Twenty-Five

Jenny, Sam and Dean all stood outside of Dr Lee's lab, who was inside treating Beverly Tanner's wound.

Jenny paced back and forth for a moment before pressing her ear against the door, listening in. She waved Sam and Dean over as Beverly started to explain to Doctor Lee what had happened before they arrived.

"No, of course not. I don't know why. One minute they were my husband and my son. And the next, they had the devil in them." Beverly sounded close to tears as Jenny gave Sam and Dean a half-knowing glance. She would mouth something, but Dean had already beat her to it.

"We gotta talk." Dean took Sam and Jenny away from the lab door. "Those guys were whacked out of their gourds."

"We all heard Beverly. This had to be demon possession. And if it is— Dean, we just killed a guy that didn't have control over himself." Jenny gave Dean a regretful look, but he shook his head.

"That wasn't a demon." He reassured, turning to his brother.

"Mass possession?" Sam suggested, Jenny crossed her arms in thought.

"If it is a possession there could be more. I mean, God knows how many, it could be like a fuckin' Shriner convention." Dean turned away for a moment, trying to assess the possible dangers that they could be facing.

"Oh boy." Jenny mumbled, running a hand through her hair. She cleared her throat nervously, turning back to them.

"Of course, that's one way to wipe out a town, you take it from the inside." Dean spoke, but Sam shook his head.

"I don't know, man. We didn't see any of the demon smoke with Mr. Tanner, or any of the other usual signs of demon possession." Sam frowned, Jenny shrugging.

"Well, whatever. Something turned him into a monster. And you know if you woulda taken out the other one there'd be one less to worry about." Dean pointed accusingly at his brother, Jenny glancing to Sam.

"I'm sorry, all right? I hesitated, Dean, it was a kid!" Sam argued, his brother raising his voice slightly more.

"No, it was an "it". Not the best time for a bleeding heart, Sam." Jenny stayed quiet, turning back as Dr Lee opened the door to her lab, stepping out.

"How's Mrs Tanner?" Jenny asked, Dr Lee flailing her arms up.

"Terrible! What the hell happened out there?" She looked between the three, awaiting an answer, but they all shrugged.

"We... don't know." Dean spoke his half-truth, looking between Sam and Jenny.

"Yeah? Well, you just killed my next door neighbor." Jenny sucked in a quiet breath, shrugging.

"We didn't really have a choice. He was going to kill his wife." She responded, holding a calm face.

"Maybe so, but we need the county Sheriff. I need the coroner—"

"Phones are down." Sam interrupted, and Dr Lee rolled her eyes, nodding.

"I know, I tried. Tell me you have a police radio in the car?" She asked, Jenny shook her head

"Yeah we do. But it crapped out just like everything else." Sam responded again, the doctor groaned in irritation.

"I don't understand what is happening." She mumbled, turning away for a moment.

"How far is it to the next town?" Dean asked. Dr Lee turned, thinking.

"It's about forty miles down to Sidewinder."

"All right, I'm gonna go down there, see if I can find some help." Dean clapped Sam and Jenny on the shoulders, the two turning to him. "My partners will stick around, keep you guys safe." Jenny looked to Dean as if he was crazy, silently wishing that they were a quartet instead of a trio in this moment.

"Safe from what?" Silence.

"We'll get back to you on that."

———

"Dean are you trapped in a looney bin? We don't know what's going on outside or inside this town. Separating doesn't sound like a good plan." Dean stopped walking and turned to Jenny and Sam, both who had a worried expression on their faces.

"Jenny is right, Dean. We don't know what's going on. And with the phones down, we'll have no way of contacting each other if something happens." Jenny gestured to the taller of the three, eyes wide.

"I'll be fine. You guys will be fine. I can protect myself, you guys can do the same. Just don't get dead, alright?" Dean rushed to give Nenny a kiss before walking out of the hospital, Jenny still frowning.

"I hate when he does this." She grumbled, turning back to Dr Lee's lab.

