Book Crushes.

A short haired, blond girl, sat, reading silently in her cell. In return for not screaming in the doctors ears or rambling on and on about books or movies, they had given her a book to read which she happily accepted.
In a compound where the only form of entertainment was daydreaming, a book was a very pleasant change. But then again, her scientist had a habit of allowing her things that most people would normally not be allowed to have.
Such as books, candy, small toys, and other rather sweet things that Alyssa was incredibly thankful for.
Alyssa was rather pretty with light brown eyelashes that framed her hooded eyes, her normally toned and athletic build seeming a lot more frail that she was comfortable with. Her shoulder length, butter blonde hair slightly messy from how little care she was able to provide it. Her skin pale in comparison to the sun kissed tan she usually had. Though considering how long she'd been stuck inside rather than playing basketball, tennis, or swimming, it wasn't exactly surprising. Almost everyone in the facility was pale save for a few of the scientists who she'd determined were allowed to leave at the most once a week. Her scientist Theo was allowed to leave one weekend out of a month and she honestly missed him when he was away despite the fact it gave her a break from being experimented on.
Alyssa's rust brown eyes scanned across the pages of her book, growing ever wider at every single sentence she read until she paused to reread the part she had just read to make sure she was actually reading it correctly.
"Nooooooo, how dare you, heathen?!" Alyssa yelled at a character in the book which shattered the eerie silence around her, placing a hand over her heart at the scandalizing reveal of a secret villain.
"Shut up!" A very grumpy voice groaned from the cell next to her own, causing Alyssa to jump at the sudden sound.
Nobody ever really talked to her in this cellblock due to the fear of being punished by the guards that constantly patrolled the halls.
"Sorry!" Alyssa whisper yelled, brushing back a piece of her hair that had fallen into her face but her gaze did not leave the pages of her book as she replied.
He would eventually leave her alone and she really didn't feel like talking if all he was going to do was be rude.
"What are you yelling about?" The voice grumbled after a moment which surprised Alyssa at his sudden spike in curiosity. She'd assumed he would simply scold her for being loud and go back to sleep or something.
"A very amazing book!" Alyssa yelled excitedly, gaze finally raising to the wall in front of her when she realized his tone had softened.
"What book?" The male questioned which caused a smile to creep onto Alyssa's face at finally having somebody to talk to that wasn't her scientist, Theo.
Alyssa began to describe the book she was reading in excruciating detail, leaving nothing out... Except the title... Which she eventually gave at the very end of her rant. Speaking as though she were a saleswoman, attempting to sell the poor stranger on the whole book franchise as a whole.
The boy went silent for a moment, causing Alyssa to momentarily wonder if she had imagined the entire exchange before the male finally replied in a sad voice.
"A girl I knew used to read that series.... She wanted to marry the main dude." A giggle escaped Alyssa's lips at his words, feeling personally attacked by the fact she too had a major crush on the main character's love interest.
"Same though!" Alyssa laughed loudly as she gently laid the book down, marking the page with her blanket before she turned her full attention to her new friend.
"The main girl is such a strong willed character and the male lead... Don't even get me started on how hot he is. He's sexy and confident but let's her live her life the way she wants! He makes her feel beautiful but powerful at the same time. I want a man like that!" Alyssa sighed dreamily as she closed her eyes and leaned her head back with a large smile, mind wandering to Theo for a moment but she brushed off the thought before she even ATTEMPTED to look deeper into why he popped into her head.
"You're pretty cheerful aren't you." The male chuckled quietly at the girl's excitement, Alyssa opening her eyes to lean her head against the cool wall next to her as she gazed down at her book lovingly.
"Of course! I haven't been able to touch this book in over five years and it gives me some semblance of being a normal teenage girl again. I needed this amazing and beautiful book! And my husband is in this book so that makes it so much better!" Alyssa gushed as she hugged her closed book to her chest, heart warm at the memories of reading the book for the first time when she was only fourteen years old.
