Chapter Eleven: We Can Go To Jail
He said to come and meet him in his place; I had asked; aren't we supposed to go somewhere and have fun, but he hasn't replied since then, meaning there is only one option, which means I have to knock on his door. Seeing what Myles's condo looks like had always been my dream. Brayden had always ranted all about the cool stuff Myles has fixed down there, but I am expecting a date, not some excuses.
However, I am desperate, like every one of his fans out there, so I double-check myself in the mirror before exiting the front door.
"Can I walk you?"
Hearing the voice next to me, I impulsively flinch, for it came unexpectedly. Didn't he say I should go get him?
"How gentleman of you." I mocked, and his head falls back while he laughed.
"I wanted to surprise you and I guess I did." He defended himself.
Smiling, I hummed in agreement as we head for the elevator.
He presses the button and stands in front of me, shoving his hands into his khaki pockets and looking down at the floor, as though he is contemplating something. "And a little because I didn't want Bray finding out." When he looks up at me, there is a solemnity in his eyes: "We aren't officially BFFs or such." He puffs out, smiling a little before he continues. "But he is the closest I have to family. I don't want to ruin that."
In the silence that settles between us, while I try to think, the elevator door opens and it was empty. Myles hold out his hand and I took it unhurriedly. In the elevator, he says something that smoothens my anxiety when he laces our fingers while we are both facing the door.
"But we don't have to let him know. We can..." He faltered.
My eyes look up at him. His lips are slightly parted. He is still struggling with words, looking down at me.
"Go on a date?" I interjected with a playful question, and he smiles reassuringly.
His car is ready outside. He opens the door as a gentleman and helps me in by holding my hand.
While he circled towards the driver's side, I became drawn away by rapture. Thinking back to the time when I used to walk down the hallways of my school and only one person would notice my presence. It had always been like that and even worst after winter break was over, which continued till the last day of junior year. Who would've thought, I am worthy of being in a car with a young, handsome man who plays on the tv, particularly on a date?
I was told I was ugly, but Myles looks at me and smiled. I was told I smell like tuna, but Myles had hugged me a couple of times. I was told I will never be seen. Now Myles is taking me on a date.
The drive wasn't awkward, despite my silence after Myles joined in and grabbed my hand by the center console. I am too happy to stress over everything.
It was not until the drive started exceeding comfort minutes that I finally asked him about the destination we were heading to.
He tilted his head, scrunched his face quizzically, and say, "I rather not say."
"Come on?" I pressed, and he shook his head.
"No can't do."
"I mean, you ask me not to tell my brother that I am with you and now you're driving way too distant from where I know."
He chuckles while focusing on the road.
"Fair point."
"So, are you going to tell me?" I twist my body until I am facing him fully and fold my legs into the seat.
"No." He stubbornly persisted. "It would ruin the surprise."
His side profile is flawless. Every inch of Myles is carved and structured in outstanding detail. Some could say he was given extra attention while he was wired. He is a ten but was getting trapped by the wrong person.
Since then, I leaned my head against the headrest and inhale the faint fragrance in the space while watching him drive effortlessly. He would glance at me often, aware of my exploration, and smile. Our hands are still interwoven. It's becoming explicit that I am not the only one benefitting from the coziness. Just like that, I am at ease. I could sleep right here until we cut into a gravel route, and the drive become very unpleasant.
"I'm sorry." He apologized like it was his fault the road wasn't paved. "We are kind of trespassing."
Oh shit.
Alarmed, I let go of his hands and sat accordingly. "Where we are passing is illegal?"
"Kind of, but it would be worth it in the end. I promise." He said at my reaction when he parked in the middle of nowhere.
"What the hell, Myles? You have a reputation to protect, remember? I don't want Nelson looking at me worse than he does these days."
"That's why I come along with two hoodies and hats. No one has to find out our identity should, in case we have to run for our freedom." He remarked, and my throat dried up.
Run for freedom?
"Where are we? Myles?" I nervously asked, and he chuckles.
"You shouldn't worry. As a child, I used to come here all the time. And look I lived." He avowed, beckoning at himself. It kind of offered some comfort to me.
Despite the harsh midday sun relentlessly heating the atmosphere, Myles and I added some pieces of clothes to stay disguised as he had mentioned already. I wouldn't have gone on with the logic, but I was desperate to have his scent all over me and the only way was to wear his hoodie.
When I was in it, I didn't care about the temperature anymore even though it was big; it bundled below my thighs, and the sleeves sort of swallowed my entire hands. Myles had to roll them up to my elbows while he chew back a smile after catching me sniffing the material.
Embarrassed, I tail after him while he grabs a backpack and hangs it over his shoulder.
"So I guess we are going on a hike," I concluded, standing next to him, staring into the calmness of nature.
"Is it that obvious?" He frowned when he looked over at me. I crookedly watch him until he chuckled and agreed it was truly obvious.
"You see that hill?" He point to a place at a mild distance and I nodded. "It's the Hollywood sign and we will get there."
At the unexpected information, I crowed with joy and dashed through the trials while he warned me there was no running, claiming it will consume my energy too soon. That was correct, besides I rather be side by side with him.
For most of the hike, we absorbed the view instead of conversing. Myles promised we will have enough time to do that when we reach our destination. At some point, when we had to rest, we took some water, still not discussing anything. And when the break was over, he gave me the backpack and let me climb on his back for over twenty minutes. He promised it was serving as some sort of workout for him. He does not know; it was the first time I felt admired by someone.
The entire journey was thoroughly an hour. We reach a gate, and just like the do not enter sign from early, Myles ignores it and crosses over.
What the hell?
"I don't think we should. We can go to jail."
He looks to his right and left and says, "No one is here to find us."
"Myles?" I am not okay with this entire process, but when he holds out his hand, I couldn't resist.
"Come on, I want to show you a place." His voice was profound. There is no way I can say no to him.
I might not be from here, but I know for sure people go to jail for this kind of stuff. I remember Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis from the friends with benefits movie, and how they were arrested with a chopper for the same crime we are committing.
However, every concern and distress I felt in the past second departed as I confronted the remarkable image below me.
Stepping forward, I gasp. "Wow."
The view was stunning. I closed my eyes and soak in the quiet. When I open them back, I was thousand times more relaxed.
"It's like I can see the sum of LA."
"And it's fascinating," Myles said from behind me, as he steps nearer. "Nothing like I've ever seen." He added. His hands come around me, and he nuzzles his face in the nook of my neck. He had taken off his hat and hoodie. My heart is rolling in my chest. I stare down at the skin of his hands. I was stiffened and my breathing was the only thing I can control in my system.
Myles is hugging me from behind. Myles, who I thought the closest I would ever be with him, was those posters of him hanging on my bedroom walls. But now he is breathing in me, holding me detained, a very merry captive in his arms.
