Chief Oconostota

Song: O Chamado da Terra (Oracao Xamanica)- original Da Chamado por Luiza Estrella

I have never met a Chief before so when Silver walked back in the room with him I was a little scared. This Chief was even bigger than Silver and his hair was this silky onyx massive of blackness. I thought back to the Onyx quarters. He must be the one that Malachite talks about the one that is against the winged beings.

I never meant to look up in his eyes but there I see it, dark onyx eyes burning a hole into me. I wonder if he is casting a spell on me. I hear they can do that. What if he has something to do with my wings? I quietly start to tip-toe backwards as he comes closer to me. I feel like a small creature to him, my heavens he is so massive and quite scary.

There is part of the woods that stops me and I hastily look behind me waiting on its long arms to surround me but it doesn't have any, how sad. Did they take that away from him as well these beings are cruel. What gives them the right to take things that don't belong to them.

"I am Chief Oconostota...welcome to the Reservation. Silver tells me that you are lost and need to find your way back home. Is that correct child?"His voice is very rough the sound of older age I presume.

"Child?" I look up at him in confusion. "I don't know what that is...but yes...I am lost and do you have my wings?" I ask him because I feel that he may know something about them.

His eyes narrow and I watch as one eyebrow slowly rises up. He looks at me but not in a state of confusion but as if he is realizing who I am. "May I ask where are you from again?"

"Orestes." I say with a whisper, not sure I should even tell him. What if he wants to go back and take over the land. What if I am making an even bigger mistake by telling him?

"Orestes," he repeats after me in a stern voice. "I haven't heard about that place in many moons child. Are you sure that is where you are really from? How do you know about the land...tell me more, who is the Chief there?"

"Chief?" I look up at him confusion. He must be talking about Malachite. "Malachite...he is our ruler. We obey everything he says. He is the one over Orestes."

His hand goes straight to his jaw and he holds it there for a moment as if thinking about what I just said. I wait patiently as he contemplates whatever it is in his head. He looks over at Silver and back at me. I'm not sure I can take it any longer with him staring a whole through me. He looks back over at Silver again. "Where did you say you found her?"

"We were climbing the waterfalls at Caspin Mountain...She just fell...like she was already at the top and just fell to her death, honestly I don't know how she is still alive."

"Caspin Mountain." He repeats and then looks at me. "Why were you there?"

"I...I..." rack my ever being to remember why was I there. "I was on a quest...and I flew through the rushing water and somehow I am here. They took my wings...do you have them? I need them back so that I can get home."

"Wings." He says it not like a question but like a conformation. "You are a Fairy...I have never seen another one in my lifetime." He walks around me and then once in front of me he smiles. "Silver turn the lantern out."

He doesn't argue with the Chief and does exactly as he is told. He walks over to the small flame and turns this little part and suddenly it is dark in the room. Except I can still see everything; at first I didn't know what he was doing but now in the dark I know my eyes are illuminating with the bluest of blue lights and I watch as both of them stare back at me in awe.

"You said another...you know about my beings...the winged beings don't you...you have to help me get back home." I plead with him.The light comes back on and I hurriedly close my eyes. Then slowly try opening them back up to let them adjust to the light again.

"I was never able to find it." He walks over and sits down on the soft surface where I was laying down earlier. He pats the area beside me and I in turn obey his request and sit down next to him. "Many moons ago I was out in the forest and there she was...pure beauty. Her skin was silky white like yours and her hair was the most exquisite golden yellow...a yellow that I have never seen before. When she turned to look at me her eyes was this soft amber looking color. She had this dressing made of the prettiest flowers I have ever seen and I wondered if they had made it for her on her Reservation."

"Anyway as it got darker and I was trying to find my way back home with her I happened to look over and her eyes...like yours...lit up the night as if she was able to guide me back home. On our journey back she gets talking about her land in Orestes and how she was upset that she too lost her wings."

"She was from my land...in Orestes...did she ever make it back home? Who was she?"I have to know more...I need to know who she was and was she ever able to return.

"We searched the land high and low...we walked the mountains in every direction but never were able to find it. Her name was Chrysoberyl. She was one of a kind that is for sure. However she was too unique and different and my Chief believed she was sent from the underworld...she had magic in her and no one could explain why her eyes glowed in the night...why her skin was so sensitive to the air around us and she had to stay in during the day because the suns' rays would burn her within minutes."

"What happened to her?"

"Unfortunately she was put to death...I stood by and watched as they tied her to the steak and set her on fire. They thought they had to get rid of her or she would cast a bad spell on the people and the land."

I jump up and start trembling; is that what they will do to me too. This is the end for me. I have already lost my wings and death is sure to come now. I keep glance at them back and forth Silver and the Chief and then back.

"Don't be frightened...child...I will not hurt you. I will not let anyone harm you. In that brief moment that I got to know Chrysoberyl...I had fallen in love with her. There is no way that she would have ever cast a dark spell on the land or the people. They were being foolish."

"Will you help me get back home then?" I ask yet again. I just want to get back to my land, back to my mum and da, back to  Scolecite. I have to return to my love.

"I can send Silver to help you but there are no guarantees child...like I said we searched high and low and all the between and nothing...we came out empty handed."

"I have to try." I look towards Silver. "Please will you help me?"

He looks at the Chief and then back at me. "I can try but like he said there is no guarantee."

I hastily walk over to him and throw my arms around his waist. "Thank you...thank you for helping me get back to my land."

He looks down at me and has this crooked smile. "Don't thank me yet...we got a long journey ahead of us. We will leave out in the morning you should get plenty of rest."

I watch as both of them leave the area leaving me all alone. I know I should be resting but the moon is out and this is when we are awake. I pace the room back and forth, back and forth; after so much time has passed I get up the nerve to go back over to the opening and look out.

It is really quite and I don't see any of the beings around. I step out and have a look around. Everyone is sleeping and I decide to leave them all alone. I see him sleeping and I watch as his chest rises and falls with each breath. I'm not sure how long I watch him until my eyes finally drift off.