The voice chuckled once again before he paused for a moment, seeming to think something over before he took a deep breath.
"I'm Blake." He said after a while, his words causing Alyssa to falter a bit at the familiar name but she tried to shake it off, knowing it was too common of a name to start hoping for anything.
There was no way this was the Blake from her past... But the voice sounded oddly familiar and her friend, Blake had been rather grumpy sometimes. Though just because she would be happy to see a familiar face doesn't mean she wouldn't be crestfallen at the thought of one of her friends being stuck in here too. She knew she had caught a lucky break when Theo was assigned to her, most scientist weren't so kind.
"Blake?" Alyssa asked in a soft voice, eyes distant at her mental battle over the possibility of this being the same Blake she knew so long ago.
"Yeah... Is that a problem?" Blake questioned with a suddenly rather interested voice, seeming slightly defensive about the question as if he were expecting her to make fun of his name.
Alyssa was silent as she fought against the tears that threatened to spill as the memories of all that she'd lost four years ago flooded her mind. She was robbed of so much... She'd never even had a boyfriend, for goodness sakes. She didn't get to go to her friend Blake's eighteenth birthday or be there for any of her friend's graduations.
"No... I... Just had a friend named Blake... I'm Alyssa." Alyssa murmured after a moment, trying to force her voice to sound bubbly once again so that she wouldn't end up offending him with her reminiscing.
The silence that followed Alyssa's words were deafening and she momentarily wondered if she had scared her only human interaction within the cell block away.
"...Blondie?" Blake asked after a moment, hope edging his voice which caused Alyssa to gasp as a flood of contradicting emotions swirled through her mind.
"It IS you! I missed you so much!" Alyssa exclaimed happily, her brown eyes suddenly filling with tears at the realization that this man was in fact her old friend.
"They told me you died!" Blake said, sounding like his old self again. Alyssa couldn't believe she hadn't recognized him earlier... But then again, it had been four years... And Blake sounded so... Different ... Broken, almost. Maybe she hadn't noticed the similarities in their voices due to how long it had been... Or perhaps she was in denial at the realization that maybe more of her friends were kidnapped than just her.
"Not yet." Alyssa replied playfully, hand resting on the wall as she smiled lightly, imagining that he was on the other side doing the same thing.
The two talked for hours, catching up on the events that had transpired over the past four years. Although they didn't have much to catch up on in that category besides gossiping about their scientists and about guards throughout the compound.
They mostly talked about how much they missed their friends. They laughed about the past and about a ship that the two had when they were younger.
"I wonder if Esther and Kent ever got together." Alyssa mused sadly, thinking of her once best friend, Esther and all the memories of staying up late while talking about Esther's small crush on Kent.
"I hope so. But I doubt it. She wasn't interested in him." Blake murmured which caused Alyssa to nod in agreement before she realized that he couldn't see her.
"You think Joe and Nathan are dating still?" Alyssa asked after the silence stretched on for too long, causing an awkward chuckle to escape Blake much to her surprise.
"Unless is being kidnapped changed his plans... Well... Never mind..." Alyssa cocked an eyebrow at Blake's response, finding it odd that he didn't want to discuss the relationship of two people they hadn't seen in over four years.
"Hey, can you read to me?" Blake questioned, sounding almost embarrassed by the question but his distraction seemed to work as Alyssa proceeded to nod again before groaning quietly to herself.
"Yeah, sure!" Alyssa agreed rather quickly as she flipped her book back open, clearing her throat before she began to read her book aloud for her friend.
Blake leaned back on the bed listening to the story silently, eyes closed as he focused wholly on her voice.
The usually eerily silent cell block was filled with Alyssa's high voice, reading the book clearly and slowly for dramatic affect. Blake was silent throughout, aside from gasping occasionally at the shocking reveals in the book as his only form of sound in the hours that he spent listening to her read.
When the book was done Alyssa closed the book, feeling very emotional as she once again hugged it to her chest, realizing why this had been her favorite book for the longest time.
