Chapter 2: The Gladers

The boy just stood there, staring, in complete shock. Someone yelled down "Hey Newt! What's going on? You fall asleep?"

"Naw man, I bet the Greenie is a shucken pretty boy an' Newt took one look and fell in loooove!"
A burst of laughs rippled down into the cage. The commanding voice from earlier called out.

"NEWT! Snap out of it, what's going on??"

The boy in the cage blinked and looked up, a look of confusion still written on his face.

"Its...its a girl! It's a bloody girl! A..a..shuckn' SHE-Bean!! They sent a Shanket!" He sounded confused.

His words caused an instant up rawer from the other boys standing above her.

"A girl?"

"What she look like?"

"I can't see!"

"I want to see the shucking girl!"

"MOVE! I WANNA SEE!"

"Is she hot? I bet she's hot!"

"10 bucks she has a bangin' body!"

"DUDE I CALL DIBS!"

"No way man, I saw her first! She's mine!"

"No you shank, you can't even see her!"

"A girl, wonder if the creators want us to procreate?!"

"Nice!"

A few high fives were heard. Everything these guys said shot more fear through her already terrified body. She couldn't stop shaking, from the wet, the cold, the fear and now the absolute disgust! Against the girl's will, tears leaked over her lashes and slid down her grimmy and bloody face. Another whimper escaped her lips. She was frustrated with herself for crying. Why couldn't she be like the girl heroes in the books and movies?

I guess this is my reality and not a story. I can remember book plots but not why I read the book or where I read it!

"SLIM IT!" yelled the loud voice again, he must be their leader, because the ruckus died down again. "Newt, bring the She-Bean up!"

The boy in the cage with her looked back down at the girl. He took a small timid step forward, into the beam of sunlight. He had long shaggy golden blond hair, when the sun hit his hair there was a little red to it, he had big warm chocolate brown eyes. Something behind the mental wall tried to push out. He was tall and thin but with obvious muscle, from hard physical work. He also had a kind smile, almost shy.

He took another cautious step forward. The terrified girl pulled her knees even tighter to her chest and took a sharp breath in. Just because his eyes may seem familiar doesn't mean she trusted him. The boy raised his hands quickly in defense, he slowly crouched down, getting to her level, but still keeping his distance. The personal space he gave made her slowly loosen the tight hold on her knees. He didn't seem like he was going to hurt her. At this moment, anyways. He lowered his arms and rested them on his legs, he tilted his head to the side a bit, frowning slightly, like he was trying to remember something. He blinked and shook his head with a small sigh.

"We aint gonna hurt ya" The blond boy said quietly. He talked differently than the others, he had an accent. It was British. He had a British accent.

How do I know that?

He slowly extended his right hand forwards.

"I promise we aint gonna bloody hurt ya, Greenie. Come on, I'm sure you want out of The Box. No one likes it down here."

The girl looked at him still absolutely terrified, no idea who she was, where she was, why she was here surrounded by a bunch of leering boys. But the British boy seemed different from the rest, not just in his accent. He seemed gentle, he didn't make any sudden moves, didn't say anything rude or suggestive. He just smiled calmly at her, like he was dealing with a scared wild animal. He had probably done this before, dealing with scared kids. She slowly extended a shaking hand towards his outstretched one. He was studying her face, his eyes traveled up to her forehead, his frown deepened, and his eyebrows pulled together in the middle. He wrapped his big calloused hand around her little one, slowly and gently pulled her to her feet.

She stumbled a little; her head was still pounding from smashing it on the top of the box and passing out, along with whatever she was drugged with. Still feeling dizzy and sick to the stomach, she stumbled into the guy a little.

"Hey, hey. It's ok She-Bean. I got ya. You'll be okay. Day one. We've all been there. Come on, let's get out of this shuck stinking box!" She just nodded her head, terror in her wide eyes as she looked above her, at the boys all gaping down.

"Hey Gally, lower the rope, she's bleedin' and will need some help."

The boy named Gally, was a huge kid with a scowl on his face. Tall and wide, lots of muscle, short cropped blond hair, a big nose and these eyebrows...they looked like eagle's wings trying to fly off his face.

Did he pluck them or was he just born this way?

Gally threw a rope that looked like a vine, over the side into the cage. The blond boy, named Newt, steadied her and helped put her foot in the loop at the bottom. She was pulled out quickly.

"Shuck, She-Bean is light!"

As soon as she was within arms reach, hands grabbed at her. She screamed when the hands grabbed anything they could, and didn't stop. The blond hulled himself out of the box with the help of a tall muscular dark skinned boy. They both looked over when they heard her scream. They pushed boys out of the way to get to the front of the rowdy crowd. The girl was curled up on the grass, while hands continued to grab and touch every part of her they could reach, her clothes, hair, arms and any other body part they could.

"Hey! Slim it shanks! Enough!" A loud voice bellowed, the voice was clearly angry.

The grabby hands slowly let go and the crowd of boys slowly backed away. Newt shoved a few boys back with a growl and the dark skinned boy turned to face the crowd.

"What the shuck is your problem?" Alby snarled at the crowd of boys.

Most of the boys looked down in shame and embarrassment, some faces turning red.

"Ya never seen a shuck girl before?"

"Nah, Alby not that I can remember! It's a welcomed sight! She's hot. Definitely wouldn't mind touchin' her again." Chuckled one boy with short brown hair and a smooth oily voice. He was the only one not looking away in shame. The boy named Alby, looked him dead in the eye, taking a menacing step towards him and stared the boy down with such a fierce scowl, the sleezy boy looked away with a huff. Alby then looked each boy in the eye as he turned in a slow circle.

"No one touches the She-Bean! No one! You touch her and I will personally send you on a one way trip to spend the shuck night with the shuck Greavers! Good that?" He yelled.

Newt glaring at the boys behind Alby. While the boys grumbled in agreement, Newt had crouched down in front of the small girl curled on the ground. She had her head in her hands whimpering slightly. A frown of worry appeared on his face.

"I'm sorry about that. These shanks don't remember ever seein' a girl... not that it's right, what they did. It's sick, and ain't right in any way! Absolutely sick! They do that again and I'll shove 'em off The Cliff myself." He said, anger in his voice making his British accent thicker. He took a deep breath to calm himself.

"Okay, come on love, up ya get" he said gently, pulling her carefully and slowly to her feet again.

She was hit by another wave of dizziness. It was the first time she got a good look at where the cage took her. They were standing in a huge grassy courtyard. A dilapidated wood structure stood in one corner, a red barn with a fence and animals in another corner. What looked like a garden in another and a thick forest in the last corner. A few other little wood huts and a small cement structure stood out of the way, by one of the walls.

Surrounding all of this were walls. Huge solid stone walls that went hundreds of feet into the air. In parts of the wall there was thick green ivy growing onto the mossy stone. In the middle of each wall was an opening, as tall as the walls. She couldn't see anything past the openings, it was too dark. She spun around trying to take everything in and process it.

The boys started laughing and wolf whistling. She didn't hear it, she was too busy trying to comprehend what she was seeing. It made her even more dizzy, trying to see everything at once. Her breathing became shallow again, her chest was rising too fast, she was gasping for air. Her throat felt tight, her lungs were being squeezed, her head was pounding, the gash on her forehead didn't help. Her stomach was twisting. She was getting a sharp pain in her chest. She was absolutely terrified. She could see black spots, all the noise was just static, and her legs started shaking.

"Not again" she breathed, her legs gave out, and her vision went black.

Before everything faded to nothingness she heard a young boy's voice in the back of her mind.

"I'm here. I'm Here. I'm right here!" It sounded like he was screaming it at her, in her mind.
