your chakra into it will tell you what nature you have." Minato explained. I raised my eyebrow again, something I'll probably be doing a lot. "Yeah! When I put chakra in mine, it set on fire and turned to ash. That's what told me mine." Obito grinned. "Mine got soggy." Rin said, smiling warmly. "The paper crumbled when I inserted my chakra." Kakashi said, sounding cocky. "It split in half back when I did it, and then it turned into dirt and crumbled away. For wind and earth." Minato explained. I nodded. That makes sense I guess. I wonder what I have.
I'm stuck between three. Water, earth and wind. I'm a pretty chill and relaxed person, so water seems legit. Sort of like going with the flow. I don't know why I think of of earth though. I just seem like an earthy person I guess. I only think of wind because of the flying thing. Other than that, I don't see how I relate to wind all that much.
"So how do I put chakra into it?" I asked. "Well, you hold it and try and push it through your fingers. Be careful not to push too hard. You could cause an explosion." Minato smiled, handing me a piece of the paper. I took it from his hand only for it to spit in half immediately. I inhaled sharply. "Was that supposed to happen? I didn't do anything." I looked at the paper warily. Minato looked a bit bewildered. "Try again." Minato tried to hand me another. I took it, and the same thing happened.
"It split in half again." I held up my four strips of paper. Both of them had split on contact. "Maybe her chakra is so potent that she doesn't need to push any out." Rin suggested. "Yeah, she probably has so much that she doesn't need to push it out." Obito repeated as though Rin hadn't just said it. I deadpanned. It's probably just broken paper or something. "It seems that's the case. Unless my paper is defective," Minato laughed a little. "Well, Ethelia, it looks like you have wind! It's fitting for you I suppose."
I nodded. Minato held out his hand, and I tried to hand the papers over, but they didn't fall when I opened my hand. I blinked, retracting my hand. The papers stayed floating in the air, bobbing slightly. "Whoa, how'd you do that?!" Obito awed, leaning closer to the papers. "I didn't do anything." I said, stepping back. I was right. The paper is broken. "I read about this somewhere." Kakashi said. "Me too! It's gravity release. The last person known to have it was the Ikusa, The Sage of Six Path's brother." Rin awed. I blinked. We read about that guy in class.
"The God of war?" Obito awed. "Wow, he knows something." Kakashi said in a sarcastic tone. I mentally applauded the jab, even if it was rude. "Shut up. I know plenty of stuff." Obito snapped, glaring. Kakashi sneered. "Yeah... couldn't he like, not control it though?" My eyebrows furrowed. We definitely read about this in a history book once. "No... he couldn't." Minato muttered. "So how will I?" I asked. "You have us!" Rin smiled. I sighed.
Wonderful.
"He knew how to use the technique I use, the flying thunder god technique." Minato smiled. "Cool. So what do we do now?" I sighed. "Yeah, we know she has wind." Kakashi said in a rude tone. "Well, Rin, Obito and I will go report to the Hokage! That, and we'll go check out the library to see what we can gather on gravity release. Kakashi, you stay here and watch Ethelia. I want you guys to do one lap around the village." Minato said. I felt myself pale. One lap? As in running? Around the entire village?
Murder me. Right here, right now, someone.
"She wouldn't last five minutes." Kakashi sounded horrified by the prospect of babysitting me. "Not even one minute. I'd pass out." I was not going to give myself the benefit of the doubt. I would be tired after thirty seconds, and dead by sixty. "You can walk." Minato smiled persistently. Does anything I say faze this man? "Let me walk with Rin. I don't want to be stuck with him." I scoffed.
"We need Rin. She knows the library like the back of her hand! And I don't trust Obito to keep on track. Kakashi is the only one suited for this." Minato made it sound like a dire mission, and that made Kakashi straighten. "I'll do it." He said. I let out a loud groan. "Kill me please." I drawled. "Why would we do that?" Obito sounded a bit confused. "I thought I asked you to be stupid somewhere else." I mumbled. I'd fallen to the ground and now was curled in a ball, picking at the grass in front of me. A depressing aura came from around me. I really want to experience death at this very moment and time.
"We'll be back later!" Minato smiled before turning around and walking off, Obito and Rin trailing after him. That left Kakashi and I alone. "Get up." He snapped at me. I let out a groan, sitting up. "I meant on your feet." Kakashi scoffed. I let out another groan.
Yep, I miss school.
~
I got the info on Ikusa off the internet! He was in the manga, I don't think he was in the anime. So I'm not sure how much Minato and his team would actually know about him. So I'm going off wikipedia, and we'll pretend everyone who knows their history knows who he is. Yeah? Yeah.