"Woah.... Hey, Blake?" Alyssa called softly, hand raising to the wall once again as she waited patiently for a reply.
Soft snores signaled the male had fallen asleep sometime during her story had ended but it didn't upset her. She giggled before laying back on the bed, yawning softly as she gazed up at the ceiling.
Another soft yawn escaped her lips as her brown eyes fluttered closed, the day's previous events rapidly draining her energy as she fell into a restless slumber.
_ -*- _
Esther yawned as she rolled over onto her side, completely and utterly bored out of her mind as she lay on her rickety bed.
The beeps of the machines in the laboratory not far from her room were annoyingly loud, making it impossible to sleep. She had recently been transferred to a different cell block for what she hoped was a temporary stay, due to her scientist being away on a mission.
Her lower back length, mousy brown hair had been hastily thrown into a braid before the guards had come to drag her away to keep it from her eyes. She needed to see where she was going and further familiarize herself with the facility for when David inevitably helped her escape. She couldn't wholly on his directions and expect not to be a hindrance to the operation... Though it'd been two years since he last promised to help her escape and it had yet to happen... She still remained on guard in case he sprung the escape plan on her spontaneously.
A yawn escaped her lips as her eyes instinctively flicked to where her wall clock was in her old cell, only for it of course to not be there. This wasn't her cell... She didn't know why she expected everyone else to have a yellow and bronze wall clock in their own cells though she had guessed her lack of sleep was the cause of her confusion.
To say she was exhausted was an understatement, but the person in the next cell was playing with a small rubber ball. Every time that stupid ball would hit the wall Esther just got more annoyed, her rage focusing on her fellow prisoner rather than the beeping of the machines that had been the previous cause of her exhaustion.
"Can you stop?" Esther sighed with a roll of her bright green eyes, growing increasingly irritable when the sound continued despite her words.
"Nope." Came the quick reply, further enraging the young woman who gave a small huff as she attempted to cover her ears to soften the sound to no prevail.
"Why not?" Esther snapped out, glare focusing on the wall where she knew the source of her annoyance lay.
"Because I don't want to." The voice said, causing Esther to release a sigh of exasperation at her temporary roommate's childish behavior. Something about the annoyance's voice was... Familiar...But she couldn't completely tell just from the voice what the person's gender was due the slightly husky tone they had, so there was no telling where exactly Esther knew them from just from hearing their voice alone.
"So, what're you in for?" The person questioned before bouncing the ball off of the wall connecting their cell to Esther's once again.
"Pushed someone off of a roof and delivered a bad joke. The pun is what got me arrested. What about you?" Esther replied sarcastically, wanting nothing more than to distract her acquaintance from their annoying game so that she could have some peace and quiet.
"Got too lazy and spent a whole week watching YouTube in my room. SWAT came and took me away... And here we are." The thudding of the ball stopped as the person paused for a moment, much to Esther's relief as the light brown haired woman settled back on her bed to relax finally.
"I miss watching YouTube in my pajamas." Esther's neighbor continued with a soft sigh before the ball hit the wall once more, Esther slamming her head against the hard cot with an annoyed expression at the realization that this person just wouldn't stop.
"Same here." Esther muttered, rubbing her eyes wearily as she realized that the only way she would probably get some peace is if she actually kept this person entertained.
"Huh. I'm Boopsy." The voice said, causing Esther to snort quietly at the ridiculous name. She knew of course that it wasn't this person's real name but how they came up with it made her curious, but not curious enough to question it.
"Code name. Very funny. I'm Moo." Esther smirked, her old nickname from church camp bringing a sense of nostalgia to the now twenty one year old girl.
" I like you." Boopsy gave a soft giggle at Esther's nom de plume, the sound of the ball falling silent as the person realized they had someone to talk to now.
" Yeah you're pretty decent. Annoying... But decent." Esther closed her eyes as she enjoyed the only sounds being the machinery from a nearby laboratory. It was still annoying but at least she got what she wanted by talking with the very loud Boopsy.
