Twenty-Four

Jenny and Dean had nearly slammed into the closed door, crossbow and gun ready as Dean frowned at Jenny's choice of weapon.

"A crossbow? Is that really necessary?" He asked as she huffed, breathing heavily.

"It's a silver arrow. Plus—" She raised the bow into the moonlight, showing that there were small grains of salt stuck to it. "Just it case. And it's cool."

Dean rolled his eyes as he swung the door open, the two entering with their weapons aimed, looking at the one man tied to a chair, others surrounding him.

"No, no no no no no!" Duane cried, panicking. "You're not gonna— I swear it's not in me!" Jenny held her hands steady at Duane, holding a blank stare.

"Oh God. We're all gonna die." Pam covered her mouth, backing away.

"Maybe they're tellin' the truth." Mark assumed, crossing his arms as he looked at Duane.

"He's not him, not anymore." Dean answered, him and Jenny advancing towards the group surrounding Duane.

"No, stop it! Stop it! Ask her, ask the doctor! It's not in me! I swear!" He cried, trying to get out of his restraints.

"I just . . . I can't tell." Dr Lee shook her head, looking to Jenny and Dean. Duane gasped in betrayal, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"No, please, don't. Don't. I swear, I—"

"We got no choice... Jen." Dean whispered as she stepped close to Duane, who was sobbing even harder.

"I swear, it's not in me, it's not in me! Don't, don't. Please!" He screamed, and Jenny shook her head.

"I'm sorry." She shot the arrow straight into Duane's heart, the young man's breath hitching before his head dropped.

———

Several hours before—

Jenny was shaking Sam as Dean entered the motel room, a panicked look on her face as she tried to snap the young Winchester out of his trance. She looked up at Dean from behind the bed, brows raising. "Dean! Help!"

"What's going on?! Sammy?" Dean rushed over to them, watching as Sam gasped for air. His eyes were rolled to the back of his head as if he were seizing, chest rising and falling quickly.

"No—!" Sam suddenly snapped out of it, nearly slamming his head into Dean's as he jolted up.

———

Later...

Jenny was sitting in the front seat with Dean, Sam in the back sitting in the middle. A GPS in Jenny's hand was telling Dean where to go as she was staring at it.

"Continue on O-R Two-Two-Four West." The GPS ordered, and Jenny frowned at it.

"Technology freaks me out." She mumbled, slumping in her seat. "I mean, there's a perfectly useable map in the trunk." Jenny suggested, eyeing the GPS suspiciously.

"That thing was Sam's idea." Dean pointed to the GPS, hating it as much as Jenny did.

"Guys that's not what we should be worried about right now." Sam interrupted, leaning on the back of the front seat. "There are only two towns in the US named Rivergrove."

"How come you're so sure it's the one in Oregon?" Dean asked, looking to his brother in the mirror. Sam stared off for a moment, thinking.

"There was a picture. Crater Lake." He answered, Jenny turning to face him.

"Okay, what else did you see?"

"I saw a dark room, some people, and a guy tied to a chair..."

"And Jen ventilated him?" Jenny looked to Dean, frowning. "That doesn't really sound like something she'd do without evidence."

"You two thought there was something inside him. She had a crossbow."

"Definitely not something I think I'd use. Are you sure it wasn't Dean that killed the guy?" Sam nodded slowly, and she turned away, thinking.

"Was he possessed?" Dean continued, and his brother shrugged, unsure. "Well, all your weirdo visions are always tied to the Yellow-Eyed Demon somehow... so was there any black smoke? Did we try to exorcise it?"

"No. Nothing, Jenny just plugged him, that's it."

"Well, I'm sure she had a good reason." Dean glanced over to Jenny, who was back to staring into an abyss, question her morals.

"I sure hope so." Sam mumbled, Jenny and Dean turning to him.

"What does that mean?" Dean snapped, silence following for a moment. "I mean, Jenny would never waste an innocent man. I know I wouldn't." Sam raised his brows, skeptical. "I wouldn't!"

"I never said you would!"

