❝A criticism – no matter how random or harsh – meant someone cared.❞
— ❁ —
LEE'S THUMB hovered over Lemon's promotional tweet. Lee was supposed to retweet Lemon's promo tweet on his account but he hasn't decided on a proper caption yet.
"I already sent you the caption written by our socmed manager. 'Yon na lang kung wala kang maisip." Tinapik ni Charlotte ang kanan niyang balikat. She settled on the empty seat beside him. "By the way, malapit na si Direk saka si Kat. Ready ka na ba?"
Pilit siyang ngumiti. "Yep. Ano bang pag-uusapan ngayon?"
"May storyboard na from Direk, so kailangan ng approval natin do'n. Mayro'n na ring locations from Kat. Pipili na lang tayo."
Tumango lang si Lee. He scrolled through his phone, looking for the caption provided. He copied and pasted it. Sighing, he edited some words. Nagdagdag din siya ng emojis. Napaka-formal kasi ng pagkakasulat. It didn't sound like him.
After sending the tweet, he muted his notifications.
Lee sat up straight. He pulled on the pendant. Guitar pick iyon.
"I thought you said you were ready."
Lee grinned.
She must have been messaging Sandro. "Okay, be straight with me. Ikaw mismo nagsabi kay Lemon. You know we've been discussing this for ages. Why do I feel like you want to back out now?"
"Manager, 'di naman sa gano'n."
"Kinakabahan ka? Normal lang naman 'yon. Wait." Charlotte squinted at him. "Is this about your ex?"
Lee just wasn't sure about the music video itself. Making it would unearth certain feelings he didn't feel anymore.
He doesn't cry about her while performing in public anymore.
Lee cleared his throat. "Okay, uh. . .
Charlotte slowly nodded. Nakuha yata nito agad ang pinupunto niya. "Nagki-cringe ka na? Is that what you're saying?"
"Mm-hmm."
"It's good that you get that.
Shaira is a college friend. She's doing this as a favor mainly because she's bored, saka last year pa kasi 'yong huli niyang MV."
The glass doors behind them slid open. Both Lee and Charlotte stood up to greet the director and location manager.
"Hmm, I actually like everything," puri ni Charlotte habang iniisaisa ang pages. Lee caught Shaira and Kat high-fiving under the table. "Ikaw ba, Lee? What do you think?"
Lee took the folder. He flipped through it until a particular scene caught his eye. The sketch wasn't detailed, though. Storyboard pa lang kasi. Tinuro niya iyong drawing ng isang babae at lalaking magkaharap.
Magkasing-edad lang kami nitong manager mo," natatawa nitong saway. "Anyway, for the first chorus and the bridge, I'm thinking of a waltz scene. I wanted to incorporate that sana into a scene where you're waltzing with a girl."
Shaira shook her head. "I already prepared a list, pero 'di ko pa nako-confirm 'yong availability nila. For the meantime, tatanungin na muna kita kung approved 'to sa 'yo?"
They used to slow dance in every gig they went to. Even if the band onstage was playing a rock song, he would take and put her hands around his nape.
Her warmth would always prompt him to place his chin on the top of her head.
And then, he would gently plant a kiss on her temple.
"Lee?" he heard Charlotte say.
Kuhang-kuha 'yong vibe saka message ng 'Iyo' kaya wala pa man, thank you na agad."
Shaira and Charlotte exchanged glances again before laughing.
Charlotte nudged Shaira, raising her brows. "Galing mambola 'no?" Ikinatawang lalo iyon ni Shaira. "But now that's settled, p'wede na siguro tayong mag-move on sa location?"
"Aren't we all, 'di ba?"
Like before, Charlotte skimmed through the folder first before handing it to Lee.
"So dahil same café, need po natin ng malawak para may space for the sayaw, sa equipment, saka po for the orchestra people na tutugtog kunwari sa background."
"Okay, thank you." Lee was familiar with most of them except one. After a few seconds, he found the café's account.
May nakita akong pics from customers before the pandemic, kaso baka iba na ngayon, e.
He turned to Charlotte.
Pa-thank you raw kasi tayo sumagot ng breakfast nila." Kinuha nito ang phone niya. She scrolled down before returning it to him. "But yes, I think ito 'yon.
"Kat, maybe you could drop by and take actual pictures?" tanong ni Shaira habang tumitipa sa phone.
"Of course, it's fine," Shaira mumbled, chuckling. "It's your video. Kahit ako ang director, I will still take your thoughts into account. Ire-request ko na lang siguro sa 'yo na i-confirm mo agad sa 'kin kung go tayo d'yan sa bet mo or not. That way, makakahanap agad tayo ng Plan B to Z kung may aberya."
Malalim siyang bumuntonghininga at saka, ngumiti. "Of course po. Thank you." He held out his right hand. "I'm looking forward to working with you."
Smiling, Shaira shook hands with him. Ganoon din ang ginawa ni Kat. After the meeting, Lee headed out. Tambak kasi ang notifications niya. Kaagad niya iyong inisaisa pagsakay sa van. He decided to call his grandmother, too. Junnie greeted him. In response, he placed his forefinger on his lips.