" That I am.... Oh, hello guardy poo." Boopsy laughed as a dark haired guard walked past Esther's door, towards Boopy's where he instantly unlocked the large door with his monarch butterfly tattoo.
Esther peeked out the tiny window to see a tall, thicker shaped, person with dark brown hair being dragged away.
" Bye, Boopsy!" Esther yelled after the Boopsy, watching in amusement as the guards all but dragged the limp person away.
'' See ya later, Moo!" Boopsy called over their shoulder before the guard opposite of the dark haired guard forced their head forward again, whispering something into their ear that instantly made them walk rather than being dragged.
Esther lay down on her bed again before she once again fell into a coma of boredom, almost missing the distraction from the mysterious Boopsy. Her eyes closed as she breathed a soft sigh, the beeping of the machinery keeping her awake but not distracting her from her thoughts.
She wanted nothing more than to be back in her much more spacious cell that she had grown so accustomed to... But she knew her scientist had to move her as he was away on a mission and the guards would not be as kind to her if she were left alone. She was always bullied for the special treatment her scientist gave her and she knew the moment she didn't have his protection, the guards would make her life hell. More than it already was.
She was safer in this loud, dark, cell and she knew it.
Didn't mean she wouldn't complain when he got back, though.
_ -*- _
Boopsy smiled at the guard, giving him a flirtatious wink as they openly checked him out, hazel eyes taking in his very lean yet muscular form.
The male was rather attractive with a high and tight hair cut, the top grown out more than was usually allowed for guards but he'd been working there long enough they probably waved the regulations for now. He was just a bit taller than Boopsy who stood at 5'8, making the male next to Boopsy around 5'10. He had more of a lean figure compared to the other guard who was a large mass of muscles though that didn't mean he was skin. He was very athletic in stature as the guards were subjected to training at least once a day for around two hours to keep up with the mass amount of patients within the compound.
They knew from previous conversations with this guard... Kai, that the training was mandatory for every guard within the facility though in their free time a few would do a bit of an extra workout just to let off some steam. But then again, it's not like there was much else to do around the compound, anyway.
A small smirk graced his lips when he noticed Boopsy's wandering eyes but he forced it away, knowing that if his partner saw him reacting, he would probably grow suspicious.
" You're adorable." Boopsy booped his nose with a free hand which cause his cheeks to bloom with red as he gave them a shy smile.
" Ignore it, it does this all the time." A snoody looking female scientist snorted as the two guards dragged Boopsy into a laboratory.
" Excuse me? It!? And I do not! I only do this when the guards are hot! It's not my fault you hire so many hot guys. And I prefer they as a pronoun not it." Boopsy argued as they shot the raven haired guard a wink, the male looking down shyly to avoid their gaze for fear of his smile growing.
" Strap them down." The scientist snapped, her green eyes full of annoyance as she glared at Boopsy who gave a flirtatious wink in response.
" Kinky." Boopsy teased as the much more muscular, red haired, guard, began to strap down Boopsy's wrists and waist, looking extremely annoyed at the fact that Boopsy was still speaking.
"Where's Igor?" Boopsy questioned as they searched the room for Doctor Banner, looking a bit crestfallen when he was nowhere to be found which was rare. Anywhere Doctor Fredrico was, there was Banner. He often sat in and chatted with Boopsy while Doctor Fredrico worked, though it seemed that neither were there at the moment.
The spiked crown was lowered over Boopsy's head by the red headed male while the raven haired guard stood back with a guilty expression on his handsome face.
" Shut up. Now, Lightning... Let's get started." The woman threw a switch sending bolts of electricity into Boopsy's body which made them release a scream of pain.
With a heavy breath Boopsy's vision started to fade to black as they passed out, the pain being too much for their already weak body.
The last thing they saw was their real scientist, Doctor Fredrico running towards the woman with an angry expression before Boopsy's eyes fluttered shut.
Yeah there we go. Sorry I know it sucks....
