Chapter 4__Condition Terminal

Tracy had severely hurt Lydia in a fight, and Kira had lost control of herself and had nearly killed her.

Tracy had half-Kanima, half-werewolf. She was killed by what Malia called 'the people in the masks'.

Scott, Liam and I walked into the hospital to meet up with the others.

"Tracy was buried?" Scott asked.

"In a hole," Liam answered. "Buried alive. Crawled out."

"Then we found another hole," I told him.

"Who was buried in that one?" Scott asked.

"I don't know, but I think we're gonna want to find out," I told them.

We stepped off of the elevator to join Stiles, Kira, Malia, Melissa and Theo.

Stiles looked at Melissa. "How bad is it?"

"Could have been worse," Melissa told us. "Theo, nice going on that tourniquet. You probably saved her life." She looked around all of us. "All right. She's about to go into surgery. So it's going to be a while. Any other supernatural details that I need to know about, or do we just stitch her up and hope for the best?"

"It was the tail," Kira told her.

"Yeah, Tracy cut her with the tail, if that makes a difference," Stiles told us.

"Okay," Melissa told us, walking away, leaving.

"But it wasn't just Tracy," Malia told us. "There were the others. The guys in the masks."

Scott, Deaton and I were talking in the clinic.

Deaton showed us a jar with the creature's talons. "A werewolf with the talons of an eagle. It's possibly a shapeshifter known in eastern mythology as a garuda." He set the jar down on the table, pulling another jar out of his bag with werewolf claws. "Tracy's claw. The unmistakable claws of a werewolf." He put the jar on the table, taking out another jar with Tracy's severed tail. "But a werewolf who also bears the venom and the scales of a Kanima."

"What do you even call that?" Scott asked.

"Personally, I call it terrifying," Deaton told us. "But at the moment, I'm more interested in how Tracy was able to get across the mountain ash."

"I thought nothing supernatural can do that," I told them.

"As did I," Deaton told us.

"So, if Tracy was able to cross the mountain ash, and no one supernatural can do that, Tracy's not a supernatural creature," Scott told us.

"Exactly," Deaton told us. "If she wasn't born and she wasn't bitten, she had to have been made."

"Made?" I repeated.

"Someone is trying to make supernatural creatures with non-supernatural means," Deaton told us. "And whoever they are, they're somehow managing to blur the lines between science and the supernatural."

"But there's more," I told him. "Liam and I found another hole out in the woods."

"Burying them could be part of their process, a kind of incubation," Deaton told us.

"What are we supposed to do?" Scott asked.

"Same thing you've always done," Deaton answered. "Protect your friends. Protect each other."

"So, what about someone like Tracy?" I asked.

"I wish I could tell you," Deaton told us. "Hopefully, I'll have more answers soon. I'll be gone a few days."

"You're leaving?" Scott asked.

"Just a few days," Deaton told us.

"How scared should we be?" I asked.

"I've lived in the world of the supernatural a long time," Deaton told us. "But I'm still a doctor. Still a man of science. Something like this happens, it rattles the foundation of everything you believe. Something like this shakes you to the core."

"Something like what?" Scott asked.

"The rules," Deaton answered. "The rules have changed."

The next day at school, Scott, Kira, Liam, and I were sitting in the school library.

Stiles and Malia walked closer.

"Did you get in to see Lydia?" Scott asked.

"No," Stiles answered. "I tried using my free period, but she's still in the ICU, and no one outside family is allowed in."

"We got one thing," Malia told us, putting the Bestiary on the table in front of us.

"Anything in here about half-werewolves, half-Kanimas?" I asked.

"The Chimera," Scott told us.

"Um, what?" Liam asked.

"Chimera," Scott answered. "It's a creature made of incongruous parts." He looked at Liam and me. "And if you said you found two burial sites, it means Tracy's not the only one."

"Who's the second Chimera?" Kira asked.

"Yeah, and why would they bury them?" Stiles added.

"Deaton thinks it's part of their process," I answered.

Malia gazed off. "The people in the masks."

After dark, Liam and I were walking toward a club called Sinema.

I was looking at my phone.

"Can you put your phone away for five minutes?" Liam asked. "Scott can howl if he needs you."

I put my phone away, sighing. "I just feel like I should be doing something."

"You are," Liam told me. "We both are. You once told me that we couldn't stop living our lives, and so that means I get to take you out on a date."

I smiled. "I was drunk from messed-up music at a bonfire where we nearly died when I told you that."

"So what?" Liam asked. "I'm supposed to meet Mason here because I'm his wingman tonight, and considering the state of his dating life, he needs a wingman, co-pilot and a really hot flight attendant."

"So I'm his hot flight attendant?" I asked.

Liam nodded. "Pretty much."

I sighed, smiling a small smile. "Fine. Let's go."

We walked toward the door.

A girl named Hayden from our school opened the big, heavy metal door for us. "Welcome to Sinema."

Liam handed her the ticket and money to get in.

We walked inside.

Strobe lights were flashing. Music was playing. Night of the Living Dead was playing by projector on the beads and chains hanging from the ceiling.

We saw Mason and Brett talking by the wall.

I smiled. "Yeah, I can get used to this."

Liam smiled.

  £

Liam and Mason were by the bar, getting drinks.

I was standing by the beads leading to the back, listening.

Mason was pointing out a guy. "Hey, uh, do you see that guy? He keeps looking over here. Do you know him?"

"Yeah," Liam answered. "I used to go to school with him at Devenford. That's Lucas."

Liam and I looked at each other from across the club.

I smiled, tilting my head teasingly.

Liam smiled.

A crowd walked by me.

I sensed something strange, looking toward the crowd in confusion, my eyes glowing gold.

