Twenty-Three
we're just going to pretend Nickel World has been around for a while bc google doesn't tell me when it was founded. anyways, here's the best Jean chapter i've written.
Jenny tossed her legs up onto the dining table, a pen cap between her lips as a concentrated frown was on her face. The pen in her hand was held firmly on the newspaper, and when a long enough silence had passed, she let out a frustrated noise, spitting the cap up and catching it.
"This is impossible!" She yelled, nearly startling Sam and Dean. Sam looked over at the newspaper, reading it.
"Fergie." Sam answered, Dean and Jenny slowly turning to him. He glanced between the two awkwardly, shifting in his chair. "Jess played her music a lot."
"Right..." Jenny gave Sam a suspicious glare before writing the name in the small boxes of the crossword puzzle, frowning again.
"I haven't found anything that could be a case for us since the motel thing." Dean complained, staring at his computer. "Man I am bored."
"Tell me about it. I've gone through 17 sudoku's in the last two days. And I beat my high score in Tetris twice." Jenny pointed to him with her pen, looking away in thought. "I need to beat it again."
As Jenny took out her phone, Sam's face turned to his 'i have a great idea' look, pulling his brother close to whisper something to him. Dean looked from his brother to Jenny, who was already too indulged in her game to listen.
After a moment, Dean cleared his throat. "Hey, Jen?" Jenny looked at Dean quickly before back to her game. "What do you say we go for a beer run? We don't have much food left either."
Jenny shut her phone off, shrugging. "Sure. I could use some air that's not mold infested." She smiled, grabbing her jacket as Sam smiled at the two.
"Hey, grab me a soda, will you?" Sam asked as they started heading out the door.
"You got it, Samurai."
———
Jenny watched as the little shops whipped past the Impala, looking at the people on the sidewalk with a small smile. She suddenly frowned, watching as the gas station passed by. "Hey, Dean, you missed the gas station."
"Hm? Oh, yeah, we're not going to the gas station." Jenny turned to Dean, confused at the smile he had on his face.
"What do you mean?" She asked, watching as Dean's smile grew larger. He turned to her for a moment and winked, looking back to the road. She glared at him, suspicion rising in her gut as she sank deeper into her seat, watching as Dean turned into a Nickel World.
Jenny's eyes immediately lit up with excitement, a giant smile plastering onto her face. "Holy shit I haven't been in one of these since I was a kid! Is this what you two were whispering about?!" Jenny yelled with enthusiasm as Dean held back a laugh, admiring the joy in her eyes for a moment.
"Yeah, Sam thought the two of us should have some time together. I mean, with everything that's been going on, we haven't really had any you and me time." Dean shrugged as Jenny shook his arm.
"This is great! I bet I'll kick your ass at ski-ball." She grinned, and Dean gave her a look that had said otherwise.
"You're on, shortcake." The two got out of the car quickly, Jenny rushing over to snag Dean's hand and drag him into the arcade, trying her hardest to hide the excitement coursing through her body.
"Hello! Welcome to Nickel World." A young teen smiled behind the counter, Jenny and Dean walking over.
"We just need a few coins for the game." Dean smiled at the young man, who nodded. Jenny quickly pulled out her credit card, handing it to the boy as he took out a handful of coins and gave it to her. Taking the card back, Jenny was quick to rush to the arcade floor.
"Okay, ski-ball, basketball, or knock down the clown?" Jenny pointed to the three of many other games that awaited them, ignoring the children that were running around wreaking havoc.
"Well I've never been the best at basketball—"
"Awesome, I'll kick your ass at that, too." Jenny joked, nudging Dean to the dual basketball game.
"Yeah, I'm sure you will." He grumbled, slipping a coin into the slot. The basketballs fell from the top, Dean and Jenny quick to grab one.
Jenny had lost to Dean by one shot, frowning in disappointment. "Damn. Good thing I didn't bet money on winning." She spoke, her smile returning again. "Round two? Or should we kill the clowns for Sam?"
Dean looked between the basketball game and Knock Down The Clown, gesturing to the ladder of the two. Jenny put in another coin to the basketball game, grinning as Dean did to his.
That time, she had beat him by three points, ignoring the fact he had definitely let her win. She shit her hands up in victory, laughing as she grabbed the tickets from the machine. "I'm definitely going to get that giant dragon at the counter."
Dean looked over to the bright purple dragon hanging from the ceiling where the young boy was standing, Jenny's eyes wide as she looked at it. A smile had crossed his face again, turning back to her. "Knock Down the Clown?" He asked, and she nodded, rushing over to the game.
Within less that a minute, Jenny had managed to knock down all of the clowns, watching as dozens of tickets rushed out of the machine. She snagged them quickly, her face now hurting from smiling so hard. "I remember Bobby taking me to one of these for the first time after I moved in with him." She started, her smile not faltering. "Probably one of the best memories I have with him."
"Really? This is the first time I've ever been in a Nickel World." Jenny's mouth dropped open in shock, but Dean shrugged it off. "With all the hunting and moving around, Sammy and I never had time."
"Wow you've missed out. Come on! You've had to of played Donkey Kong!"
———
The two had spent a good few hours in that arcade trying to beat one another of every game. Ultimately, Jenny ended up with the most tickets, dropping them on the counter in front of the boy with the widest grin her cheeks could handle.
After tossing the tickets into the precision counter, the boy turned to her. "You got 6,335 tickets." Jenny's eyes gleamed with excitement, turning to the dragon, which dimmed as she realized she didn't have a enough. She huffed in defeat, Dean putting his on the counter.