———

Jenny stared down at Mr Tanner's body, a sickening feeling in her stomach that she couldn't tell if it was from him being a monster, or a feeling of immense regret. She turned away when Sam gave her a worried glance, looking to Dr Lee.

She hummed in confusion. Jenny frowned. "What is it?"

"His lymphocyte percentage is pretty high. His body was fighting off a viral infection." Jenny walked over as Dr Lee moved away from the microscope, the woman looking inside of it.

"What kind of virus?" Sam asked as Jenny moved away from the microscope with wide eyes. Dr Lee shrugged. "Do you think an infection could have made him act like that?"

"None that I've ever heard of. I mean, some can cause dementia, but not that kind of violence. And besides, I've never heard of one that did this to the blood." Dr Lee explained as Jenny rushed over to Sam.

"What is it?" He asked, worried.

"There's sulfur in the blood."

———

"I don't understand. Are you saying my husband and Jake had a disease?" Beverly asked, huddled in a heap on her hospital bed.

"That's what we're trying to find out. Now, during the attack, do you remember . . . did you have any direct contact with their blood?" Dr Lee asked, and Jenny nodded quickly.

"I already told you. Her son put his blood in her wound." Jenny answered, and Beverly's eyes widened in fear.

"Oh my God. You don't think I've got this virus, do you?" She cried, Dr Lee standing up as she shot Jenny a glare.

"Beverly, I don't know what to think. But with your permission, we'll take a blood sample." Beverly paused, slowly nodding as Jenny stared at Beverly, watching her moves.

The woman outstretched her hand for Dr Lee. As she went to take her arm, Beverly grabbed the doctors wrist and bent it back, yelling in pure rage, lashing out with her free hand. Jenny shot up quickly, Sam pulling out his gun. Beverly threw Sam across the room with a surprising amount of strength, Jenny jumping on top of the woman.

Beverly managed to free one of her hands and grab a scalpel, slicing Jenny's arm. She yelled in pain, attempting to pin her arm back down but Beverly was quick, digging her fingers into her own shoulder and smearing her blood into Jenny's. Her eyes widened in fear as Sam got up, grabbing a fire extinguisher and slammed it into the older woman's head, knocking her out.

"Jenny! Are you okay?" Jenny grabbed a clean gauze pad, quickly wrapping her arm up and she nodded.

"No. I don't think I will be."

———

After Dr Lee had treated Jenny's wound, she was forced to stay isolated from everyone else. Despite not showing any signs yet of infection, they still had to be cautious. It had only been half an hour.

Jenny looked at Sam through the window, giving him a half hearted smile. "You okay?" He mouthed, and she nodded slowly, looking around the bright room filled with medical equipment.

Suddenly, there was a loud banging on the door outside her room, Dean appearing with a man. He looked around quickly, spitting Jenny in the isolated room. He looked scared for a moment, running towards the door before Sam grabbed him.

She frowned at them, unaware of what the two were saying as Sam was whispering, but Dean just looked even more worried the more Sam kept talking.

Dean looked to Jenny, starting to notice that either the room was very white, or she was growing pale. Probably the very white room.

"She's been infected? Well we gotta—" The man Jenny didn't know pulled out his gun, her eyes widening as she scrambled to get off the bed.

Dean immediately took his gun and slammed it into his nose, pointing it at the stranger. "What are you doing?! We can't let this thing take over she'll kill us all!"

"I'll kill you before she even gets the chance if you so much as think about shooting her." Dean threatened, cocking the gun with a hateful scowl.

Even while she knew the blood had been in her system for less than an hour, she still felt fine. The sickening feeling was probably from Beverly still being in close range of her.

"Sam, watch him." Dean ordered as he walked out of the room, most likely going to kill Beverly. Jenny approached the window, looking at Sam helplessly.

"You need to find a cure, Sam. We can't keep killing people." She demanded, itching at her bandaged arm. She looked down at it, praying that she hadn't been infected.

"Jenny, something's different about this. In my vision— you didn't even look like you'd been infected." Sam's voice echoed from outside, watching as she paced.