Natatawa siyang tumango. "Tumatawag kasi kanina, e, naka-silent ako."
"Hala, baka magtampo 'yan." "May dadaanan pa ba tayo, Kuya?
He reclined the car seat before lying down. "Susunduin mo ba si Sandro mamaya?"
"Mamaya pa pong ala-una."
Lee looked at his screen. Nagda-dial pa rin iyon. Nagtampo nga yata ang Lola Pasing niya. He kept calling anyway. "Pakisabi na 'wag na siyang dumaan mamaya. May lakad ako bukas, e."
Junnie chuckled heartily at the mention of his girlfriend.
It was true, of course. In most of them, he was either drooling or crying. If Junnie wanted to, he could extort Lee for money.
Besides checking the café in the morning, he had a gig scheduled in the evening. He needed all the sleep he could get.
Junnie woke him up an hour later. Nasa tapat na sila ng building niya. Kinuha na lang din niya ang bike. Lee didn't bother washing up or changing his clothes. It was an odd place for sure but he didn't know where else to put it.
It was his last plate in college. She never saw it.
The feelings Lee poured into that painting didn't just remain in college, though.
He fiddled with it until he fell asleep.
By car, Google Maps said the café was 30 minutes away. He was to blame anyway. He refused Junnie's offer. Nag-volunteer din siyang pumunta. Humahangos niyang pinunasan ang noo gamit ang kanang manggas.
Finally, the lights flashed green. Tinuloy-tuloy niya ang pagpedal.
Lee felt relief wash over him as the café came into view. Before approaching the door, he locked his bike.
Lee fixed his baseball cap. The door chimes chimed, gaining the attention of the brown-haired girl behind the counter.
"Goodmorning, sir, and welcome to Cafuné!"
—
LAURIE WOKE up with missed calls from her twin brother. Normally, she wouldn't have any problem ignoring them. That morning, she had no choice but to rush to Cafuné.
While waiting for the lights to turn green, she anxiously tapped her nails on the steering wheel. Malie was probably alone at the café.
Malie might have told her it's okay but the issue wasn't over for Laurie yet.
Laurie crossed the intersection with ease.
While parking, she saw a woman in red storming away.
"Fuck," she muttered. Kamukha kasi ni Karen. She really hasn't met Karen but Stefan had the audacity to attach a picture with his warning.
Laurie ran to the doors. Mukha ring umiiyak. Panicking, she went inside the coffee bar and turned Malie around. She quickly checked her cheeks. "I saw Karen. Okay ka lang ba, Mal? If she hit you and you didn't fight back, we could file for assault."
Malie's initial response was a bewildered look on her face. "Lauwie, I appreciate the concern, pero oki lang ako. Walang sampalan or anything.
Sighing, she let go of Malie. Inilapag niya ang purse sa countertop pagkatapos. "Sorry, wala ako dito. Nadamay ka pa."
"Wala namang nangyari, e," pagpapakalma nito sa kanya. "But now that you're here, p'wede na siguro nating pag-usapan 'yong problema sa budget?"
Laurie took her thermos from her purse. Siya mismo ang nagsalin ng Americano roon. "Do we have to? The bottom line is we need money fast."
"Agree ako, but how do we exactly do that?" tanong ni Malie bago kumain ng kapirasong leche flan. "Gusto mo bang magpalit ng supplier ng beans?"
"No, I still like our beans. Two years na rin tayong kumukuha sa Rosalia. I don't want to burn that bridge. How about we rebrand our socmed accounts instead? We could also add onto our menu."
"I could ask Theo for the photos. Getting a discount would be easy.
True enough, Theo still hasn't contacted her since they met Stefan in Alejandro's. Kabisado kasi siya nito. Alam nitong kailangang siya ang maunang lumapit. Theo also knew that if he tried to surprise her in the café, he would only annoy her more.
Laurie drank the rest of her coffee. "I just got here. Let me do it. Tapusin mo muna pagkain mo."
"No." Laurie was on her way to the comfort room when something caught her eye. She turned to Malie. "Saan galing 'tong painting na 'to?"
Her best friend chuckled softly.
"You didn't answer my question."
. . na-realize kong may point siya. I told him na dati 'tong art gallery."
"And?"
"Sabi niya, kaya raw pala maganda kahit medyo blangko."
Laurie always thought of Cafuné as an extension of her life. It was their baby born against all odds.
If anything, she felt grateful. A criticism – no matter how random or harsh – meant someone cared.
Besides that, the painting felt familiar from its thin to thick strokes that blended seamlessly. The negative space was also utilized properly.
And the one hanging on Cafuné's wall seemed to cost around 30 to 50 thousand.
She bit her lip, holding her curiosity in. "Did he leave a business card?"
"Oo pero 'di yata kanya 'to, e." "It's an agency's."
Laurie's eyes shifted from the painting to the card. "Charlotte G. Ocampo, R/C Records," she read slowly.#