"We'll take the dragon." He smiled, looking to Jenny, whose joy had returned. The boy counted Dean's tickets, taking the dragon off the ceiling and handed it to Jenny, who wrapped her arms around it in a tight hug.
"You still have 4,362 tickets left." Dean looked around, pointed to a decently sized German Shepherd stuffed animal. "You guys have a good day."
Jenny waved goodbye to the boy as she walked out of Nickel World, still squishing the dragon. "This has been the best day of my life. Thank you, Dean." She smiled as Dean pulled her into a kiss.
"We still have the rest of the day." He said as they got into the car. Jenny crammed the dragon into the backseat, huffing as she shut the door to the passenger side.
"I saw a carnival sign..." Jenny said, slowly side eyeing Dean. "It's a little bit out of town. We don't have to go—"
"Are you kidding? Miss out on funnel cake and cotton candy? And pie?" He exasperated, starting up the Impala. Jenny quickly leaned over, giving Dean another long kiss before the two started driving out of town.
———
The couple were now sitting at a picnic table, Dean shoveling the pie into his mouth as Jenny tore off pieces of her cotton candy, looking up at the sky, which was starting to set to night. "I've never been to a carnival before." She started, looking around at the groups of people rushing past one another.
"This pie is amazing." Dean laughed, nearly choking on the pie as he did so. Jenny hummed in amusement, tying the cotton candy bag closed as Dean finished his pie. "So if you have been to a carnival, I bet you've never been on a ferris wheel, either?"
"Well I am scared of heights." She shrugged, then shook her head. "But today is not the day to be afraid of things." Jenny stood up quickly, Dean taking her free hand and interlocked their fingers, walking down the path towards the ferris wheel.
Jenny's eyes widened at how tall it was, unconsciously squeezing Dean's hand. "It's fine. It's not as bad as it looks." He reassured, kissing the top of Jenny's head. She nodded, her smile growing back on her face.
As the two neared the Ferris Wheel's gates, Jenny still had yet to notice the smile on Dean's face as he watched her. The excitement in her eyes that he hadn't seen in such a long time, as if it had never left. This was their first date, he reminded himself, hoping that Jenny would be this excited for the ones to come.
He kissed her temple, Jenny humming as he did so, looking up at him through her lashes. The two got onto their cabin, Jenny's free hand gripping the rim as it started to slowly spin up.
For a moment, it was scary to her. The people below seemed so small, all walking around with their new toys or food, laughing. Jenny couldn't help but laugh herself, letting out a relieved sigh as she looked up at the sky, which was now dark. Stars had danced around above their heads, a sliver of the moon high above.
Dean simply watched her again, ignoring the world around him to stare at the beauty that sat beside him. He wrapped an arm around her, and Jenny leaned in, holding his hand as she kept a thin lipped grin.
The two looked at one another, slowly leaning in for a long kiss as the ferris wheel stopped at the very top. And, as if it were on cue, someone lit up the fireworks as they pulled away.
"How's that for a chick flick moment?" Jenny joked, her eyes still locked on his lips. Dean laughed, looking away and shrugged.
"I can live with it." He commented, brushing a strand of hair from Jenny's face to kiss her again. Pulling away again, Jenny rested her head on his shoulder, the two looking ahead as the ferris wheel started descending.
After getting out of the cabin, the two started heading back to the parking lot, standing near the Impala. Dean turned Jenny to face him, looking down at her with that same gleam in his eyes.
"This was, the greatest first date I've ever been on." Jenny nodded as she smiled, tilting her head slightly to look in the backseat, where the dragon still stayed. "Thank you for taking me here, Dean."
"I'll take you anywhere you want, Jen." Dean promised, watching Jenny as her cheeks once again became sore with the smile. "I'd do anything to make you happy."
Jenny was quiet for a moment, taking in the scene around her. Her eyes were locked onto Dean's, slowly raising her hand to caress his cheek.
"Come on, there's one more place I want to show you." Jenny nodded, the two entering the car and leaving the carnival.
———
The two had been driving for a while, Jenny making sure to text Sam that they were fine and not to worry if they took too long. She didn't notice that Dean had started driving up a rocky road until she put her phone down, noticing they were surrounded by trees.
Jenny looked around as a clearing made its way towards them, a small patch of gravel large enough for one car to park. Ahead was almost an archway made from trees viewing the small town below from the hills, like it was in a valley.
"This is amazing." Jenny whispered to herself, stepping out of the car as Dean turned on the radio. He stepped out as well, walking over to Jenny as Don't Go Breaking My Heart started to play.
Jenny swayed back and forth to the music, looking down at all of the lights, pointing. "I can see the motel from here." She joked, turning to see Dean dancing his heart out. She let out a laugh, starting to dance towards him.
"Don't go breaking my heart." Dean sang, nearly shocking Jenny that he was actually singing and not doing an odd voice.
"I couldn't if I tried." She mused as Dean took her hands.
"Honey if I get restless."
"Baby you're not that kind." Jenny and Dean continued to dance around, singing their verses with laughter in their voice.
"Oh. Nobody knows it!" They sang together, Dean spinning Jenny around as she let out a small giggle.
After the song had ended, and both were out of breath, Jenny and Dean walked to the hood of the Impala, sitting on top. Jenny had most of her body on Dean, looking up at him as he caressed the top of her head. He looked down at her, an even bigger smile on his face.
The moment was soon ended by Sam texting Dean. Jenny sighed in disappointment. "And our night ends." She hummed, lifting herself off of Dean.
"Yeah, he wants his soda." Dean laughed along with Jenny, the two getting back into the Impala, content with the only peaceful day they'd probably ever have.