"Well, something's change, you know? I mean, maybe I had gone with Dean to the bridge in your premonition instead of staying with you. Since I stayed... Well. The future does change." She turned away, trying to hide the pain in her expression. She was truly scared, not wanting to feel the infection growing.

"Jenny?" Sam spoke, and she shook her head, taking in a sharp breath.

"I'm okay. There's still a few hours before we know for sure, right? I can... Wait it out." Jenny slowly sat back down onto the bed, gripping it tightly, feeling her heart start to race.

Sam looked at her with worry, unsure if she was panicking, or trying to fight off the infection. "Jennifer—"

"I can't do this! I can't stay in here. Sam, it feels like— like the walls are pressing me flat! I can't—" Jenny gasped, trying to breath. Sam rushed to open the door, the man he had been holding a gun up to, grabbing him.

"You can't do that, man! She's messing with you. It's the infection!" He yelled, but Sam still looked at Jenny with fear as tears trickled down her face.

"There's only one way to make sure she'll be at peace." The man said, attempting to take his gun. Dean rushed back in, pulling the man away from Sam, who swung the door open and ran to Jenny.

"Jenny? Jennifer are you okay?" Jenny was still hyperventilating. She grabbed onto Sam, staring him down.

"Please, let me out of here." She begged, Sam looking at her, unsure. "Sam. Please."

He pulled away, Jenny shaking her head. "No— Sam no don't leave me in here. Sam you can't do this!" She ran to the door as Sam locked it, pounding on it. "Let me out! Dean! Dean please you have to let me help!" She trembled, sliding down the door as she weakened her throws at it. Curling herself into a ball, Jenny hid away in a corner, fighting everything in her to act out with anger so they wouldn't think she was actually infected.

———

"Come on man, look at her! She's pale and looks ready to break the glass down!" Duane, the man that Jenny had killed in Sam's vision, exclaimed to Dean. Mark, the man that had been attempted to kill Jenny since the beginning, nodded in agreement.

"No one is shooting her!" Dean yelled, pointing to everyone. The only person missing was Pam, after her attempt to infect Sam failed. Duane limped over to the window, Jenny's eyes fixated on the floor. Red and puffy, her nose a light shade of pink from crying.

"She's infected and we all know it. You tried killing me. I say we kill someone that actually got the virus." Jenny flinched as Dean slammed Duane into the window, silently threatening him.

"I need to check her blood." Dr Lee spoke, Dean turning to her.

"Do it. Now." Dr Lee hesitated to open the door, shutting it and slowly walked in as everyone watched. Jenny remained still, not even blinking.

As Dr Lee began to lift her sleeve up, Jenny slowly turned to Dr Lee, eyes downturned with sorrow. "I'm sorry I'm scaring everyone." She whispered, hair covering most of her face.

Dr Lee paused for a moment, looking to the woman. "It's been two hours. You haven't shown any signs despite getting Beverly's blood in your system. I'm sure you'll be okay." Jenny hummed in pain as Dr Lee shoved a needle into her arm, drawing a vial of blood.

"Do you have my gun?" Jenny whispered, and Dr Lee paused, looking at her. Hesitating, she nodded. Jenny outstretched her other hand, a pleasing look in her eyes. "Please."

"I can't. Those two men you showed up with— They'd kill me for giving it to you." Jenny grabbed. her arm lightly, everyone in the other room tending up as they watched.

"Please, Dr Lee. I can't let everyone worry anymore." Dr Lee took the needle out and shook her head, backing out.

"I can't let my patient kill herself." She locked the door, Jenny letting a single tear slip as she stared straight ahead again.

"She didn't even try to infect Dr Lee she's fine!" Sam argued as everyone started backing away from the window.

"And it has been two hours. The virus will start to show soon. Let's just kill her now—" Mark took out his gun, Jenny unmoving. Dean stepped in front of the door quickly, a threatening look behind his eyes.

"I'm gonna say this one last time — you make a move on her, you'll be dead before you hit the ground. You understand me? I mean, do I make myself clear?!" Dean yelled, Mark backing away.