Whatever was in here didn't feel right. It felt weird, off. Wrong.

  £

Liam and I were sitting off to the side, drinking.

I told him what I had felt earlier.

Liam shook his head. "No, I didn't catch anything. You really think someone else in here's like us?"

"I don't know, Liam," I told him. "Maybe. It's Beacon Hills. But it felt different."

"What do you mean?" Liam asked.

"It felt off," I answered. "It felt wrong."

Liam sighed, taking my drink from me, putting both of ours down. "We're supposed to be having fun. Okay, even Mason's hooking up. Come on."

Liam took my hands, leading me to the dance floor. We started to dance to the electronic music, his arm curling around me to place a hand on my back for us to dance closer. I turned my back to him, raising my arms in the air, leaning back against him as I danced. He kissed my neck. I closed my eyes, loving the feeling of being there with him and feeling free for the first time in a long time. I turned to face him, wrapping my arms around his neck as we continued to dance. We looked at each other for a long moment. I slowly drifted closer, a small smile playing over my lips. He leaned closer, kissing me slowly. We pulled away, looking into each other's eyes, smiling, kissing more deeply than before. He laid his hands on my waist and my back as we continued to dance, pressing us closer. I weaved my fingers through his hair. The more we kissed, the more passionate it became. We pulled away, smiling small smiles, wanting more.

We heard an alarm go off, and Brett growl from further in the club, looking toward the back of the club, running through the beads.

Brett and Lucas were fighting.

Lucas had scorpion stingers protruding from his arms, his eyes completely black. He slashed the stingers across Brett's stomach, ripping his clothing and skin, making him fall to the floor. He raised both arms to stab Brett with the stingers.

Liam ran closer, tackling Lucas to the floor. Lucas flipped Liam onto the floor, about to stab him in the head with the stingers. I grabbed him, pulling him off of Liam, pushing him away, making him stumble. Lucas turned to me. I stood ready, eyes glowing gold, glaring.

Kira and Scott ran back through the beads.

Liam stood. "You're a little late."

Kira took off her belt, snapping it out to make a sword.

I ran to a piece of scaffolding behind Lucas, grabbing one, spinning around to kick Lucas in the back, making him fall to the floor. Lucas stood. I jumped down from the scaffolding, slashing toward Lucas. Lucas ducked, rolling away, standing.

Lucas and Scott faced off. Lucas kicked him back, punching him in the face, pushing him into the scaffolding.

Kira spun her sword, slashing toward Lucas. Lucas raised his arm, using his scorpion stingers to block the move. Kira spun around, slashing toward Lucas.

  £

Kira slashed her sword toward Lucas repeatedly. Lucas raised both arms, using his scorpion stingers to block the moves.

Mason was kneeling next to Brett.

Brett was breathing heavily in pain. "What is that thing?"

Kira swung repeatedly toward Lucas. Lucas backed away enough to make her miss. Kira tried to impale Lucas. Lucas pivoted back on one foot to make her miss, grabbing Kira's wrist, trying to make her drop the sword. Kira pulled her wrist free, slashing toward Lucas. Lucas ducked, spinning around her, turning to face her. Kira turned to face Lucas, kicking him back into the chains behind him. Lucas pushed away from the chains, running toward Kira.

Scott stood in Lucas' way, lifting him off the floor, pushing him down.

Lucas' black eyes returned to normal.

Kira's eyes glowed a dark, dark gold. She was engulfed with Kitsune aura. She ran toward Lucas, spinning around, shouting in Japanese, slashing the sword toward Lucas, about to decapitate him.

Scott caught the sword before she did. "Kira!" Kira glared at Scott. She realized what she was doing, letting the aura and the glow in her eyes fade. Everyone was confused. Scott looked at the rest of us. "Is everyone okay?" We nodded. Kira ran a hand through her hair, overwhelmed. Lucas twitched. "We need to get him out of here. Natalie, Liam, give me a hand."

Scott, Liam and I took Lucas' body off the floor.

A retractable dart shot into Lucas' chest, into his heart, killing him, making us drop him to the floor. The dart was pulled out of him, back into its casing.

Everyone followed the movement toward the three guys in mask that Malia had told us about.

"Why did you do that?" I asked incredulously.

"His condition was terminal," one of them answered.

"What does that mean?" I asked. They turned to leave. I repeated forcefully, angrily. "What does that mean?"

The first one turned to look at us. "Failure."

Electricity flickered.

Lights shattered.

The guys in the masks phased in and out of focus, seeming to disappear altogether.

In the morgue, Scott, Melissa and I stood around Lucas' body.

Melissa sighed. "I'm sure they'll come up with a reasonable explanation for the stingers in his arms. I guess it's better than trying to explain a tail."

"Better than the truth?" I asked.

"Maybe," Melissa answered. "This is the best that we can do for now."

We put Lucas' body away, closing the door.

Scott sighed, shaking his head. "I--I--I should've know that this was going to happen. I should've been able to stop it."

Melissa walked closer. "You know, your grandfather used to have a saying about the word 'should'. You know what you're doing when you say 'should' too often? You're should-ing all over yourself." Scott and I managed small smiles. Melissa sighed. "I know that I can't be the Mom or the guardian that says, 'I don't want you to do anything about this'. 'Cause you're always going to be involved, because not only do you have the power to do something, you care enough to do it. So all you really need to ask yourselves, 'What are we going to do?'"

"We're going to find out who did this," I answered. "And we're going to stop them."

Scott nodded in agreement.

Melissa nodded, leading the way out of the room, leaving.

Scott and I exchanged a look, nodding, walking out, leaving.

We had stopped a lot of bad and evil in the town of Beacon Hills since we both got the bite and turned into werewolves.

So we knew that we could stop this, even if it took a while to do it.