"Fine!" Dean yelled, Jenny frowning at the two.

"Fine! Look, we don't know what it is. But whatever it is, that guy in the chair's a part of it. So let's find him, and see what's what." Sam stated, the three quiet again.

———

Dean pulled up in front of a small wooden shop just inside Crater Lake. Jenny looked around for a moment before stepping out, an eerie feeling setting inside her gut. "I don't like this place." She mumbled just loud enough for Sam to hear, since Dean was on the other side.

"We'll be out of here sooner than you think." He reassured as the two caught up with the older Winchester, but Jenny shook her head.

They all walked into the shop, noticing a man behind a counter cleaning a rifle. Jenny checked the store out as Sam and Dean walked over to talk to the man. Occasionally, she glanced up whenever she grabbed something from a shelf.

Looking around for security cameras, Jenny quickly pocketed a box of bullets for her gun, walking over to the next shelf. The man didn't seem to notice, too busy talking to the Winchester brothers.

"And, who did you say she was?" Mark, the man cleaning the rifle asked, gesturing to Jenny.

"Lois Harper. She doesn't talk much. Now, this Duane guy, you know where he lives?" Dean asked, watching Jenny for a moment as she walked further into the shop, staring at a few knives. She fidgeting her arm holding the one under her sleeve, the metal warm against her skin from being tucked under for so long. She reminded herself to text Bobby soon, knowing what dangers probably lurked in this town from Sam's premonition.

"Lois. Let's go." Dean cleared his throat, Jenny quickly following them out of the shop.

Sam bumped into a telephone pole, Jenny chuckling before noticing the concerned look on Sam's face. "What? You get a splinter?"

"No. Look." Sam pointed at a word carved into the pole, Jenny and Dean looking at it. Her heart sank into her stomach, eyes widening.

"Croatoan." Jenny uttered, Dean looking at her blankly. Sam frowned at his brother, raising his arms up slightly.

"Roanoke? Lost colony? Ring a bell?" Dean paused, shaking his head. "Dean, did you pay any attention in history class?"

"Yeah! Shots heard 'round the world, How bills becomes laws..."

"That's Schoolhouse Rock." Jenny corrected him, and he scoffed.

"Whatever."

"Roanoke was one of the first English colonies in America, late 1500s?" Sam said, trying to trail Dean's mind to the right place.

"Oh yeah, yeah, I do remember that. The only thing they left behind was a single word carved in a tree. Croatoan." He remembered, a sudden odd look on his face.

"Wasn't the whole colony wiped out overnight?" Jenny asked Sam, who nodded.

"You don't think that's what's going on here, I mean..." Dean trailed off, looking around nervously.

"Whatever I saw in my head, it sure wasn't good. But what do you think could do that?" Sam questioned, Dean shrugging.

"Well, I mean, like I said, all of your weirdo visions are always tied to the Yellow-Eyed Demon somehow, so—"

"We should get help. Bobby, uh, Ellen maybe?" Sam gestured to Jenny, who quickly pulled out her phone, frowning.

"I don't have a signal." She looked at the brothers, who were quick to pull out their phones, shaking their heads.

"I don't either."

"Same here." Jenny looked around, rushing over to a pay phone and picked up the phone. She frowned as a female robotic voice kept repeating "Out of Service" to her. She pressed the dial several times, slamming it down.

"Line's dead." She said in defeat, Dean shook his head again.

"I'll tell you one thing. If I was gonna massacre a town, that'd be my first step."

"Dude." Jenny whacked his arm, and he gripped it quickly, shooting her a glare.

———

Dean parked the car outside of a cabin-like house in the middle of nowhere, the three stepping out and approaching the front door. By the door is a small, tacky plaque that reads "Born to fish; forced to work". Jenny chuckled at the plaque as Sam knocked on the door, and a teenaged boy with dark spiked hair opened it.

"Yeah?" He raised his brows as the Hunter's flashed their badges, stuffing them away. Jenny gave the boy an odd look as that unsettling feeling crept back into her gut. She tapped Dean's foot, his stance shifting slightly.