"Then what are we supposed to do?!" He asked, Dean picking through his pocket. Jenny looked up in time to see the keys to the Impala fly through the air and into Mark's hand.

"Get the hell out of here, that's what. Take my car. You've got the explosives, there's an arsenal in there. You two go with him. You've got enough firepower to handle anything now." Dean demanded as Jenny stood up.

"What about you two?" Mark asked Sam and Dean, who both turned to Jenny.

"Guys, please. Go with them. The virus will show up any second. You have to go."

"There's no way in hell we're leaving you here to rot, Jen." Dean spoke, turning back to Mark.

"No, she's right. Come with us." He ordered, but Sam and Dean stayed put. Mark and Duane started to back away, nodding. "Okay, it's your funeral."

Dr Lee joined Mark and Duane, Jenny shaking her head in disappointment. Dean opened the door, letting her step out. "Guys, please. Just go."

"And like I said, not happening." Dean glared at Jenny, who turned away.

"If on of you don't put a bullet in my brain right now then I'll just find another way—"

"Jen, enough! We aren't killing you, you're not killing yourself." Dean yelled, Jenny stepping back. She turned around resting her head on the glass and let out a laugh.

"This is the dumbest thing you guys could have done." She mumbled, turning to face them.

"Not as dumb as the thing we did in Tampa." Jenny retched at the memory, trying to hold back a small laugh. She sniffled, wiping a tear away.

"Guys, I'm sick. You know it's over for me. I mean, look at me. In the last two hours I basically lost all coloring in my face." Jenny turned to face the mirror, looking at her pale face and dark eyes. "It's like I'm becoming a zombie. It's over for me. But you guys could keep going."

"Who says I want to?" Dean answered quietly, Sam and Jenny looking to him. "I'm tired, Sam. I'm tired of this job, this life . . . this weight on my shoulders, man. I'm tired of it."

"So what, so you're just going to give up? You're just gonna lay down and die? Look, Dean, I know this stuff with Dad has—"

"You're wrong. It's not about Dad. I mean, part of it is, sure, but ..." Dean trailed off after interrupting his brother, shaking his head.

"What is it about?" A noise outside silenced the three, Dr Lee rushing into the room, ignoring that Jenny was outside of her containment.

"You'd better come see this."

———

Jenny sat on an exam table, still looking sickly but felt normal. Dr Lee pulled away from the microscope, shaking her head. "There are no indications the virus is in her system. No sulfur, either."

"What? How? Beverly's blood got in me." Jenny looked to Sam and Dean, confused.

Dr Lee shrugged. "I don't know... you're just not. I mean, you compare it with the Tanner samples—" Dr Lee looked through another microscope, pulling away in confusion. "What the hell?"

"What?" Sam asked, the doctor shaking her head.

"Their blood. There's no trace of the virus. No sulfur, nothing."

———

The three hunters, including Lee, Duane and Mark, were all outside now. Mark and Duane were setting up a truck, getting ready to ditch the town. Dr Lee walked over to the Hunters, who were leaned against the Impala.

"What about Duane?" Jenny asked, watching the young blonde pack a case into the back of the truck.

"He's going to be fine. No signs of infection." Dr Lee then turned and walked back into the lab as Duane and Mark drove off. Dean and Jenny turned to Sam

"Hey, don't look at me. I got no clue."

"I swear, I'm gonna lose sleep over this one. I mean, why here, why now? And where the hell did everybody go? It's like they just fuckin' melted." Dean frowned, looking around as Jenny shrugged.

"Why was I immune? If anything, I would have guessed it be Samurai." Dean and Sam shrugged.

"Yeah. You know what? That's a good question. You know, I'm already starting to feel like this is the one that got away?" They all hit into the car, Sam aggressively shoving the stuffed dragon on one side, huffing.

"Can we please move this thing to the trunk?"

Dean and Jenny both turned to Sam at the same time. "No."

"Jerks." He grumbled, the couple smiling up front.

"Bitch."