"We're looking for Duane Tanner; he lives here, right?" Dean asked in an intimidating tone, the boy nodding.

"Yeah, he's my brother."

"Can we talk to him?" Jenny asked, the boy looking at her nervously.

"Oh, he's not here right now." He answered, the three Hunter's frowning.

"Do you know where he is?"

"Yeah, he went on a fishing trip up by Roslyn Lake." The boy pointed away from the house, Sam peeking inside for a second.

"Your parents home?"

"Yeah, they're inside."

"Jake? Who is it?" A man's voice called from inside, Jake turning his back for a moment as Mr Tanner appeared.

"Hi, U.S. Marshals, sir, we're looking for your son Duane." Dean said as he flashed his badge again.

"Wh-why? He's not in trouble, is he?" Mr. Tanner stammered, looking at the three.

"No, no, no, no. We just need to ask him a couple of routine questions, that's all." Dean replied, Sam speaking up.

"When's he due back from his trip?"

"I'm not sure." He answered, shrugging.

"Well, maybe your wife knows?" Jenny assumed, looking to Sam and Dean as the feeling only became worse. "Can we talk to her?"

"No, I don't know, she's not here right now." The Hunters frowned in confusion, glancing to Jake for a moment.

"Your son said she was." Dean spoke suspiciously, looking to Mr. Tanner.

"Did I?" Jake laughed nervously, turning to his father.

"She's getting groceries. So, when Duane gets back, there's a number where he can get a hold of you?" Mr Tanner asked, and Dean shook his head.

"Oh no, we'll just check in with you later." He smiled, the three turning to walk back to the car. The door closed.

"That was kind of creepy, right? A little too Stepford?" Dean asked as Jenny nodded.

"Big time." Sam spoke, the woman turning back to look at the house.

"Something didn't feel right about them." She stated the obvious, the three starting to sneak around to the back of the house.

They crouched below a window, eyes widening as they saw a blonde woman, Mrs. Tanner, tied to a chair with a gag around her mouth.

The three watched as Mr Tanner sliced open Jake's arm without a moments thought, blood dripping onto Mrs Tanner's open wound.

Jenny quickly pulled out her gun from the belt loop behind her as Sam and Dean did, loading their guns as Jenny rushed to the back door.

She slammed her boot into the door, which then splintered open and the three rushed in. Jenny and Dean shot at Mr Tanner in the chest, watching him fall down as Jake jumped out a window. Sam ran towards it, going to shoot Jake but seemed to have hesitated, letting him run to the woods.

"Mrs. Tanner? Are you okay?" Jenny rushed over to the woman as she tucked her gun away, untying her.

"Jake's blood is in her system. We need to take her to the hospital." Sam said in a rushed tone, helping Jenny lift the woman up from the chair.

———

"We need a doctor!" Jenny yelled as she threw the hospital doors open, almost struggling to carry Mrs Tanner inside.

A middle aged woman, Doctor Lee, rushed over, Sam pausing for a moment as if he recognized her. Dean was helping Sam drag Mr Tanner in.

"Mrs. Tanner, what happened?" Dr Lee asked with heavy worry, Jenny lifting her up slightly.

"She's been attacked. Different blood got in her system." Jenny reiterated, Mrs Tanner lifting her head up slightly.

"Doctor Lee?"

"Bring her in." Jenny rushed over to the doctor, who helped her out Mrs Tanner on a bed as Sam and Dean appeared. "Is that—"

"Mr. Tanner?" Dean grunted, trying to avoid getting any blood on him.

"Was he attacked too?" Lee asked Jenny, who squinted.

"Uh... no, actually, he did the attacking and then he got himself shot." Dean answered, the doctors eyes widening.

"Shot?" She repeated, and Jenny modded again. "And who are you?"

"U.S. Marshal. I'd show you my badge, but uh..." Dean and Sam gestured to Mr Tanner, and Dr Lee nodded.

"Oh. Sorry. Bring him back here."
